Lower Learning (2008)
A Waste
Well, a waste of Cordry, at least. I really wish the writers and editors hadn't been lazy for this film, it coulda been funny. It was fimed well but thats not saying much when the material was lacking. It was a series of throwaway dark skits. Like, maybe, a bunch of deleted Upright Citizen Brigade scenes, not quite ready for the big show. A lot of the little story ideas were good but when they were put together for a full length film, they just didn't seem to work. Try again, writer/director guy, but this time, maybe write a better outline and make sure you know what you want the the audience to feel and, most of all, write BETTER jokes.

A Lot Better Than The "Critics" Let On *spoilers*
I just got this at THE LIBRARY where I go every once in a while to get obscure Criterion and foreign movies and, only because of an interview with the interesting Fonda, did I see this and decide to snag it for the hell of it AND because nothing has been coming out at Blockbuster lately. The reason I never snagged it before is because of the reviews, although not horrid, weren't promising either. None of the reviewers whom I respect crushed the film but they didn't seem to like the way the last act happened, the cliché' happy ending but I didn't see any real happy conclusion. In the end, the daughter goes to hug the mom, yes, but their problems are FAR from over. The mom is still an alcoholic, the daughter, a 17 year old, hasn't trusted anyone since being twelve and has had no therapy. This is a "hopeful ending" which is what it should be. Anyway, I have to say I love when I think something is going to suck and it doesn't. That was the case here. I found this interesting and true to form. I've known girls like Rachel. Girls who are beautiful but had things happen to them in their past that screw them up in their later lives. They acted a lot like this but thats not all. I like the way the story doesn't really know where to go in some places just like people when confronted with extraordinary and sudden unpleasant situations. Good flick. 8/10 stars.
