Ad Astra (2019)
An allstar cast in a mediocre SF movie
Movie is unfortunately full of errors that made it barely watchable. The clumsiness went on and on as if no law of physics was taken in any consideration. Like aiming for the capsule, that would bring the main character back to earth, by lauching himself from a turning microwave/radar antenna. Going through the rings of Neptune, what would be expected is that the impact of the stones in this rings would case a decrease of speed but thus did not seem to be the case. Or the launch of the rocket from Mars that did not seem to have any impact in the climb and entering of the main character in the rocket.
Then the unlogical stupidity that other people continuously expose. Like the brutal dragging of him by the militairy personel on the ground after landing on earth. What would have been more expected is that they would be careful with a human that probably had been into space for a long period of time before landing on earth.
Writing could have been done with some greater care.
Dirty Lines (2022)
Already a Dutch classic from the start!
Everything is there to take you right back in time to the end of the 80's, supported by hilarious scenes, typical Dutch dialogues, hairstyling, the Amsterdam afmosphere and loads of totally correct technical details. It sometimes is a bit too much docu-drama like but that is OK.
The only comment regarding quality I have to make is about the (typical) crappyness of the sound, which was has been a trademark in so many Dutch movies and television series over many years that has passed, and left me to take 2 stars away which I honestly regret doing so. I then ask myself why would this (again) be the case because the sloppy lipsyncing and badly recorded and/or mixed voiceover do not match the beautiful visual elements of this series and the stunning cast.
Highly recommendable.
On the Verge (2021)
Warning: watching could end up in a total waste of time
How could you write something that completely does not make any sense after 2.5 episodes. How does this work out in a writer's head? Also, what is the joy of wasting other people's time?
6.5? Absolutely not! Way below the 6 this needs to be. Absolute total timerobbing this is.
Ça ira mieux demain (2000)
Never made it to the end
Although I tried multiple attempts to finish it before Netflix removed it from their contents shortly after, the storyline, if any, was that booring to finish watching and not fall asleep after a few minutes, every time I restarted it. This rarely happens to me and is more or less a pity despite of its great cast.
Se upp för dårarna (2007)
Highly underrated
It is a great feelgood movie with only some poor choice of sound designing here and there.
Watching quite some Helena Bergström movies where she is an actor there is a strong influence of her to be felt in it.
Which I like. It has a nice 'speed' as well.
Not too much Police Academy stuff in it, something I was a bit afraid of.
Very recommendable.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Kristen Bell at her best, all rest a bit mêh
If you already love Kristen Bell you are about to love her even more after seeing this. She totally gives it all.
But about the story... went perfectly allright till the last 2 episode for me. Think everything before that was of another quality.
The last episode felt like it was cut here and there with scizzors.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Inducing violence among kids
Therefore I vote it in the gutter, because it is now influencing our young kid at school that are hurting each other in the yard while copying it.
Stowaway (2021)
OK beginning, bit disappointing end and... too much illogical actions
When you do a movie about space travel that is not in the scifi corner any more and could have taken pleace within a reasonable near future, or perhaps even now with a little bit of fantasy, you gotta do your homework better and do it right when it comes down to details. Once you then start to cut corners you end up with nothing serious and a pile of annoying rubbish instead.
Spoiler alert:
Oxigen tanks of which the crew's lives depend on without safety lines so once you let go, it is just gone? Or climbing without safety? (2nd attempt to get to the oxigin tank which was left behind). Climbing with clambs and decending without? Must be really good gloves not to get burned by the friction.
And are these tanks not just a little too small to make a difference?
These non-realistic details that were put into the story were annoying enough for me to qualify this below 6.
And the start was good and promising. Maybe a bit more drama and character deepening in addition to the purge of the illogical goofyness and contra-scientific details would lift this movie to a higher level.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Netflix must be spoofed
When it states that in my country this is at no. 7 of the top 10 watchlist.
Poor country, otherwise.
Unless... everybody is so curious why it is so bad regarding the super low rating here.... hahaha!
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Nice mystery story
A good binge watcher! Fabulous cast, great quality acting and overall quality level. The only tiny bit of critic is the very last scene that was a bit poor, would not have been my choice to end. Nevertheless absolutely worth to watch.
Firefly Lane (2021)
Booringly slow story
Still just minutes to go I could not complete the first episode. It is so terribly booooooooooring!! I love Katherine Heigl a lot and Sarah Chalke also is a good quality actor but the story is not my cup of tea or it is just bad scripting but I have to let this series pass. So despite all the other reviews which rate this as 10/10 which I regard totally over the top, even if the script would be perfect, I which any other new viewer better luck but for me watching it would be a waste of time.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Absolutely superb
Ah, forget about all the negative blasphemy-tending reviews of not-so-Trekkie-after-all watchers, it is TOTALLY Star Trek and perhaps I liked it in a different way as I liked Next Generation, Voyager or Enterprise and the mini show Picard, these came also in other times of my life - which most likely affected the viewing experience. But it still SURE IS 100% Star Trek and totally felt like it when I watched. Cast was absolutely superb! And with an amazing seasons finale, and most likely, series finale, Discovery is one not to be missed. Here you go with my 10 out of 10 for all the good work and great adventures in space and time!
