Immaculate (2024)
Seriously Boring
I got through half of it and wanted a refund already. Scary it was not. Pathetic and downright offensive to Catholics, and I'm not even Catholic. It made 'Autopsy of Jane Doe' look like an action packed thriller. Where do they film these lame movies about Catholic corruption and scandal? Do actual churches allow these filming locations out of desperation for money? Even the Nun movies were more interesting. Under no circumstances should you pay money for online viewing, or you'll regret it. No more films about convents or young nuns being set up for misery. That dead horse has been beaten to a pulp fiction. Lets leave the Catholics alone from now on.
Poor Things (2023)
I can't believe Emma Stone won...
...best actress for this flick. Someone typed: "The film dares to ask boldly all the deepest and most relevant questions in our life". That sex is the center of our lives? Capitalism is unfair? This film is not sophisticated or profound. It was gross and shallow. Proof that what mainstream viewers are watching verses what Hollywood elites view as quality film making are two different things. Someone wrote: A philosophical journey of questioning values of society...and the true meaning of life." How sad that sex and socialism should spawn such childish emotions from a viewing audience that plays victim. But Barbi won recognition as well, which was a sad year for oscar.
Ancient Aliens (2009)
They've made some good points
How can huge carved blocks of stone that are many tons in weight be moved long distances? We can't do that with trees and primitive tools, so how did people thousands of years ago? Blocks cut so precise that you could cut your hand on the edges. Today's archeologists have no explanations that are believable. The questions are valid and no one wants to risk ridicule for explaining the topics in many of the episodes. Why couldn't ancient cultures have been influenced by aliens? We've already seen the digital recording of the flying Tic Tacs that our own navy can't explain. Space travel is out of the question? I think not.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
The usual...
....Martin Scorsese violence-fest. It's his trademark and it's getting old. What is Scorsese's fixation with murder? Dull storyline and with unbelievable characters that murder constantly - and get away with it to the point of absurdity. Even Barbie was more believable, but it's sad that idiots actually think these two films should win awards. It's sad that Native Americans got dragged into this dog of a film. The acting was flaky and the premise was pretentious. The audience and all Native Americans should receive reparations just for watching this film. More proof that critics are shallow minded idiots.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Excellent film deserving of awards
All star cast and outstanding account of Robert Oppenheimer's life, and the injustice he faced after he spoke out against the A-Bomb. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey were worthy of awards with their performances. The background was realistic and historic accuracy was exceptional. This is a history film worth watching, and hopefully those who never experienced the damage of the hunt for Communists will learn why destroying people's reputations is senseless. Oppenheimer then led the generation of the late 50's and 60's into an introspection of why no one survives the final war. He helped to educate future generations.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
As good as it gets for the Godzilla subject
They revisited the first film for Godzilla and put an interesting story line behind it. The viewer becomes attached to the human characters in the film and Godzilla, while Godzilla himself is reduced to the level of pure jerk. Godzilla in other films fought and defeated other monsters, as a kind of hero, but that's not the case here. This version is simply bare bones survival for the humans. The special effects are some of the best I've seen in films. The depiction of post war Tokyo was awesome. Right down to the details of what transit trains looked like and how they were built in that era. A lot of research went into this film to make the audience accept the back ground as realistic. One of the hero's of the film was a fighter plane called the Shinden (Superfortress Interceptor), which really did exist as a secret weapon against the U. S. As a kid, I built a model of this plane, so I knew what it could do. The only let down was the dismissal of American forces during this time period. The excuse used was that American involvement could trigger a conflict with the Soviets, which I don't believe. If you've never seen a Godzilla film, this one is worth the time.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves (2023)
Sheridan has done it again.
