Soul (2020)
Pretty Good
I Liked this but it's not their best effort, not even close. A lot of feel good moments throughout but at times it felt like it really dragged on and felt like it was running a little long. I can see why people have fallen in love with this film but something about it didn't quite click with me.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Visually stunning but lacking everywhere else
Based on visuals alone this movie is easy a 10/10. It's easy to get lost in the creativity and the stunning nature of the CGI but unfortunately the rest of the movie was poor.
I usually like watching Dale Dehaan but he felt very out of place in this sort of role and I don't think being the lead male in this genre is suited to him. Cara Delevingne comes across as awkward and her verbiage sound very monotone and unnatural. Ethan Hawke, who is a great actor was wasted in such a miniscule role and what was the point in the pirate captain, voiced by John Goodman, issuing serious threats towards the main character to never follow up on those threats?
A lot of potential to be a good movie but the ball was well and truly dropped here.....disappointing
Hubie Halloween (2020)
A lot of unjust negativity
I just don't understand the amount of hate and negativity towards this movie. It's a silly Adam Sandler comedy that follows a very specific formula that we've all come to know during Sandler's career but at least Hubie Halloween actually has a nice message about bullying woven into the story. Sandler doesn't always get it right with his movies as Jack and Jill and That's My Boy really standout as awful pieces of work and this was nowhere near that level of terrible as some are suggesting. It's a lighthearted movie that provides you with an escape where you don't have to focus too much to follow the story and the comedy is basic but effective.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Great Fun
Enola Holmes is a fun movie from beginning to end. There were elements of drama and comedy sprinkled throughout and a rather stacked cast was headed by the magnificent Millie Bobby Brown. This movie only highlights that she is going to be a megastar within the film and television industry for decades to come. The only real cirticism I have is that the ending was rather abrupt. The storytelling was very intricate and layered throughout and everything just kind of came to an abrupt finale which seemed out of sorts with the rest of the film. Initially I was thinking they were setting up for a sequel and I wouldn't have been mad about that if they had but instead everything just concluded. Would highly recommend!!
#cats_the_mewvie (2020)
Social media is the downfall of people
This feature length documentary really highlights everything wrong with social media as a platform to "influence" and the people who use it to try and become rich and famous for having no actual talent. This is essentially a bunch of individuals who try and exploit social media to try and become famous from posting mostly staged pictures of their cat online. Nothing about what's going on here is natural and the people are truly awful. There were some pretty cool clips of cats being cats but 99% of this was infuriating garbage. Out of all of the awful people on display the one lady who has the overweight cat was by far the worst as what she's doing is pretty much animal cruelty just so she can try and become a social media influencer and make some serious coins from taking advantage of her pet.
Aladdin (2019)
Will Smith to the rescue
I was quite generous with the 6 rating but that's mainly due to my fondness of the original animated version and the memories that this movie triggered. A lot was wrong with this film as both Aladdin and Jasmine didn't have the ability to emit any kind of emotional connection with the audience, very wooden and poorly acted characters by both actors involved. However, Will Smith as the Genie was quite brilliant and provided nearly all of this movies highlights. Without the Genie this movie would probably score about a 3/10 but Will Smith's performance was so charasmatic and funny that he really rescued this movie from failure. Also, i didn't see the point in Jasmine's 2 songs that weren't part of the orginal. They were both riddled with autotune and didn't fit into the rest of the movie as they tried to sound like some kind of power ballad rather than an easy to listen to DIsney tune.
The 33 (2015)
Bravery and courage
The 33 is a good solid movie that displays deep level of emotion, bravery, and courage while faced with a desperate situation. I remember watching this story unfold on the news and it was gripping as just when all hope was seemingly lost, the miraculous happened. Antonio Banderas shines as a leader and somebody who helps others who reach breaking point and one of my main gripes is I would've preferred if The 33 was filmed in Spanish rather than English to give the movie a bit more of an authentic feel to it. Overall though it was a really good movie to watch and although quite long at just over 2 hours, it didn't feel like it.