Equinox (2020)
Would not have seen it when I knew the quirks
At first it was rather slowish but still pretty amazing and promising with good strong Skandinavian atmosphere, which I like a lot. But the futher in the show I came the more edgy the story became, leaving me with more and more questions that were never resolved. The story, especially in the last episode (of seaon 1) takes many side roads and at some point I could hardly handle it and too many questions were finally left unanswered to give this a 6+ evaluation. Which is very sorry because of the great acting by the main characters. Actually for a story to be proper there should be no loose ends at all of course. And like others suggested to first read yourself into the mythology in order to get it .... sorry, I do not buy that, any story that was put into a movie or series should be watchable as is without any study of particular information prior to watching.
Serenity (2019)
9/10 but 10 stars for compensation
Serenity is movie with a very exceptional plot and that might have to do why a lot of viewers underrated it, but that is totally unfair because no part of this movie deserves a rating below 6. I can a little imagine that the "twist" in this movie might not be digestible to everyone, but it sure gave me a pleasant and elevating feeling. As far as the rest, the story was great, the casting absolutely fantastic (the combination Matthew McConnaughey and Anne Hathaway worked out really well again!) and the music was outstanding too. Everything was made well and with great care, so my verdict would be 9 out of 10 with the extra protest star on top!
May there be many more movies like this to come! Enjoy watching it if you are still about to!
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Beatifully made
There is nothing wrong with this movie except some small but also very obvious details that were disturbing.
It deserves way more then 6-minus stars despite a few things that do not run that smooth.
And it has some surprising elements that will make it to settle in a bit more deeper that average films.
It's category would be more like Interstellar / Away / Gravity so the more realistic bunch of space exploration movies with a significant bit of real-life-down-to-earth elements rather then SF. Which I like a lot.
Its story has a beatiful rhythm that pulls you in slowly and keep you interested all along.
Together with a great cast and the element of surprise I think it is definitely A class, I would say with a score betweeen 7 and 8 stars.
I can imagine because the story is a bit unconventional and there might be a tiny lack of cohesion between the various sceneries that a lot of people do not like it but that is mo reason to vote it into the ground.
Careful What You Wish For (2015)
Not clear for who this movie was made for
If it would not be the dropdead gorgeous Isabel Lucas that was shining on the screen during this mediocre movie I would have turned it off way before half an hour watching time. And in the meantime my review is still too short but this the only reason. The story is way too thin.
Cougar Hunting (2011)
It is that stupid that watching it becomes funny again
But you can only see and judge this through the glasses of a male teenager, of be one. ;)
I had a few laughs here and there but do not expect any impressing story. And yeah, there is a significant chance you might regret watching it.
Just this kind of movies has to be here too, in my youth I would watch this after a night out that was a bit alcoholic and lonely and definitely needed a cheer-up.
Chesapeake Shores (2016)
Mediocre soap and terribly overrated
I started watching this show based on the fairly IMDb rating and this is the first time for me that I experienced a huge disappointment following the rating based on a significant number of votes.
I watched it till the first part of S01E04 but then I had to give up. It is clearly not A-quality, by no means!
So I can imagine if you like this kind of shows within this category and you are taking part of the target audience you could tend to rate this higher than an average viewer, but based on the shear quality a current 7.6 out of 10 rating is illogical. On top of that is the majority of 10-voters which makes no sense at all.
Story 3 - Screenplay 4 - Casting 5 - Music and sound 6 - Direction, camera and light 6.
Other than that, the story is dreadful and almost totally predictable, which makes you think who exactly would give this a 10.
When Heroes Fly (2018)
Super overrated at the moment with a 7+ rating
This cannot be right. I was only able to watch just half of the first episode when I had to turn it off. It just kep on and on with irrelivant scenes and dialogs and a course of the plot was still nowhere to be found. Together with the dreadful acting and screenplay I do not trust this rating for a tiny bit and suspect a biased audience this time, sorry. This has nothing to do with the origin of this movie and that I do not understand Ivrit, I kind of regard it as an advantage to see something in a language that I completely do not understand.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
One of Netflix's all time masterpieces
It is delightful to finally watch something that is almost made out of pure gold again, without any violence or harm, just story and atmosphere. If you want something to watch that will drag you out of time and space while still being part of a particular time in history, filled with all the details you can think of, while forgetting it is almost only about one subject, this is it. Anothor wonderful aspect of this mini series was that it totally did not feel like it being a series at all and more felt like a really long movie with no doubt full-on cinema qualities throughout. Spectacular cast, historic details, music... bravo!
Doctor Foster (2015)
What a beautiful light drama!
First of all, I do not understand a tiny bit of a lot of the extremely and out of proportion negative reviews here, while this is such a masterpiece. The characters are so strong and realistic, but just that tiny and very tasteful bit over the top. Together with the pleasant and even story tension all the way and extremely good casting this watching this is a delight. Season 2 is a perfect follow up with some supprising twists in the story and includes lots of clarifications as well and is a definitely nice match to the first seaon. If I would produce a series like this, this s how I would want it to become, so my 9 stars well deserved.
Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013)
Would have expected a bit more from the title
There is too much negativity, especially in the end, around the question why some of the talents in the documentary did not become more successful. This rather sour taste becomes a bit too profound in the end, spoiling the pleasure of watching the rest previous part of it. Other than that great talents singing great music! Although it would be more joyful to see a larger variety of artists. I notice a slight tendency in myself of getting bored with the circle of documented people. That could have to do with the negative aspect. I would like to see more documentaries like this, because the subject is interesting enough.