This series is outstanding. It reminds me of a mini series I like called, 'Godless'. The west was harsh but Bass is fair and just in a time when life was cheap. A former slave guided by Biblical ethics. What a great story and cast. Dennis Quad is authentic wild west, and David Oyelowo is the black law man with a natural sense of justice. If you like other Sheridan series like Yellowstone, 1883, Tulsa King and others, you'll like this series as well. The westerns are making a comeback, but in the form of series and miniseries for membership only. That's because the true west should never be subjected to editing for the faint of heart and pious.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Just as entertaining as Downton Abbey
Carrie Coon who plays Bertha Russell has stolen the show. Bertha and her husband want power and as much as they can get. The wealthy were the rock stars of the late 19th century and that still holds true today. We want to know all about them. My only complaint is that you have to spend a lot of money to see the second season, which is coming out every week episode by episode. All the characters are relatable and their motives are understandable in protecting their interests and loved ones. The background settling is breathtaking and the detail in writing is excellent. Relaxing entertainment, with a little more conflict than in Downton.
Expedition Bigfoot (2019)
Much Like the series, 'Finding Bigfoot'.
If it takes numerous seasons to get a great video of Bigfoot in the wild, then Bigfoot is either fake, or the scariest species on the planet, if it's really that elusive. Either we're being hoaxed by "moneymakers", or we're on the menu if this species reproduces. Every episode I see, I have to wonder, will we get an up close vivid video of this beast or will it be another let down. Sometimes when I watch it, I feel like Charlie Brown when Lucy again holds the football and talks him into trying to kick it. If this series doesn't produce evidence then I'll conclude I've been hosed again by Hollywood.
The Nun II (2023)
I liked the first film better..
...but the first three quarters of the film was well done. The ending was a little too wild for me. Too much display of power on the part of the demon. The actors were wonderful, the back ground was awesome and the storyline had potential. But they just went a little too far with the ending. Some creative ideas were incorporated in the sequel, but for the most part it reminded me of the action adventure superhero movies where too much razzle dazzle show of strength can ruin a film. It wasn't a creepy nail biter like 'Lights Out', and according to testimonies from real exorcists, no demon can do that many 'show of strength' stunts. It was fun to see in the theater, but I can't recommend renting it some day for those that haven't seen it.
Secrets of Playboy (2022)
Best Series on TV
Hef finally gets busted, but no one wanted to go after him when he was alive or they'd get sued. Yes, lawsuits scare people and so do implied threats from a corporate empire. I had a lady friend who told me about life in the mansion, and the real Hef. She said no one would believe it if the truth was presented. How many women had to step forward to bring Cosby to court? Cosby use to hang out at the mansion all the time. Hef was giving out Quaaludes to his close friends. Fifty women had a problem with Cosby and now, history repeats itself as the defenders of Hef continue to condemn this series. This series is going into a second season, and Hef's defenders haven't even addressed season one's testimonials. Funny how people condemn the film, and admit they didn't watch all 12 episodes of season one. They'll miss season two as well. Heads in the sand, as the truth is revealed.
Blue Bloods (2010)
The first two seasons....
...were pretty good. But with Bridget Moynaham, Jennifer Esposito and Andrea Roth, I can't help wondering if Tom Selleck picked the smok'in hot actresses. Donnie Wahberg steals the show with his Dennis Franz-like character, in which every episode offers his wise-guy questioning and arguing, which is pretty funny. Not to mention the 'ol Det. Andy Sipowicz, dirty cop anger issues that Wahberg walks around with. Selleck is philosophical since this show does a great job of keeping up with socio-legal conflicting issues that we read about in the news. It's a good show, but after a few seasons you'll feel like you're watching 'Army Wives' and 'NYPD Blue'. 13 seasons and counting....
Harlots (2017)
My new favorite series.....
I just love this series, and the acting was outstanding. Jessica Brown Findlay was so sexy in this series. Remember her from Downton Abby? Lesley Manville and Samantha Morton did some of the best acting I've ever seen. This is a series about 18th century feminism. It shows that sex workers should be treated as human beings. It also showed the cruel and unusual punishment in 1763. Every actor in this series did a great job. Yes there is sex and profanity, but it's true to life in 18th century London. One in six women in London were in prostitution. For them, it was survival. This series pays tribute to those who deserved to be treated human, but never got the luxury.
