What a damn movie
29 April 2024
Tennis has never been more exciting. A sexy, personal, electrifying gem of a film that continually edges you right up until the final burst of relief. I couldn't stop smiling watching this love triangle be messy and manipulative and beautiful and smart and so intimately conniving in a way that you just had to sit back and admire. Luca Guadagnino wraps me around his finger once again with his ability to romanticize things you would never think to be sexy, and his up close, gorgeous film style just works perfectly. Also, the score?! Truly some of the best movie music that just works so well. I loved this. Maybe 1 am into sports.

Wow
16 April 2024
Oh my god. Wow. What in incredibly smart, infinitely mind blowing, deeply deeply unsettling sci-fi movie. Guests at a dinner party start to notice things aren't quite right while a comet glides by earth. This is super low budget (looks like it was filmed with a camcorder half the time) and it allows for such an intimate and natural feel to this already intimate dinner party. Quantum physics is scary. The universe is scary. Note to self: don't go check on the only house with lights on during a black out. 10/10 absolutely recommend if you want a very solid sci-fi to leave you speechless and to make you question your own reality.

Ugh
27 March 2024
Let me be clear, I did not see this because I thought it would be good. I saw this because although Sidney Sweeney cannot act, she is very good at emotional acting and the reviews were not terrible. I thought I'd give her a try in a different genre. I give this a 4/10. She proved me correct again, she cannot act, but yeah, her emotional parts and moments of desperation were very good. Messy concept, messy plot, boring execution, but was pretty at points I guess and had the bones. Now I just have to figure out words to meet the character count. So please ignore the rest of my review as it has nothing to do with the movie.

Are you guys ok?

Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand where 70% of the confusion about this movie comes from. They say *multiple* times that it's other countries that turned against the US. They even say "one thing about having power is that everyone else will hate you for it" when the dad from the government was talking about the secret meetings the higher powers had. Did no one pay attention? They even *list out* and describe the ways other countries would use this form of attack, bc that's what was happening to them. Like it's in the script. They say all this stuff. There aren't aliens, some supernatural force, no toxic air. It's literally other countries attacking us to have a civil war so we can take ourselves out (again, there's a whole speech in the movie about it after the entire Kevin Bacon scene)

Thanksgiving (I) (2023)

A full meal
4 December 2023
Woot woot! Slashers are officially reborn. Thanksgiving was a full meal. This was a great whodunnit that was a love letter to the slashers of the 80s-90s that started it all. Think of this as a holiday Scream. Some great kills (I'll never jump on a trampoline again), on-par cheesy one liners, and of course the typical tropes we've all come to associate with slasher films (friend groups, the suspicious boyfriend, the too friendly side character, etc). Even its most over the-top and unbelievable moments I just had to smile at because it's exactly what would've been made in 1998. This is a slasher, not an Oscar winning script, so go in, have fun, and save room for dessert.

Wow
17 November 2023
Wow. What a hard, hard watch. Although it felt like 7 hours long, every minute was painstakingly thought out to unravel such a horrifying and disgusting murder mystery of the Osage nation (this entire story actually happened). It's beautifully shot, great writing and acting all around, but such a tough watch for facing a dark story in our country's history. I'm so glad Apple broke into the TV/movie business because their stuff keeps getting better. This is an artisanal film, full of depth and a heavy subject matter, and well worth the 3.5hr runtime (if you can sit there that long) about a story that desperately needs to be told.

Eyes rolled so hard they fell out
11 November 2023
Ugh. Let me start by saying I'm writing this while only being half way done
  • I just don't think my views will change by the end. I really, really dislike this movie. It took me 3 tries to even make it to the halfway point; it's *so* absurdly boring. It's melodramatic in a way that makes you roll your eyes so hard that you whisper "oh my god" to yourself, tries to be so artsy and "full of commentary" they forget to actually make a solid story for the general public and seems like its intended audience is solely for film critics and pretentious snobs. Its shock factor moments are just that: there to shock, not for added value. They happen so randomly at incoherent parts of the story that it's like "where in the world did that come from??" Literally nothing about this movie makes sense, even though you (kind of?) get the gist of what they were trying to do. Skarsgard is drowned out in this random hodgepodge of a movie, and even the (always) incredible Mia Goth couldn't save this from damnation. Sorry, Infinity Pool, I'm getting out and headed to the hot tub.

