Le monde selon Monsanto (2008)
Google should get credited as an author
I was eventually able to ignore the long scenes of Robin on her iMac browsing Google for all the world's truth and pay attention to her interviewees.
I expected this documentary to have me grousing about hippies and giving up on it, but after the first third, it got better and had some interviewees who made really persuasive points, such as Monsanto's smear campaign against critical scientists, the contamination of non-GM crops in Mexico, and the socio-economic consequences of Monsanto's control of seed supplies and multinational agribusiness in general. I was interested in the science, but the documentary didn't cover the science nearly as well as it covered the suppression of scientific criticism and information by Monsanto (and its lawyers) and the FDA/US government -- not in a conspiratorial way, but with traditional political and economic motivations devoid of concern for consequences or democracy.
If nothing else, it's worth noting that many of the people -- from scientists to farmers -- didn't distinguish between Monsanto and "the Americans", so we're being held responsible for whatever it is Monsanto is up to.
Needed more concise arguments and less Google.
The Tripper (2006)
Not the most awesomely bad awesomely-bad-movie I've ever seen, but pretty awesomely bad -- just keep a hostile mind.
This is a perfect film for a Saturday night with a bunch of people hanging out looking for something that won't be too hard to follow or enjoy. I think next time I'm gonna triple-feature it with Bad Taste and Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter.
It's got a lot of really bad special and makeup effects, overwrought performances, heavy handed social political and philosophical messages right along side inspired meaningless-crap dialog, and a fairly endless stream of celebrities and recognizable up-and-comings in roles you hope won't be held against them.
Did this ever have a theatrical release? Or direct to video? Seriously, is this available anywhere but bit torrent?
Nice camera work tho.
Waiting... (2005)
Holy Hell That Was Good!!!
That was on par with 40 Year Old Virgin for making myself injure myself laughing; I actually liked it a little better. I don't understand why this didn't get a similar amount of press.
Oh, it's not Shakespeare and it's not The English Patient. Sure, if you're worried about what's in your food because you're a ***** to your waiter, you're not going to enjoy this film. If you don't understand why people think Clerks (and this beats Clerks hands down) is funny, then you may be too uptight to enjoy this. It's very similar Gen-X Exaggerated-Reality-Slice-of-Life crass style, but in full glorious color.
The Avengers (1998)
Stupid, but in a good way.
I think people who couldn't stand this movie expected either James Bond or Austin Powers. Just like the delightfully stupid TV series (killer plant from space?!?), this movie is an often-witty tongue-in-cheek gentleman-spy (gentleman, not shag master, even if campy) adventure -- everyone has charming and polite conversations over tea or combat. Steed's smugness is entertaining, instead of oily like 007. Despite both having scenes in steamy bathhouses, The Avengers doesn't go for Austin Powers' fart-joke market.
This isn't the greatest movie ever, no, but bottom 100? Anyone who doesn't need their entertainment delivered with a sledge-hammer ought to at least rent it.
