The Wire (2002)
This is one of those shows that isn't just a show-it's an experience
Let me start out by saying that The Wire is probably my favorite television drama of all time (if not 2nd to BB). The only adjective that I can think of that really does it justice when describing it, is "superb". The writing is superb. The character development is superb. The CHARACTERS, my god the characters, are superb. The setting and cinematography are superb. It's attention to detail is what sets it apart from your average show, and after you see just one episode you will automatically know what I mean when I say "it's attention to detail". Every hour installment leaves you with so much to reflect on and so much to look forward to. It's authentic, it's realistic, it's gripping. David Simon and company did this series right and successfully made a TV show feel like a major life experience after you've finished watching it. Now at first that statement sounds extreme, but trust me, once you finish the finale it won't seem like a such a crazy thing to think. In conclusion, I obviously highly recommend The Wire... you will not be disappointed!
Fruitvale Station (2013)
All aboard for Fruitvale: Solid portrayal of the Oscar Grant story
After hearing about it's praise at Sundance and viewing the trailer, Fruitvale Station soon became one of the most anticipated 2013 titles for me on my Watchlist. I was also pretty excited to see that Michael B. Jordan, whom I loved on The Wire, took on the lead role of Grant. Where's Wallace?! Here's Wallace!
Well I finally saw Fruitvale today, and I am glad to say it pretty much lives up to the hype. Jordan's performance as a struggling young father from Cali is damn believable. It is a lower budget film directed by not-that-experienced writer/director Ryan Coogler, but in this case I think both of those factors end up giving it more heart and realism, and that's hard to come by these days.
In conclusion, this movie deserves your time and money. Instead of focusing ALL of it's energy on the tragic events of New Year's Day morning, 2009, it provides us with a realistic view into a day in the life of a 22-year old man named Oscar Grant.
Hit and Run (2012)
Not so bad!
I went into Hit and Run expecting fun, nothing more, and that's what I got! If you want to have a good time, go in with low expectations. The comedy is not laugh out loud and the love story is pretty predictable/flat. What makes this film worth watching is the adventure that Yul "Charlie Bronson" Perkins (Dax Shepard) and his girlfriend Annie (Kristen Bell) find themselves in. Yul's troubled past, which Annie is not fully aware of, brings villain Alex (Bradley Cooper
with dreadlocks!) into the picture and that's right, folks, we have ourselves a chase! A satisfyingly diverse soundtrack increases the quality of the action scenes and packs them with a little more punch. I think it could have used a little more organization and flow but it's not a terrible effort by sophomore directors Shepard and Palmer. While it has a lot of run, it also has just enough HIT to keep you interested.
Boardwalk Empire: Two Impostors (2012)
Wow. What an episode!
All I can say is wow. Wow, wow, wow. This has to be my favorite episode of season 3, and maybe even the whole series thus far. It is exciting from start to finish. I did not think they could have topped the last episode which ended with that incredible "4am delivery" scene, but "Two Imposters" packs a punch. A Margaret-less Nucky barely fights off Gyp's army in his own Ritz hotel suite and then fortunately finds shelter, albeit temporary, at Chalky White headquarters. His survival is made complicated by his trusted assistant Eddie's gunshot wound, but thank god for sharp, intelligent only-a-medical-student "Master" Samuel. A few standoffs later, Nucky is driven to a different location, which is surprisingly still in Atlantic City. He explains it is his town and he's not going anywhere. Finally, Al Capone and friends arrive so 'Nuck and Al can get some chow and discuss "who's going to die". All of this great writing is paralleled with another compelling side story: the newly in love Richard Harrow plots to rescue Tommy from Gillian and her gangster filled whorehouse. Bobby Cannavale (Gyp) has given tremendous intensity and light to this season and made the Gyp-Nucky rivalry so worth watching. The writers have set us up for one hell of a finale with this ep-I cannot wait!
