Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Disappointed, but waiting for the next...
I went to the theatre really excited for this movie, although the trailer didn't really hype me.
But I really loved the last 3 instalments and I was looking forward to it.
To my disappointment, it was not even close to being as good as Fallout was.
Many scenes felt like scenes randomly put together.
Acting was subpar, only Simon Pegg nailed it again. Mediocre performances by Vanessa Kirby, Hailey Atwell and Cruise himself.
The two guys that hunt Ethan don't feel a threat, Gabriel himself is cool but also doesn't feel like a big threat, Paris is underused, could have been a menace.
They kill off Ilsa to replace her with Grace just before the final instalment? Ilsa was one of the best characters in the last movies and she barely gets to speak in this one.
Also, as many have said, where was the mission impossible, where were the plot twists, where was the excitement?
The movie has great production values, great filming locations, but it feels more like an excuse for Tom Cruise to show off his stunts...
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Lack of focus...
This movie (a franchise now) has an identity issue. Bearing the name "Holmes" it should focus on crime and mystery solving, above everything else.
However, here we have one part teen adventure, one part social justice manifesto, one part action movie, one part romance and some low level mystery solving.
I don't know why, but Brown's acting feels insufferable at times and while Cavill is good, he doesn't really feel like a believable Sherlock. His action credits are just too many...
Although I have a problem with the gender/race changing of established characters, it is something that I am getting used to... But Mira Troy?? Seriously? A child could deduce Moriarty out of it! I could also tell that Cecily was Sarah all along. The only Sherlock worthy mystery was the map with the accounts.
Overall a fun watch, but with many flaws...
Oameni de treaba (2022)
The ending ruined it for me...
I walked into this movie expecting almost nothing, not sure that I'd even make it to the end.
However, the plot managed to hold me and the protagonist did a really good job in portraying a loser-miserable-not that clever police officer in a village where the mayor and the priest do their dirty business.
I can't say that I was hooked, but I didn't get bored either.
But once again a Tarantinesque ending ruined it for me, like it did in Parasites. There was no need for such a ridiculous massacre in the end. The movie had taken a dramatic turn, Ilie took the most important decision of his life and decided to put his consciousness first and his dream of an orchard and a peaceful life second. Then the movie turned into pure comedy or should I say spoof. The shoutout was hilarious but in a stupid way and it just felt out of place for me.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Doesn't meet the hype yet...
For me, the series main issue is the miscast of major characters like Elrond and Galadriel. I am sure both actors are great but Robert Aramayo doesn't have the imposing presence of Hugo Weavin and Morfydd Clark fails to deliver a convincing Galadriel. If the movies didn't exist, this wouldn't be an issue, but since they do, both actors lack in comparison to their predecessors.
Another issue for me, is that the Hobbit scenes break the immersion and pace so far. They are extremely childish and predictable.
The show isn't bad and it has all the elements to become better, but they have to bring up the pace.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
It works, it's good, but it could have been better...
Walking into this movie, I had two main concerns. First, if the previous two Spidermen are really in the movie and second if this multiverse thing will work.
To my surprise, both were done right! Tobey and Andrew are there in full action and you can't get enough of them. The multiverse also works in a believable and as logical as possible way.
The problems that bothered me the most were the pacing, some of the acting and some immersion breaking funny scenes.
Starting with the pacing, the movie is too long and it drags at times. Of course there are a lot of things happening but I felt myself being bored at some scenes, while wishing others had been given more time. The first part is boring, things start to get better when Dr. Strange casts the spell, then another big boring part with Peter tries to catch and then to redeem all the bad guys and the movie gets a lot better after May's death.
I found the scenes between Holland, Zendaya and Batalon being way too many and immersion breaking. Like "ok lets stop the movie for a minute to say the same things we said 10 minutes ago about friendship, morality etc"... Ok we got it, it's all about friendship... I don't know if Zendaya is a good actress or not, but I feel she was a bit wooden in this one. And Batalon is limited to comic relief.
Holland is great though and so is Cumberbatch.
About the bad guys, we get a solid performance from Dafoe and Molina, especially Dafoe, but Jamie Fox feels different from his character in the respective film. Honestly, he feels more like MF Jones from Horrible Bosses, rather than Max Dillon.
Also, I cant believe that before the great final battle, the 3 Spidermen are casualy chatting about their enemies and that the director thought that a scene where one Spiderman is stretching the other's back is necessary.
The final battle great and all, but at times it was hard to distinguish the Spidermen and it was a little bit too chaotic for my taste.
The humour is there in big amounts and in wrong places. For example, when Andrew's Spidey appears, it is ok to have the funny moment where MJ and Ned test him, it is funny when Ned's grandma asks him to wipe the spider from the ceiling, but it is not funny when the grandma starts talking in her language for 30 seconds straight.
