Road House (2024)
Starts off really well. Then becomes a different movie
This film really confused me. It had so much potential to be a really great action/redemption story.
The first chunk of this film had me really invested. We met our protagonist in a dark place, contemplating suicide and living with a regretful past. Who was just trying to do better, trying to seek redemption. Gyllenhaal was fantastic as always, you could tell he made a real effort for this movie. The supporting cast were (mostly) good too. You really felt like the local community were banding together. And I had a general sense of where this film would go and end in a satisfying way.
Then it suddenly becomes an entirely different film, with little to no plot and silly comedic action sequences that lead nowhere. With Connor McGregor playing the part of an apparent violence loving lunatic straight out of the show "Vikings".
The redemption arc disappears entirely and Gyllenhaal kills multiple people with no affect on him at all! Seeing as this was what the whole first part of the film was about - him dealing with the guilt of killing someone in his past. This just thew me straight out of the film.
And yes, I do realise that this film is a loose remake of the 1989 original where a similar thing happens. But atleast in that film Doltans actions have some weight to them. He regrets what he's done. In this he just starts killing and is smiling whilst doing it!?
The final 40mins just feel like an entirely separate film where the director had zero control over what was happening. Either through studio interference or McGregors PR team demanding over the top action scenes and screen time for the UFC celebrity.
I Couldn't help but feel disappointed with the lost potential and "what could've been" story for this movie. Shame.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
The modern audience is too negative
Just finished watching the film after reading so so many negative reviews about it over the past week. I went into this already feeling disappointed. But I've learnt a valuable lesson today - the audiences in this day and age are so hard to please, even if the original Jurassic park were to come out today people would probably give that negative reviews too.
Don't believe what you read from the masses. I thought this film was excellent and was a great send off for the "world" trilogy. It gave me goosebumps, it made me feel wonder, sadness, surprise and fear. Sound familiar?? Another film does that too. It's called Jurassic Park.
I'm by no means saying this film is as good as the original. But it is MILES better than Fallen Kingdom and I actually think this film merged the original cast with the recent very well. Both groups were integral to the plot and actually contributed. They used their nightmare experience from the first film and used it to survive.
I could go on and write another 1000 words to this review challenging people who say "there wasn't enough dinosaurs. Too much focus on people" and to that I say - if that's what you want then go watch the walking with dinosaurs movie.. this isn't a Dino documentary. It's a science fiction film which involved HUMANS creating dinosaurs from DNA. People and their selfish motivations are kind of important to how the entire series has worked thus far.
If you're reading this review and haven't seen the film because you've been put off by all the negativity - then please, go and see the film and judge for yourself. Don't be the negativesaurus that so many seem to be these days.
And yes, I did just say Negativesaurus. I'm using it now.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Don't really understand the hype to be honest
Don't get me wrong, from a visual and colourfully fantastical point of view, this film was amazing.
But for an MCU film, which we have all come to love for being so intricate and detailed, this film falls flat for me. It just doesn't make any sense with the universe that the MCU has built up to this point.
Certain rules and historic lore has been completely discarded. And I think the villain of this movie is one of the worst and least relatable of the entire franchise. It just made no sense. And even during the climactic "battle" things were happening that just weren't explained. We just kind of had to accept what we were seeing as possible without understanding what was happening.
And unfortunately the character depth of most of the cast in this film was very poor. Certain characters were sort of just there for the sake of it. With no real purpose or direction, and they were some of the closest characters to the main guy!
I don't often say this - infanct I've only said it once before when leaving the cinema after a marvel film, I feel disappointed, confused and left thinking "they could've done it better"
Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)
Seriously, not as bad as everyone says!
Don't jump on the bandwagon that some harsh critics started. This game is actually very good! It's only real flaw is that it had to follow one of the greatest trilogies ever. Yes, people wanted insane graphics and they wanted mind blowing gameplay, but realistically, how likely was it that this game was going to be everything that everyone wanted it to be??
I played through this game after completing the first three and I really enjoyed it. I loved the sense of being in an unknown galaxy, where nothing is known and everything is being experienced for the first time.
Yes, there are some flaws with graphics (in very few places if at all now that BioWare have patched them). And the lack of alien species encountered in this new galaxy can be a bit frustrating. But overall I thought this was a brilliant game, and a very good follow up to the original trilogy with a very good storyline and characters that have serious potential if this new series of games is allowed to unfold without everyone hating on it.
I encourage you, ignore the original hate, start playing with an open mind and you will honestly enjoy this game for what it has to offer!