Wow
6 October 2023
I thought I was immune to horror by now, but once again an exorcism movie makes me believe otherwise pun intended). Maybe it's because I saw it in IMAX, or maybe it's because I was raised Catholic, but this movie does not hold back. The child actresses were fantastic. I jumped within the first 20 seconds of the movie (no joke). Was white knuckled the entire time, literally was tearing up, my heart beat was the through the roof, I was sweating. This movie is SCARY. The callbacks to The Exorcist I and 3 were so subtly done and twisted just enough that this felt like a whole new take on the franchise with perfect nostalgia. This has it all. Deeply unsettling psychological horror. Terrifying imagery. Awesome jump scares. And the return of iconic characters. And the ending? I am severely depressed and disturbed. Can't believe we have 2 more of these coming out.

The Nun II (2023)

Horror movie? More like a Disneyland ride
9 September 2023
I think I need to shift my perspective on what The Nun movies are supposed to be. The Conjuring films are great, full of scares, great writing. Annabelle is also pretty freaky. The Nun... feels more like Indiana Jones or a Disneyworld ride. Made-for-amusement-park action, props, and themes. Each time I go in expecting to be freaked out by "the greatest evil in the Conjuring Universe" just to walk away feeling like I went through a haunted house at Six Flags. The Nun II was not scary, barely interesting, and quite honestly boring at times. Conjuring Universe I love you, but let's send the Nun back to hell for good.

Holy fear. Terrifying
21 June 2023
Wow. Exorcism movies are generally pretty scary to me anyway, so this already had it going for me. However, I did not expect to be outright terrified by this film. It has everything you need not just in an exorcism movie, but a horror movie. Suspense, intrigue, characters to root for (Emily) and downright terrifying sequences that will leave you shaking. This movie feels raw and natural, it feels primal. It shows the turmoil and destruction, and the chaos and fear. Everything about this movie just works and it became a classic for a reason. If you need to be scared, watch this immediately and you won't regret if.

Could've been an amazing 30 min short film
18 January 2023
????? ?????? Don't even know what to say Some loved this movie. Some hated this movie. I fall inbetween. It's less a movie and more of an abstract art piece of different (very dark) shots and clips of things happening (or not happening) around a house where the windows and doors mysteriously vanished leaving 2 young children trapped inside with...something. It's extremely boring, nothing happens on screen, but I do have to say the jump scares got me GOOD. Some parts were very creepy and it had great atmospheric potential and I could see the vision they had, but it felt more like a grad school project with a budget of $10. It's Paranormal Activity's less formed, visually darker, weirder, younger sibling. Art is great - but when a movie relies too much on being abstract, they forget to actually create a film.

Chucky: Chucky Actually (2022)
Season 2, Episode 8
4/10
??
15 January 2023
Season 2 was lots more underwhelming than season 1 especially this finale. It skipped ahead and created random storylines from the previous episode. Suddenly everyone is ok and not worried and having a Very Potter Christmas? Then they use Glee transition scores? Is this a finale, or campy mock? Why did it turn into glee. No idea. Nothing makes sense. Stories were skipped. Energy was changed. Was this the finale or mid season break? No matter what. V confused. It seemed like it tried to be very on par with millennial ideals and it took it to the extreme of the reasons why people hate millennial shows. This was not the direction it should've taken.

