I know nothing about film production, and certainly not about finance. I won't diss the actors, because I blame the script above all. Let me suggest an exercise, though. Watch "Alienated", and then watch the first three episodes of "I Am Not Okay With This". Or do it the other way around. If that comparison is too unfair, use the 1997 Australian film "Alien Visitor".
By comparing the dialogue in the two, you'll get a good idea how flat or stilted some of the conversations in "Alienated" are. The worst were the discussions between the male lead and his associate scientist, which were both wooden and rushed. Compare more realistic dialogue between two scientists in other scripts.
The sub-plot with the lone UFO fanatic could be axed completely--the presence of the female alien is enough, the danger of her discovery as an alien is implicit.
Too much time and attention was spent on the male lead's family--his father's problems didn't mesh with the rom-com story.
The male lead's complaint of betrayal after reaching the ship was jarring, and belied the supposed relationship with the female alien.