I undesrstand that these movies are mostly for teen and young audiences, but I feel that even them werent impressed with all these shifts between light and dark tone.
The Boys (2019)
Good series, but the violence is disturbing...
The series is good overall. It has interesting characters and it's a fresh take on the superhero genre.
Karl Urban and Anthony Starr especially do a great job with their characters.
However, the violence is very graphic and disturbing in most cases. At times it was too much for me. Another thing is that some story subplots, like Deep's story feel a little immerse breaking and drag too long.
No Time to Die (2021)
The worst Craig Bond film...
The problem with this movie is that it is not a true Bond film. To be fair, it is only for the first hour or so. In fact, the action scenes in Italy and Cuba are pretty good. What happens from Bond's visit to Blofeld and on is not...
From that point and on the movie goes downhill...
It is needlessly too long, it drags and Safin's plan is super convoluted to keep up with...
I also question the director's ability to use the actors. Craig's acting felt out of place many times, in fact I thought he was more like Benoit Blanc from Knives Out and less like Bond.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Thank you!!
I'm still in tears, thank you David Filoni and Jon Favreau!
The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
Wow!!!
Best episode ever!! Epic is not enough to describe it!
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Not as good as Hill House, still a very good drama thriller...
Those who rate this will less than a 5 or 6 are out of this world. Ratings below that suggest something bad, not something you didn't like or wasn't what you expected.
The series excels in many areas, atmosphere, music, direction, acting...
It is not horror, it is an atmospheric dramatic love story, about betrayal, loss and despair...
What I didn't like is that the story unfolds very slow and this can discourage many. The first four episodes could really be two. There are also some wtfs and plot holes in the process but it is a ghost story anyway... It is also not recommended for casual viewing, you kinda have to pay some attention to understand what is going on.
Knives Out (2019)
Poirot wannabe average crime drama
This one is trying so much to be a Hercule Poirot type of mystery. It is not that it is bad but it feels a little off at times. Craig's character jumps to conclusions easily, the members of the family are full of stereotypes, the plot twists are somehow predictable.
It is a good try, but if they want to make a franchise with Craig's character, they have to try more.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Don't listen to anyone...
Yeah this is violent... But it is Rambo we are talking about! It is what you expect from a Rambo movie. In my opinion, the Tarantino movies may have less violence as a whole but is more shocking and out of place.
The movie is entertaining, fast paced and that is all that mattered for me...
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
What??
So they have time for brothel jokes but no time to show, let's say, John getting captured??
Lame...
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Mainstream B movie...
If this was not named GOT, it would be a mediocre B movie... The series went downhill without Martin's writing...
Noone dies, heroes always escape death at the last second...
The battle also felt uninspiring and boring with all this dark mess and everything...
Searching (2018)
A surprisingly good thriller!
I was not sure of what to expect from the movie, I didn't even know that it was going to be presented as it was and at first I felt a little strange and I wasn't sure I liked it. But as the story kept unfolding, I loved it. I wouldn't change a single thing.
It would have worked even if this was shot normally, but in the end it is better that way.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
It could have been a solid 10...
In the first 6-7 episodes the series does a great job of building up the story, the tension and the mystery, with the 5th episode being particulalrlly heart breaking. Then it goes downhill and the last episodes feel like any other family drama, the tension goes down and the dialogues-monologues become repetitive and boring.
A missed chance to do something really great.
The Haunting of Hill House: The Bent-Neck Lady (2018)
Horror Making Seminar
The last 10 minutes of the episode are the finest piece of horror I have seen for quite a while. Its actually the mix of horror and drama that make you care and feel for the characters.
A tear dropped when I realised that the scene with Nell dancing in the house was the the same scene from a previous episode that I had said 'oh look it's just a ghost in the house'...
Absolutely epic and sentimental ending to conclude Nell's arc.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
A nice movie but way too predictable...
It is a fine instalment to the series but I could predict all the mask tricks and plot twists... They were way too obvious for fans of the series...
The Walking Dead: Welcome to the Tombs (2013)
Wanted more...
It was a nice episode overall and I can't understand those who wanted to see the Governor dying... I mean, it was a season finale, but obviously they have to keep you waiting for the next one... If the Governor died, I think that numerous fans would lose their anticipation for next season...
It was nice to see the Governor finally throwing his "good leader" mask and even better to see Rick getting over his ilussions and remembering his bright side again... I found the way Andrea died a little unrealistic, as I feel that she could kill Milton since she got free... I also didn't like that Shumpert and Martinez joined the Governor... Two episodes ago, when Martinez was talking with Daryl, I thought that he had some good in him...
