Femme (2023)
A good film but missed a chance to be more
I went into this film knowing nothing more than the synopsis (I had expected George Mackay to be playing the protagonist actually, so evidently I hadn't read very much about it). It was enjoyable to an extent but I was left feeling somewhat disappointed because I don't feel it particularly explored the two main characters in sufficient depth. The audience is privy to some of the journey Preston goes on, but there was so much more that could've been explored with his character. Nonetheless Mackay's performance was excellent. There is not a great deal of growth and development with Jules, he starts a drag queen and he ends a drag queen. At least with Preston the layers were starting to peel back and I developed some sympathy for him. Overall I would say a decent story that should've been taken further, there was a nice redemption arc in there somewhere for Preston. With regards to calling this a 'thriller', I wouldn't say I was especially thrilled by it and at several points I was just asking myself "why are they doing that, this doesn't make sense". I'm rating it a 6/10 but that is mainly down to Mackay's performance. I really wish I'd been given more background to the complicated feelings he has around his sexuality and his internal conflict.
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
Getting progressively worse
I thought the first film was very good; a top notch cast and a timeless story. The second film still had a good plot to rely on, and some good actors (plus Gal Gadot). This time around, the story didn't particularly interest me and I had already reached the conclusion of who the murderer was, without feeling particularly clever for working it out before the big reveal. Too many jump scares and trying a little bit too hard to be a horror movie rather than a murder mystery. There are some enjoyable aspects of the film but overall it was very mediocre. I wouldn't say it was a bad film per se, but not good. I wouldn't pay to see it in the cinema again but it would be alright to watch on streaming on a lazy day.
Senior Year (2022)
Does what it says on the tin
I wasn't expecting a classic with world class acting and an outstanding script. Good enough to put on on a lazy Saturday afternoon, and the fact I didn't switch off literally or metaphorically merits a 7/10 rating. Just enjoy it for what it is!
White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch (2022)
Yawn
At first glance I thought it might be an interesting documentary, Netflix has put out some excellent stuff recently (Boeing, Savile, Afghanistan). I quickly realised it was just a lot of people complaining about attractive white people. Boo hoo.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Sufficiently entertaining but too many flaws to merit a higher rating
Positives:
- Kenneth Branagh
- Emma Mackey
- The mystery kept me guessing until the big reveal at the end
- Gal Gadot got killed off so I didn't have to sit through more of her 'acting'
Negatives:
- Gal Gadot
- Armie Hammer getting raunchy and having his hands all over the ladies, far too triggering
- Gal Gadot
- I can let them off for not filming on location but the CGI backdrops of Egypt looked obviously fake
- Gal Gadot
- Some of the characters were unlikeable (e.g. Gal Gadot)
- Anachronistic electric guitar
- Gal Gadot.
Attack of the Hollywood Clichés! (2021)
Too woke
It was passable until it turned into a lecture on 'racism'. Had to switch it off before I lost anymore IQ points.