Three Amigos! (1986)
Steve Martin shines bright but Martin Short dimly flickers
The three main stars here; Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short all perform at different levels and it's this inconsistency that drags the overall quality of the movie down a mark or two. Steve Martin is brilliant, Chevy Chase is simply ok but Martin Short is really poor and most of his comedic lines really fall flat. Steve Martin is one of those performers that even with the slightest change of facial expression can make you laugh and the majority of the laughs thorughout Three Amigos cam from him. Today's comedy is more about vulgarity , which I personally don't mind either, but I will always be impressed with the comedy giants of yesteryear such as Steve Martin and Chevy Chase who can make the audience belly laugh without the heavy reliance on strong language and obscenities. The story here is quite predictable but what was I to expect from a silly eighties comedy and while some of the comedy is really smart and witty, unfortunately some elements of the comedy haven't aged well and don't transfer into the 21st century all that well.
Fences (2016)
Denzel & Viola take a bow
The overall quality of the movie rests heavily on the shoulders of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Both were exceptional to watch as on screen husband and wife and in the dialogue driven movie about resentment, anger, pain, love, forgiveness and an old fashioned way of thinking they both shine brightly. The story is powerful and the long speeches are effective at setting the overall atmosphere. Denzel performs double duty here too as he stars and directs and coming away from this film I realise that he should definitely direct more frequently. My only real critique of this film is that it does somewhat drag at times and could do with being 20 minutes or so shorter.
Christopher Robin (2018)
Heart warming and delightful
A wonderful movie that fills you with so much joy and warmth that you can't help but smile while watching the playfulness of Pooh and company. So many feel good moments are delivered here and Ewen McGregor delivers a stellar performance as Christopher Robin. The cinematography was excellent and plaudits Ho to Brad Garrett who has the perfect voice to play Eeyor, a genius piece of casting.
Sweet Virginia (2017)
Deceived by Netflix
Where to begin? The blurb on Netflix made Sweet Virginia sound quite appealing but I suppose that's the purpose, a little snippet designed to lure you in. Jon Bernthal, who is usually very good, was hard to understand as most of his lines sounded like incoherent nonsense, subtitles to the rescue. Christopher Abbott was the only redeemable quality this movie had to offer as he performed head and shoulders above his co workers. The story was weak, dialogue boring and parts of the film made no sense. Netflix owes me 93 minutes of life back.
The Running Man (1987)
Disappointing
I usually love most things Schwarzenegger, especially his 80's and early 90's stuff but this was just so poor compared to pretty much everything else he had featured in around that time. The story was lame, the action was poor, the characters weren't developed and even Arnold's killer one liners failed to hit the mark. I suppose not everything Arnie touched could be a home run.
T2 Trainspotting (2017)
A must see sequel
While Trainspotting didn't necessarily need a sequel it was still a treat when this was released although expectations were extremely high and while T2 doesn't quite reach the standard of the first movie it doesn't fall too short either. I loved the first movie and it was exciting to see all the characters back on the big screen and it really felt like each actor hadn't missed a beat with each of their respective characters, especially Robert Carlyle who is incredible as Begbie. I'm glad Spud received a bit more of a focus in this movie as I really do Ewen Bremner and everything he brings to these movies. I felt T2 delivered more on the comedy side of things as there was some well scripted dialogue that kept you chuckling but the first Trainspotting was a lot darker and grittier and quite a bit of that wasn't transferred to the sequel, a great watch nevertheless.
Mile 22 (2018)
Packed full of action
Mile 22 boasts a solid cast which come together and perform very well. The story was mediocre but did manage to improve as it threw a curve ball at the end, which I personally didn't see coming. The highlight and standout from this movie was the action, it was jam packed full of top quality action sequences and the choreography of the fighting scenes was tremendous. Iko Uwais, most famous for his leading role in The Raid, is a tremendous asset to this movie as he delivers superb action and his character always has this strange mystique surrounding him . Mark Wahlberg was intense and a little full on, which I liked, but can see why people disliked his performance and while this movie isn't going to set the world alight, its a fun way to spend 90 minutes watching an action packed film which is designed to just entertain.