Doc Martin (2004)
What a great comedy
Quality entertainment from the U. K. The comedy writers are brilliant. I love the characters, the wit and wisdom. I highly recommend that you watch each episode. It's final season is being presented, so join the party. Doc Martin is the poster boy for awkward, and he's lucky enough to find a beautiful women. But for a man who spent his life with his nose in text books, the social graces escape him daily. They end up teaching each other, as a great partnership should be. That's assuming they can stay together, which is the ongoing fight. Your entertainment time is important, so spend some time in one of the most beautiful towns by the shore on television.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Don't bother watching it.
How do you create a ten episode miniseries that would equal Netflix's miniseries 'The Haunting at Hill House.' Well you don't do it by creating 'Devil In Ohio'. If Hallmark channel made a horror mini-series, this would be it. It started out interesting, and turned lame. The actors tried hard, but couldn't salvage this slow sinking Titanic. When this much money is spent creating a mini-series, a focus group of experienced and seasoned adult horror fans should be presented the script. There needs to be a stink test before making a financial commitment. Horror has become the new supreme drama in American culture, and you'll never get these hours back if you watch this series.
Yellowstone (2018)
Sons of Anarchy on Horses....
....and that's about it. Sheridan was in SOA and played the sheriff. He then stole the idea from American screenwriter and producer Kurt Sutter. The Linson brothers partnered with Sheridan to make this series, which has become like a cartoon by the fourth season. I own all 4 seasons on DVD. If you enjoy watching cowboys being branded by branding irons and beaten with them, then you'll get your jollies. Some scripts are ok, but it's mostly Jaime Dutton's character who has the most interesting legal take defending the family ranch from developers who hire assassins. Lots of violence but also disjointed store line with characters that disappear with no explanation. The scripts are geared for conservative cowboys with anger issues that think they're smarter than the rest of the world. Lots of folksy philosophy and MAGA agenda schooling. Can't recommend it to respectable people.
Sex Education (2019)
I love this show
IMDb has a Trivia section for the 'Sex Education' series. It's a good idea to read the entire section. Very interesting. Example: "The show's British writer, Laurie Nunn, said she intended Sex Education to be an homage to the John Hughes high school films of the 1980s, such as The Breakfast Club (1985) and Pretty in Pink (1986)." _____And lets not forget the movie, 'Sixteen Candles' , which is most like this series. I love this series since it's mostly non-violent, like 'The L Word'. And just like The L Word, there are sex scenes in Sex Education, which might turn people off who don't like that. So be warned. But I loved watching this series throughout the pandemic months. I needed something to cheer me up, and this series did that. Yes, it's sophomoric, but still endearing in the life lessons learned. It's a series about relationships, and developing sexual awareness to keeping your partner happy. Season 3 was awesome and season 4 will rock.
Mrs. America (2020)
I loved it.
This is a rare historic docu-drama of the early feminist movement from the sixties to the seventies, and the misguided radical right that misrepresented the ERA to undermine it. But it also gives you insights into the main players on the political chess board on both sides. This is very well done one season mini-series, that's well worth watching. .Rose Byrne stole the show playing Gloria Steinem, and. Cate Blanchett as Phyllis Schlafly. This mini-series has an all star cast with attention to detail to historic content. I could easily watch it again someday. Enjoy.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Seriously Boring
I was reading someone else's view on this film, and they candidly admitted that the first hour was simply a lame documentary of the '60's that encourages the viewers to guess all the obscure Hollywood references to actors, film projects and commercials from the '60's. The story line focused on a loser actor who's career was going down the toilet. The second half of the film focused on the Manson cult and its victims. Barely fun, but I actually lived through the '60's. In real life, Tates father had to clean his daughter's blood out of the carpet of the home they rented. Sorry, but it's just not funny. Happy ending to the film, for the wasted time to get there. Pitt was the only fun in the film.