Different, but not bad
23 October 2022
Just saw Ends, and it's not nearly as bad as you lot make it out to be. It's misunderstood and here's why. It is very different from what I think we all were expecting, and I hoped there was more showdown action, but overall I think it's an interesting way to conclude the story. Great soundtrack, some good old school gore effects, and an evolution of Michael we've never seen. This movie was good for what it was, but no it's not your typical Michael slasher terrorizing the town story. From the get-go this movie teased and referenced a metamorphosis of Michael - right in the opening credits we see the pumpkin transforming over and over again (something that's never happened before in the title credits). I think this movie was poking fun and being aware of itself and it's many variations of sequels. That even with Corey (that's all I'll say) and all new versions of Michael and stories since 1978, nothing will be able to replace Michael or replicate him no matter how hard they try to. Michael can't "give the torch" to a new generation of people, because Michael IS the torch, and we saw that come to play here. The biggest homage and plus for me was the intense feeling of "he's somewhere lurking" throughout the movie, something I haven't felt since the OG in '78. That even when Michael wasn't present, we feel his presence. Halloween 2018 dealt with personal trauma of Michael, Halloween Kills was community trauma of Michael, and Halloween Ends was everlasting trauma Michael continued to cause, even if he didnt do anything.

I feel my soul blossoming
4 May 2022
I have never felt this way after a movie that I feel now. I left the theater delirious, feeling drunk almost. I laughed. I cried. I felt despair, and hope, and everything all at the same time. I made it home just in time for me to bawl again and then laugh. This movie is a masterpiece of cinema, and a masterpiece of life. Run, don't walk, to see this movie.

One of my favorites!

This is one of my favorites in the franchise! He's the scariest in this one by far and brutal. The Carrie spin was kind of fun as well. Definitely give it a shot!

Not as bad as people say
26 February 2022
Okay, yes the writing wasn't good at first but it did get better. There was a moment or two where simple physics and body health don't match lol but overall I thought it was so fun and great! Very suspenseful and loved the ending. For some reason Leatherface will always be one of the scarier figures for me with the chainsaw, and this installment I thought lived up to that pretty well.

Eye roll

It had all the makings of a great horror movie, but it just wasn't. It was so so boring, with a few interesting scenes sprinkled in there. Was awesomely shot, loved the nature horror scenes, but it just was not a good movie overal.

Absolutely fantastic
15 January 2022
THIS is how you bring back a franchise after a decade. This movie was everything we needed from Scream and more. The meta references were better than ever, Ghostface was brutal, so funny at times, directing was awesome, and just flat out fun. I am so happy with this installment.

Wtf
28 November 2021
Whoever wrote Chris Rock's character needed to be fired. I can't tell if he's just not a good actor unless it's comedy, or if it's his voice, or if the writing really is just that bad. Probably all three. Whatever it is, his character and his portrayal of it is so insufferable I almost turned off the movie in the first 20 minutes.

He's dead. She can break a single finger of his and remove him from the handcuffs and she's free. Entire movie is over. I don't understand why she never once did anything to his hand.

Not as good, but still good!!
3 October 2021
I think this is going to turn into the next Saw, as in a torture franchise with many sequels. Not giving spoilers, but the plot twist at the end is v similar to what happens in Saw, and definitely sets it up for more.

So much fun
26 September 2021
I love James Wan, and his directing style shines bright in this movie. It's so much fun, part thriller, part murder mystery, part action. The only thing it's missing are the scares, which is pretty essential for a horror movie. I wouldn't classify this as horror, because of that. I would say it's more a thriller/mystery. But I loved it, had lots of fun, kept me on my toes, but no, it's not scary.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Healing.
26 January 2021
I just went through a massive grief episode about a week before I watched this movie, so I was a little nervous it would make me cry and feel it all over again. And yup, it definitely made me cry, but in a healing way. The message in this movie is beautiful and healing and incredibly real for those who have gone through grief. It helped me heal while listening to the stories and message in this movie, and at the end I felt calm and relief. This movie was a physical description of everything I've felt bottled inside, and it was cathartic to see it play out so perfectly on screen. Incredible.
