War of the Worlds (2019)
Interstellar and The Road love child
I absolutely love this series so I had to see where the hate was coming from. The science was actually weaved into the story in a compelling way and the characters are more human than the over emotive cast you get with most shows these days. To me if feels like this is what you would get if Interstellar and The Road had a baby. I was hooked from the very beginning with this show, so those that aren't probably shouldn't force themselves to get through more episodes. Many negative reviews complained about it being slow but I didn't find this at all, so you can probably gauge if you will like this from the first episode or two. I think some of the interesting developments in the plot come in the form of scientists figuring out what's going on. I could see people finding that boring if they just want to see killer robots and aliens. If you're into some interesting scientific commentary and an exploration of the psychology of dealing with the genocide of humanity then this is worth checking out.
Star Trek: Discovery: Saints of Imperfection (2019)
Not sure i would want to be crew on this ship this episode
I have to admit I was going along enjoying this show but this episode had some serious flaws to me.
Let's risk the lives of everyone on some half-baked plan to someone who we might find? Sure why not.
The only guy that can get us out of the bad place is going in there? Nah we can just pull you out with a tractor beam.
Your bodies will get warped and pulled if you get stuck in between, but everything else will be fine.
Oh our hull is going to be almost dissolved? Eh whatever.
The hulls is sinking and everyone will die in 3 minutes? Meh, let's take our time and have some dialogue.
I also like how it took the redhead 2 or 3 episodes to finally ask what the spore lady wanted instead of just haphazardly running away.
I feel like i have been able to overlook things like this before but they just stuck out this episode?
What Is a Woman? (2022)
Watchable. Biased. Uninformative.
I mean it's certainly entertaining but our narrator certainly has a bias that he tries to obscure with supposedly simple and innocent questions. Don't watch this expecting to actually learn much about the issues. This is not an objective or neutral probe into the issues. It seems like many try to meaningfully engage in the conversation but most of what they say is probably edited out for the takes which makes it looks like nobody knows what they are talking about. I was enjoying this but it got old pretty quickly and i stopped halfway through. It was like Michael Moore investigating an issue he already had a side on.
Yasuke (2021)
Belongs alongside other great samurai anime
Man this site used to be reliable. I don't understand where all these negative reviews come from. There is a brigade of prejudice trolls out there downvoting anything that might even have a whiff of racial themes. Many of the other negative reviews are people who were expecting a documentary instead of an anime because...why? Because they watched the trailer? Ridiculous.
This show is immensely creative with fantastic character development. Those complaining that the lead isn't interesting are wrong in my opinion. It's a relief to see a character that holds a painful history within them and we see it come out as the show develops--instead of many shows with over dramatic zeal and cliche.
So what if there is magic and fantasy? It doesn't detract from feel of an awesome samurai show. Maybe I'm biased because i'm also a fan of Samurai Jack, Afro Samurai, Samurai Champloo, etc... But the fight scenes are great and the respect for the culture is apparent.
It's a concise and well crafted show with an element of world-building that makes it immersive for 6 episodes. If you don't go in looking for racial elements or expecting a biopic or a shonen anime aimed at tweens, or whatever--you should be thoroughly entertained.
