Hallowed (2005)
Good "B" Movie quality...
What sets hallowed apart from other films I have seen that could be considered a "B" movie? Well for starters, it overuses every cliché in the book, and does it with class. The killings? they're cheesy beyond belief, and the ending? WOW is all I can say. I laughed, I jumped, I thought, and I trembled. The film was shot on digital, which worked perfect for the film because of the flexibility it offers. Deep down I know it wanted to be serious, but it was so hard to do so. The dialogue invoked chuckles, the acting was stiff, and the plot, well lets say you could eliminate some walking for some solid prologue and epilogue space. BUT. That said, I enjoyed watching this film from start to finish because I expected nothing and received a pure gem. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes horror or "B" movies.
Superman Returns (2006)
I do believe a man can fly!
I read the reviews. It was disheartening to me, who loved the original Superman: The Movie, that Bryan Singer had ruined the film. I sat down in the theater with my Superman Slurpie and my eyes stuck to the screen for 2 1/2 hours. When it was over, I was in awe. Sure, there was corny stuff, and a plot point that I didn't prefer, but the film was so overwhelmingly awesome that those are minor details in the big picture. Starting off with the march, the film doesn't stop for anyone to catch up. The visuals were in itself worth the 9 dollar ticket. IF YOU DO NOT SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN, DO NOT SEE IT AT ALL. This is one of the films you'll want to tell your kids YOU saw it when it was first in theaters, just as my dad did for the original Superman: The Movie. Sure, its not the original, but the thing is when you're watching it, you don't really care. It keeps the camp of the 70's film, but takes it in a more serious direction as the film progresses. Finally, Kevin Spacy is spec-tac-ular as Lex Luthor. I could feel the Gene Hackman vibe with a dash of Spacey's wit and delivery. Superman has returned, and it seems that we really do need him after all. Top 5 movie of the year so far!