The L Word (2004)
I love it
I think it's every bit as good as Mad Men. This series is a true delight. Intelligently written so viewers can learn about lesbians, and enjoy their funny and dramatic lives. They did a great job with this series. All the characters are interesting, and inspire viewers to go out and find a group of friends to share their lives together. No sense in giving it away with spoilers. Just watch the first season and you'll like it. It's easy to get attached to these friendly characters with community minded values. I've watched the entire series three times now, and I learn more every time I see it. It's now my favorite series of all time, simply because I feel better after watching it.
The Dead Files (2011)
Best paranormal show.....
...on TV. Whether you believe in the paranormal, or you believe that Amy is a physical medium, it's entertaining. There is no middle ground. No gray area since there are no stories like this on other shows. They've even been to places that other paranormal shows have explored and Amy comes up with a different take on the nature of the haunting. Like the episode where she investigated the Lizzy Borden home. I like the cast for this show and I believe them. I might be gullible and proven wrong, but I believe in the afterlife as well. And that's what this show is all about. I've always been a skeptic regarding the paranormal, but they make the subject interesting and thought provoking. I respect people of faith, agnostics and atheists.
On the Basis of Sex (2018)
10 stars
A 6.8? This film is a 10 star film. Unlike most films, it actually has an educational value. Every actor did a great job. And yes, that's what society was like in the 50's and 60's. Kind-a sucked. The only people that thought this film was bad or "too political" are the people that disagreed with her cause. Fox News gave it two thumbs down because it's the only media outlet that still thinks women belong in the kitchen. Oops...too political? Live in a one income household and email me about your great lifestyle with far less income.
Mr. Mercedes (2017)
Best Horror series on TV
Brendan Gleeson and Justine Lupe as 'Holly' stole the show with their characters. Harry Treadaway re-defined the word creepy as the evil villain. You must see the whole series from start to finish and season three is on the way. Mary-Louise Parker has a part and enhances the series like so many other actors, like Kelly Lynch from 'Roadhouse', who gave a great performance. This show is filled with surprises, and I have no intention of spoiling anything. It's unpredictable, just the way most people like a story line. Run with it.
The Final Countdown (1980)
It could have been more interesting.....
If you felt a patriotic surge and got turned on by watching Tomcats smoke Zeros, then you got played. Didn't they use to call them 'exploitation films'? Like Charles Bronson shooting thugs because they deserved it. I'm just guessing, but if you and your carrier were to ever go through a duel Dimensional Vortex I'd guess you'd either come out the other end as smoking hamburger or the carrier reactor would go critical. I didn't know vortexes screamed like a pack of banshees. It would've been more interesting if the actual Admiral Nimitz was called to the Pacific to find a charred 1980 era carrier and burnt up crew, and Nimitz had to piece together what happened, and reverse engineer advanced technology to win the war.
I'm not a navy man, but there seemed to be some strange events in this film beyond the vortex, and it had to do with the writing. Aren't carrier battle groups commanded by admirals? How is a carrier captain in control of all those ships? I thought the rear admiral is in command as a safety net for the captain 'in training to become an admiral', but what do I know. And then the captain ordered the destroyers to return to Pearl in order "to avoid the oncoming storm"? A carrier left in open sea with the Russian fishing trawler and possible Russian attack sub are in the area? Escort ships leave the carrier behind? Strange, since all the navy documentaries I've watched had admirals in command of battle groups and escort ships never leave the carriers. And the USS Nimitz was the flagship back then. Who knows. It just looked half baked.
What we did learn from the film is to never fish senators out of the ocean, or at least toss them out of the choppers once identified.
I don't think Kirk D. knew how to approach this film from an actor's standpoint, but James Frarentino and Charles Durning were worth watching. They were the reason I gave it three stars.
Green Book (2018)
What a Wonderful Film
I like a film that entertains with comedy and drama. This film has a good message about race problems in the '60's, and what people were subjected to. Everything about this film is perfect. Great cast that deserve recognition, and a story line with educational value. Please see this film when you get a chance. It's not boring, and your family can see it as well. Just not young children, but 12 and older perhaps