Dark Tourist (2018)
In desperate need of a new presenter
The show itself is pretty cool as you get to see some outrageous things that don't make it into the holiday brochures. In some episodes you get to learn about different cultures and explore them in a way that you didn't think was possible and in other episodes you see how people have made businesses by being very opportunistic by thinking outside of the box. Unfortunately the host, David Farrier, sucks some of the enjoyment out of this series. He travels all round the world experiencing things that the vast majority could only dream of experiencing but anytime he's challenged or finds anything remotely difficult he gets offended and becomes quite abrupt with his hosts. He should be the poster boy for the overly sensitive and easily offended and while many people will relate and sympathise with him, I just found him to be an irritating child for large portions of the show. He's a poor man's Louis Theroux and should step aside to let somebody who's willing be open minded take over should Dark Tourist get a second season.
Aquaman (2018)
Mediocre Man
I like Jason Momoa, he's very entertaining and one of those actors who is very easy to watch. He gets an A for effort as he tries to pull DC out of its slump but Aquaman was way too heavily reliant on CGI and there was no true emotion embedded into the story. Most characters were wooden and poorly executed which was unfortunate as I was really hopeful that Aquaman would go against the grain and be a good DC movie. Some of the comedy was pretty decent but other moments were very ill-timed and came across as trying too hard but there are definitely signs that DC movies as a whole are improving. On to the next one...
The Lion King (2019)
Not as bad as the reviews suggest
As Disney continue to create live action versions of their classic animated movies it was inevitable that they were going to eventually get round to creating The Lion King, arguably one of the most popular and most critically acclaimed Disney animations to date. Due to it's popularity I felt this was destined to be hated from the off as people just don't want new versions of their old favourites, I felt like the film was always going to struggle to win over the masses and that appears to be so having scrolled through the reviews and being met by a barrage of 1/10's. For me I enjoyed my time watching The Lion King as it was visually superb and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa just gave me constant laughs, he was perfect for the role. I would've like to have seen a few more characters re cast such as Jeremy Irons as Scar and Rowan Atkinson as Zazu just to add that little extra dose of nostalgia which I felt was lacking despite having James Earl Jones reprise his role as Mufasa. My main critique with this version of The Lion King was the casting of Beyoncé as Nala, I seriously hated the sound of her voice throughout as it just didn't seem suited to the movie and I felt Nala was given a bigger platform in this film because she was being voiced by Beyoncé, trying to justify her casting and the vast fortunes she was probably paid for lending her voice to the project. With that put to one side I enjoyed the movie, the songs for the most part were good to listen to and although I would've liked a bit more nostalgia and a little less Beyoncé I came out of the cinema feeling satisfied.
Office Uprising (2018)
Funny & Gruesome, what more can you ask for
For a low budget zombie flick this surprised the hell out of me. I've seen my fair share of of these types of movies and the majority of them tend to be pretty tame and rather boring. However, Office Uprising has a fine balance of comedy mixed with gore and a little bit of the outrageous mixed in to make sure it has something for everyone. Fine performances from the majority of the cast with Brenton Thwaites, Karan Soni and Zachary Levi taking most of the plaudits. If you're looking for an outrageous little movie that just flies by then look no further than Office Uprising, it won't win any awards for being the best movie but it's very entertaining.
Octane (2003)
NOPE, NOPE and NOPE
Norman Reedus was what drew me to this movie and his character seemed pointless and lacked any real purpose. I loved him in The Boondock Saints and really wanted him to shine and thirve but he was never really given anything to work with and his character had no real relevance to the plot, he was just kind of there for the sake of being there. Lead character played by Madeline Stowe was shockingly bad as she showed zero talent and acting prowess. Mischa Barton who played Stowe's daughter was equally as bad and the whole thing was just a mess from start to finish. Jonathan Rhys Meyers who was introduced towards the end of the movie was unfortunate really as his performance could've been phenomenal (although highly unlikely, given what I had watched prior to his introduction) but by the time he was introduced my brain had just switched off and i didn't really care about anything the movie was trying to offer me as I just wanted it to end. A nap would've been a more productive way to spend 90 minutes.
