Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Not quite what i expected
When I first heard about this movie I thought the story was of two young men, who found they had a deeper connection with each other then with the families they had. I also thought that the reactions to it being about two men being gay were outrageous. Now having seeing it I can see why some people would be uncomfortable with it. I thought the story was incredible, the acting was intense and very well done, but the scenes involving Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal were just too much for me. The nudity just didn't seem appropriately done or necessary and the fact that they showed gay love scenes and that these men met up again and again over the years for the purpose of having sex took away from what I thought the story was. I enjoyed the movie but it wasn't what I expected and there are things that I could have lived without seeing. If you really know what to expect from this movie then by all means go see it if you are interested. But definitely not for those who may be uncomfortable with the idea behind it.
Open Water (2003)
What a waste
This movie was such a disappointment. There was a barely there story-line, two main characters that were flat, little dialogue, too many pans of the ocean (we get it there in the middle of nowhere) and a pitiful ending. The characters have no backgrounds to begin with, and as the story evolves you learn little, so it's hard to believe they are a couple and not just two people cast together in the ocean. The shark scenes were satisfying because it is a fear that most can share, and using real sharks adds to the drama. But to have the people on the boat not notice soon after they return to the dock that two people are missing, I don't buy. Why wait till the next morning to clean up and count your supplies and then notice that two people are gone? How terrible a crew do you have to be to make that big a mistake, and then not notice until the next day and then do something only when it is too late? I didn't like this movie at all, if it was based on actually events, what events were it based on, how can they be sure they are accurate if they people die? Why not fill people in after-wards to what the real story is? I mean give people some sense of an ending, closer, something. This was not at all what I wanted to see and was a waste of my time. Give me a somewhat nice ending after that incredible stupidity of the boat crew, allow one person to live after that ordeal. Make it something realistic, but add a movie type feel to it and don't disappoint. Nice effort but better luck next time.
The Magic of Ordinary Days (2005)
Very good
I thought this movie was exactly what a hallmark movie should be. Happy, heartwarming, and has a happy ending. I love Skeet and I thought that he played Ray very well as a soft spoken farmer, and Keri was wonderful as the out of place women who finally finds happiness. The time-line makes the idea of an arranged marriage to cover a pregnancy more realistic because of the idea of children being born out of wedlock. I think that using the times, the events of that era, and the ideals that each different family has made this movie into something really sweet. I think that this movie is perfect for a family to watch, and it really is a heartwarming movie.
Ladder 49 (2004)
Great Movie
I found Ladder 49 to be very well written, the acting was touching, and the story was emotional. It was worth the watch. Firefighters are brave men and women who deserve our respect and deserved it even before events like 9,11. Even though this movie was created for the purpose of inspiration after the events of 9,11 i don't think it deserves to be categorized that way and pushed aside. Leaving that out of your mind will make this movie more enjoyable and no person should watch a movie with such a thought in their head anyway. It made me feel proud of those people who risk their lives everyday for the safety of strangers. It also made me feel the sadness for the families of these hero's who lose their lives as a result of trying to save someone else. Travolta and Phoenix are great actors in this movie, their characters are wonderful and the story was perfect. Although it made me cry, i would watch this again.
Ned Kelly (2003)
Not the best.
Although i found the story of Ned Kelly and his gang extremely interesting, i found this movie to be confusing and altogether not informative. The language itself was hard to understand, but the story was hard to follow. I was also disappointed with the ending. It didn't resolve anything for me, or even answer questions about the characters. The direction and style of the film i found to be in context with the time of the story. Health Ledger did a wonderful job portraying Australia's famous tragic hero. The casting for this movie worked incredibly well. The cast of characters worked so well together that they felt as though they were really family. I enjoyed the story, but was disappointed with the actual film.
