Supernatural: What Is and What Should Never Be (2007)
I went to rate this episode just to find out I rated it a 10 many years ago
I think that says all. Supernatural has always had its ups and downs but the one think prevailing is the two brothers and their family drama. Sam and Dean will always be the center of the show, hunting monsters, jinns, spirits, and whatever else evil creatures they could get their hands on.
It's been the prime theme of the show since the beginning. And part of it has always been the tragedy of the brothers and their family.
This episode starts off with a gut punch right away. Happy gamily. Mom alive. Both living a normal life. And the sad part is that from the get go you know something is off. Knowing however tragic their character arcs are, it makes them who they are. And that alone might be the most tragic thing, period.
This episode has me emotional every single time and always will. It perfectly plays on the strengths of the show while doing something completely different and I don't think I've ever seen another episode of any show pull off something like this.
Masterpiece. Period.
The Terror (2018)
The first season is some of the most thrilling, horrifying, breathtaking spectacle I've seen on TV
The writing, the acting, the overwhelming sense of dread, despair, hopelessness. The constant feel of danger and threat even though nothing is happening and the few crumbs the show drops every so often, leading you to your own resolutions and realizations. The show is still flawed. The later episodes struggle to hold up to the high standards the other episodes have set up and - depending on your expectations - the ending might leave you disappointed. But I can without a doubt say that the journey is worth it regardless. I have watched this shows 3 years ago and still think about it to this day. Which is great. But I'd also like to forget about it for some time to rewatch it again with at least some of the sense of wonder it left me with during the first watch.
Banshee: Tribal (2015)
Love to hate it/hate to love it
God damn it. The show really keeps on showing that plot armor can be taken any second...
Unexpected turns. Impactful episode for the entire show but I hope it will be worth it for the plot and character development - not just for demonizing the already established antagonists any more.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
The trailers had me scared, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one
A perfectly fine and fun summer blockbuster. Looks and sounds great, good performances, some unexpected emotion. Just don't take it too serious and enjoy.
Brightburn (2019)
"Tell, don't show" done the wrong way
Brightburn has an interesting premise, but as far as the concept of the movie goes, that's it.
There are 2 or 3 short moments in which you can see the potential this had.
Otherwise it's a really flat, predictable and lazy movie. The credit-scenes had more world and character building than the entire movie.
Overall: it's enjoyable but given its fresh idea, overall a letdown in poor execution.
Yasuke (2021)
Massive bait and switch by Netflix
Netflix made sure to inform everbody that Grammy Award Winning producer Flying Lotus executive produced this series, and provided its entire OST.
Yet when the show released it took minutes to realize something is wrong.
Some of the shots, including stills, look beautiful, yet the animations are stiff and lifeless The english voice acting is not very enjoyable, gladly I could switch to German which is better in my opinion.
The trailers painted this as a grand epic with incredible Lo Fi beats, akin to cult classic Afro Samurai, great action and an interesting supernatural touch.
But the series itself goes nowhere. Episodes end at random, the pacing is not great and the production quality is all over the place.
I wanted to make this review to call Netflix out on this.
They went out of their way to advertise this with the FlyLo OST. Yet the trailer music isn't even in the series, nor on the album. They put all of the best action and shots in the trailers.
I expected to at least get some enjoyment from anime fights with a good soundtrack from this, sadly it doesn't provide anything of the above.
Stay clear of Yasuke. Just play the album on Spotify and watch something worth your time.
Hunter Killer (2018)
Very original story with great visuals but flat characters
Uninteresting characters with just a few exceptions don't help this movie. The visuals are great. The story is refreshingly original and not what I expected going into this. Overall a nice film to watch for popcorn entertainment. It's not perfect but fun and different enough to be worth a watch. Still I have already forgotten the name of every single character 5mins after watching it, and I think that sums it up perfectly.
Paranormal (2020)
A brilliant premiere season with its ups and downs
From the very first second I was fascinated by the atmosphere this shows builds.
While I felt a drop off after the initial episode and feared the show would go downhill, I stuck around for the entire season and I am glad I did.
The soundtrack is beautifully chilling and the visuals are truly stunning. Add the cast of likeable and natural characters (which may be a bit cliché) and you get this surprise of a great paranormal show.
It really is more than the sum of its parts and in the end I was thrilled and enchanted by this world.
Please Netflix. Don't axe this one.
