The Lunchbox (2013)
Warm. Sweet. Beautiful. "The Lunchbox" is a masterpiece.
I had originally intended to watch "Elysium" this weekend but as the tickets were sold out I had to settle for "The Lunchbox" and boy was I glad I watched this. This movie is centered on the interactions of two strangers (played by Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur) whose lives are changed after finding each other through the unlikeliest circumstances.
Irrfan Khan brilliantly plays the character of Saajan Fernandes – a regular government employee at the end of his career, anticipating retirement. Being a widower, Saajan is lonely and anxious regarding his future. He is uncertain about retirement and has the same concerns any elderly person would have at the end of their career. This character is developed amazingly by Irrfan Khan with his exceptional acting abilities.
The beautiful Nimrat Kaur takes on the character of Ila. Ila is the average house wife of Mumbai in her early thirties. She tends to the cooking and cleaning of the house while taking care of her child. She is married to a busy man and often finds herself neglected, alone and seeking companionship. Nimrat Kaur plays her role with great skill, bringing Ila to life and captivating the imagination and emotions of the viewers with her very natural, real and relatable expressions.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays the third important character very well, adding to the light heartedness of this movie.
The course of the lives of Saajan and Ila takes a very abrupt turn when they find each other through a serendipitous exchange of lunch boxes. This fortunate accident then develops in to a conversation between the two through letters describing the events of the days of each other's lives and eventually falling in love with each other without even having met in person.
The movie has been directed magnificently by Ritesh Batra. The portrayal of the lives of the two people and the lunch box is done so well that within the first few minutes you will be find yourself relating to the characters and their circumstances. The soft dialogue, highly developed characters, situational comedy - fantastically brought out by the very natural expressions of the actors and screen play will make you laugh at the characters, smile with them, feel sorry for them and fall in love with them.
Irrespective of whether you are into Indian cinema or not, you should go watch this movie. There are no clichés in this movie and no item songs. However, it will certainly appeal to the young, and the old and the anxious person inside of you.
9/10 - Loved it!
World War Z (2013)
Zombie flick of the year!
World War Z gets its concept from the novel written by Max Brooks. Although this movie is not an exact adaptation of the book it still impresses in its portrayal of the zombie apocalypse seen through the eyes of UN employee Gerry Lane (enacted by Brad Pitt). Gerry Lane has been tasked with investigating the outbreak of a virus that turns humans into mindless, angry zombies similar to those infected with the Rage virus (28 Days Later) and pushes mankind towards extinction. The zombies in World War Z are far scarier than any you've ever seen on TV before.
The movie starts thrilling right from the very beginning and is fast paced with many startling moments that will keep you on the edge of the seat. I watched it in 3D and I must say that I really enjoyed the effects. There were moments when I reflexively ducked to avoid an undead arm from grabbing my throat! The cast played their characters very well and were complemented with dialogue far more meaningful than your average zombie flick, good screenplay and a very intense soundtrack.
This is by far the most realistic and thrilling zombie flick I have seen since 28 Weeks Later and will be on the must watch movies list of this year. Fans of the apocalypse will love it! A thrilling ride for everyone is guaranteed.
8/10 Enjoy!
Man of Steel (2013)
Best Superman movie ever made and probably the best of this year! Do not miss this.
Forget the critics. Man of Steel is a whole new look at Superman and not just another remake of the original. A perfect composition of effects, action, characters and an intriguing plot. Top notch cinematography, screenplay, soundtracks and casting - Lois and Clark are great and Clark finally has a very well developed character. Fast-paced with lots of action and momentary pauses to catch your breath at dramatic scenes invoking emotion. Great watch for any one who enjoys a movie, brilliant to super hero fans and will be orgasmic for fans of the Superman series. Although Iron Man 3 was good and a much awaited World War Z is on the way, Man of Steel will have its own class. My take: go for it. Awe will not be denied you. 4.5/5 Enjoy!
