Napoléon (2002)
Well Done
This is an excellent mini series. Although it is 6 hours, it can't even begin to tell Napoleon's eventful life. The mini series tried to captured all the important points in Napoleon's life but can only spend so much time on each. From Napoleon's battles to love affairs, they were all represented beautifully. I didn't find any part of the series to be dry or rigid and the plot moved at a good pace separating each episode that corresponds to 3-4 years of Napoleon's life. The battle scenes (which is initially what drew me to this series), was nicely done. Not the Hollywood style high-def scenes but it conveys the message nicely. Although I have never seen this actor in any movies, his performance was flawless and greatly contributed to Napoleon's character. I definitely recommend this mini series to anyone who'd like to know Napoleon Bonaparte a little bit more.
Elizabeth I (2005)
Simply Excellent
Elizabeth I is just simply great. Very well written and nicely performed by Helen Mirren. Mirren did an excellent job portraying Elizabeth the Queen and this made the series even more interesting. Mirren ability to change mood almost instantaneously made every moment of the series more exciting. Another note for its success is the historical accuracy of the series. From the customes, to the stage and the events that actually took place - they all played a part in telling this story.
I would recommend this title to anyone who likes history or just likes a good drama.
View from the Top (2003)
Very Inspiring...
I have seen this movie three times and I love it every time. I'm not sure why so many people didn't like it. Perhaps it wasn't "blockbuster" enough for them. This movie moved me because it is very inspiring. If you want something bad enough and is willing to work hard for it, you will achieve it. It's not just another corny movie because it also illustrates the dilemma that we all encounter and choosing the right path is just as hard as achieving it. It also tried to spice up the movie by adding comedy into it - which is what I like. The musics throughout the movie compliments the mood of the movie very well. Kudos to Gwyneth!
17 sui de tian kong (2004)
Great Movie...
One of a few gay Asian movies out there today. It depicted a naive young Taiwanese gay man who ventured out to a very much open Taipei society in search of his true love only to encounter that lust rather than love was on the minds of most. Formula 17 also tried to approach this love story through a comedic style...with characters that were quite dramatic and over-reacting. In retrospect, I appreciate Formula 17 not only because it was a work of art, it was also an expression that many gay people out there could also relate with. Love have been lost and is seldom seen but the main character in this movie tried to bring it back for us to see and taste.
I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone...gay or straight.
Nicholas and Alexandra (1971)
Great Movie..great acting!
I have always been fascinated by Russia's last tsar and his family. I have literally read dozens of books as well as articles about them. This movie puts into perspective what I have known all along. I came across this movie (VHS form) over 10 years ago. I've read Robert K Massie's book and although the movie can never be as concise as a book, it skillfully captures the mood and developed the plot really well as the movie progresses. The casting also deserved a big applause. Jayston and Suzman did a wonderful job portraying the real tsar and tsarista. The only thing I guess (and it is not fault of theirs) is perhaps better sounds and graphics. I had to turn up my volume really high to hear what they are saying especially if the actors speak softly as demanded by the mood of that scene. Oh well..it's the early 70's..what can we expect. Great movie...i would recommend it to everyone.
