Mrs Wilson (2018)
Incredible real-life story, gripping acting
What a drama! I have a soft spot for series and movies that are based on true events, but this was shockingly good.
First of all, the plot is rich with lots of flashbacks and changes in the point of view. Secondly, the acting of Ruth Wilson is superb (as always). However, I honestly thought she has outdone herself this time. Perhaps, the fact that she played her own grandmother (crazy, right?!) led to her deep investment in this role. Last but not least, Mrs Wilson at no point fails to address issues such as infidelity, faith, truth and forgiveness in a very discreet and philosophical way.
All in all, it is an unforgettable tale, one of those that stay with you long after the viewing.
Keteke (2017)
A charming tale
What I liked most about this film is the smile it puts on your face. Despite the difficulties they encounter, the couple manages to find the strength to go on, always relying on each other. Not to mention that the fighting and making-up seems relatable, while the locale and their situation make the story very unique at the same time.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Almost two hours of meaningless drama
And I say almost because the ending is unexpectedly good and what saved this movie from complete failure! That being said, the viewers go through hell and high water until they get there, though.
Let me start by saying I watched this movie out of curiosity after reading some very promising reviews and hoping that Adam Sandler will finally give us a performance to remember.
Unfortunately, I was bitterly disappointed. The constant screaming and nagging and running around of the movie left me confused at best.
In addition to the unnecessarily at times frenetic rhythm, there are these caricatures of clichéd characters. Honestly, the most interesting ones to me was the minimalist duo of Arno and Phil, in contrast to that of Sandler who only manages to give an over-the-top performance.
All in all and to save you some trouble, skip most of the middle part and go right to the end sequence. Believe me, you will miss nothing of importance.
The Witcher (2019)
The only fantasy series worth watching right now
I think after GOT this is the way to go for fans of fantasy. First of, it features a wide and culturally rich universe well presented through the lore, a strong lead character embodied down to every detail by a well prepared actor (Henry Cavill admittedly did a great job here with the grunting as well as the the movements), and the story builds up nicely by interweaving plots and timelines - although I did expect sth more of a climactic moment during the last episode. Last but not least, the effects are quite impressive. Overall, the production has paid attention to detail and it shows. As a fan of Skyrim and the Witcher video game, I appreciate the general feeling and aesthetics of the series.
Turn Up Charlie (2019)
As lighthearted as it gets
This is indeed a very lighthearted, enjoyable show. But, that's that I'm afraid. Yes, you'll probably binge-watch the whole season and it will put a smile on your face but, in the end, you'll find that sth is missing. In other words, the show does a good job of drawing you in but it leaves you unfulfilled. And, it's a shame because the actors' performances are rather good, especially that of Frankie Hervey who is truly a revelation. I guess, in the end, it falls short beacause of the cliché themes left unexplored a bit further.