The Banger Sisters (2002)
Susan Sarandon let's the team down
The plot is quite generic and very routine with nothing exciting or out of the ordinary taking place except a poor performance from the usually brilliant Susan Sarandon. Geoffrey Rush was great, Goldie Hawn was pretty ok but the ever reliable Sarandon didn't meet the high expectations I have for her. In most scenes she looked uncomfortable and out of sorts and the 'wild side' that her character shows looks incredibly unnatural whereas Goldie Hawn is very beleivable in her role. The movie overall was pretty average, didn't completely waste my time but didn't exactly provide stellar entertainment either.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
A rare case where a sequel is on par with the first installment
Movies such as Jack Reacher should really be a one hit wonder as there typically is no need for a sequel and when movie studios force a sequel out based on the success of the first movie it tends to add pretty badly. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back however is one of only a very select few movies where the sequel matches the quality of its predecessor as Tom Cruise returns to the big screen in a positive way. While some of the story and action scenes were a little cliche and predictable it's to be expected and every so often in the movie the action went from cliche to tremendous. I've never been much of a Tom Cruise fan but he's slowly starting to grow on me and this is just another thumbs up from me for him. While this has been a successful sequel I hope a third isn't in the pipeline as I think that's where the series and character will unravel and get tainted. Quit while you're ahead, please.
Le petit prince (2015)
Good family movie
An easy to watch family film that features some really captivating animation. The story is one of hope and friendship and the first hour of the movie was really enjoyable to watch. I felt the conclusion was a little lack lustre in comparison to how it started but any movie which features Jeff Bridges is ually a win for me and he really gave the Aviator a heart and soul as he tranformed into character to care for.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Superb!!!!!
As close to perfection as a movie can be. This movie had it all, it was entertaining, moving, thilling, enojoyable and was brilliantly casted from top to bottom. Rami Malek was outstanding and fully deserving of the Academy Award he won for this portrayal of Freddie Mercury. I'm not old enough to have lived through the rise of Queen but this movie gave me an insight into just how truly special and once in a lifetime this band were. The end sequence of Live Aid did seem a very easy way to fill 20 minutes of screen time but it was captured perfectly and just allowed me to immerse myself into the music and appreciate the showmanship of arguably the best performer in music history.
Nine to Five (1980)
Surprisingly good
I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed 9 to 5 as i really didn't expect much out of it. My wife and I have been listening to a lot of Dolly Parton's music in the car, something about it is just very relaxing and easy to listen to and when the chance came to watch 9 to 5 we decided to give it a shot and see if Dolly could act. I was a little pessimistic at first and thought the movie would be ok at best and Dolly Parton would be atrocious but it was quite the opposite. Although Dolly was pretty much playing herself she was very easy to watch and put on a pretty solid performance. Jane Fonda was equally as solid in her role too but it was the lesser known Lily Tomlin that for me stole the show and stood out the most. The trio of women really worked well together and their boss, played by Dabney Coleman, was brilliant also. While it wasn't a perfect piece of cinematic comedy it was an easy, enjoyable way to spend the best part of 2 hours.
Killjoy (2000)
WOW this was bad
Never heard of this film beforehand but seen it as a 4 movie set for £5 and thought can't really go wrong paying £1.25 per film.
Finally got round to watching this the other day and i didn't quite expect it to be as bad as it was. I now fully understand why it was so cheap.
Everything in the movie was pretty horrible; the acting, the camera quality, the score (sounded like i was watching a 1970s porn movie I'm baffled as to how this became a 4 movie series thing. It's the only movie which has made me question my judgement in buying a DVD despite never hearing of the movie.
Just avoid at all costs!
