Hot Garbage
22 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
40 years after the original, a group of 20 something yuppies buy a ghost town with two residents remaining, yup leather face and his mum.

I'm not entirely sure how old leather face was supposed to be in the original, but he has to be 60+ years old by now. Keep that in mind.

Predictably, mum dies and LF goes on his wild murderous rampage. Despite being shot at point blank range with a 12 caliber shotgun at least 4 times, stabbed, and after taking his own chainsaw (the worlds best chainsaw mind you that basically started right up after sitting in a wall for decades) to the face, LF endures...because he's basically Michael Myers at this point.

Bad script, bad acting (even by horror movie standards) and a lame attempt to inject humor at the expense of "wokism" left this movie a complete disaster. Skip it.

Seriously?

How can anybody give this 10 stars? I don't know how anybody can give this anything above 1. Quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

Terrible story, terrible acting, terrible music. Just terrible. Avoid at all costs.

What movie is everybody else watching?

This film was excruciating to watch. Every scene is dragged out 10 times longer than it needs to be. The acting by Azura Skye is fine, but the rest of the ensemble is forgettable. Expecting more from a 6.7 rating, was disappointed.

Decent enough, but stops short

Good premise, good acting. Good storyline. But needed a little bit more. Once I realized I was hooked, it was over.

Just meh

Casting was great, story was just okay.

There was a fine build up that just didn't deliver. HOHH was exceptional for me. This wasn't.

Hang in there

A lot of reviewers got bogged down in the 3rd/4th episodes. This season could have been 5 or 6 episodes, sure. In some ways the attempted character development falls flat, and despite her top billing, Ellen Page portrays one of the least memorable characters. Robert Sheehan deserves an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Klaus, as does Aiden Gallagher (Number 5) and the scene stealer of the show is Cameron Britton (Hazel). The rest of the ensemble are regrettably bland and mundane. However, the show has a lot of good things going for it. The soundtrack is outstanding. The action/fighting scenes are on point, and the plot is interesting enough to keep me watching. The biggest critique I have is that this show floats between genres too loosely...gut wrenching scenes of characters experiencing loss followed Immediately by kitschy, Tarantino/Guy Ritchie type action scenes predicated on audience laughter. Overall, more hits than misses, and I'll be watching Season 2.

Unrealized potential
31 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had "good bones" to make it's mark, but unfortunately fell short. Seyfried was excellent in the starring role, but nobody else was cast in a supporting role that was even memorable. The talented Jennifer Carpenter barely got 5 minutes of screen time despite her 2nd billing. Normally with these types of thrillers, there is some sort of plot twist at the end, but with this one, it kind of just fizzles out. I usually like trying to look for clues to figure out who the killer is hiding in plain sight, but with this movie a plethora of red herrings are introduced and nothing is ever flushed out. In the end, the killer/kidnapper gets his initial screen time 30 seconds before he dies. A nameless/faceless Joe Schmo. 5/10 for Seyfried's acting and the score which I admit kept me engaged at the end of the movie. It's a shame that they didn't flush out the other possibilities that existed here.

Good, could have been great.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie has me split. The acting was incredible... The three main characters and the daughters. The plot was also on point. It wasn't overly dramatized. It felt real, as haunting as it is. I'm not a fan of 3 hour movies, but I felt this should have been one. At 2 hours and change, it felt even a little rushed for me. It could have used 20 minutes more before Sam arrives back home to drive home the relationship and 40 minutes more after to delve deeper into the PTSD. More interaction with Tommy and Sam after Dam's homecoming could have helped also. It might have been perfect. The ending felt a little forced. The acting was amazing...this was perfectly cast.

Awful

What a waste. They took a subject that could have been covered in an hour and are going to spread it out over 6. The minutia of irrelevant crap in ep 1 was unbearable. Total miss by the usually reliable HBO.

Solid series
8 December 2019
I am a bit perplexed by the negative reviews, especially those that critique the acting which I thought was excellent. Others claim this series directly rips off other horror storylines, but i didn't find that to be the case either. Visual affects and score were on point as well.

I will say that it got slower than it probably needed to in the middle. It could have been shaved down to 7 or even 6 episodes and probably would not have lost much. However, at 45 min per ep, watching 8 didn't take that much of a time investment.

Taking another reviewer's advice, I switched to the original French and viewed with subtitles about 10 minutes into ep 1 and am glad I did. The English overdub wasn't doing it for me.

Solid viewing and I'll be watching season 2 if/when it is released.
