Sightseers (2012)
Quite Remarkabe
This movie stunned me. Not that it blew me over and left me shook in a scary way but this movie definitely takes you on an emotional journey. Very hard to define it is.
Even now(I just finished watching 5 minutes ago) I'm having trouble trying to come up with words that do this story justice. I guess in the end the word that describes this film overall is harrowing. It is scary but not in the traditional horror movie way. The characters are brilliant. They are believable and even relatable. The fact that you can identify with these people and simultaneously despise and enjoy them is maybe the most frightening aspect of the film. The characters are monsters but ultimately still human. They just want to find what makes them happy.
This movie is tense, awkward(in a way that really serves the story), scary, funny, subdued, egregious (but fittingly), and even endearing. It really is amazing. Some truly memorable scenes.
This film is B-E-A-U-tifully shot. Colors pop and are subdued at just the right levels and times. The English countryside looks absolutely gorgeous. Also great song choices for the movie that are used very effectively. The cover of season of the witch and the scene it was used with are a great pairing.
I found the end to be quite disturbing but great. This film isn't for everyone. But for those who get it, it is powerful story
I really can't think of anything bad to say about the film. I'm struggling to justify why I'm not giving it a 10/10 because its really close.
I was truly engrossed by the film.I'd give it a 9.5/10
Open Grave (2013)
Underwhelming
Not a bad movie. but not that good either.
In Short: cool setup for a movie and cool storyline but the overall execution was lacking. first 30-40 minutes are great and your really like wtf. and then you basically figure out everything 20 minutes later and are left with the last 40 minutes waiting for the characters to come to the conclusion that you already made.
Really not that scary, more thriller than anything but to be honest after about 30-40 minutes its really boring and repetitive. Just could have been much more
Interesting take on a plague story but I think a different setting, more scares, more tension, and the fact that you stop guessing about the movie about halfway through really makes this underwhelming
Found (2012)
Big Letdown IMO
Been needing to see this movie for a while now. bought myself a copy. ended disappointed
This thing had so much potential. the story is great. the execution not so much.
This is a drama not really horror at all. There are some graphic parts(decapitated heads) but the acts of violence all take place offscreen. I was never scared by the film. Sure Marty's situation is horrifying but make no mistake this movie is not scary.
Acting was pretty shoddy by everyone except Marty. Poor lighting design, poor audio mixing. Really was expecting a horror movie but it didn't pan out.
For all the hype this movie had, it just didn't live up. However the director definitely has great potential.
Fritt vilt (2006)
For the Slasher Fans
If you want a straight up solid slasher through and through look to Cold Prey. Why IMDb has this listed as a drama is beyond me.
While on an off the maps snowboarding expedition one of the group breaks his leg badly. phones don't work in the middle of the mountains(beautiful scenery in Norway) and its getting dark, he cant walk to the car so they find close shelter in an abandoned hotel. Simple Premise, expertly told and paced. Not once did I not believe the characters or the choices they make.
This really could be the most all around solid slasher i've seen and I have seen a ton of them. They are my favorite type of movie. THIS ONE IS GREAT. Really Solid Story as far as slashers come. Good cinematography, really breeds fear through its creepy shots. Solid sound editing/mixing. 0 plot holes. Pretty scary. Extremely... well... paced...That said don't expect anything new. Not my top slasher but definitely top 10. (Inside, High Tension, Halloween and Ils and the Strangers rank slightly higher for me if you count those last two as slashers, which I do) Every character is likable in some respect so your actually scared for them unlike the douchy characters in most modern American slashers. Really well acted by everyone in the film. Only 5 named characters. Killer is effectively scary. My only gripe about him is that he doesn't have the same iconic-ness that I feel he should(maybe my appreciation will grow). Solid scares but nothing absolutely omg heart stopping terrifying. Scariness would be 7.5/10 so still decent.
Really if you enjoy a good slasher and haven't seen this do yourself a favor and watch it. You will not regret it.
8/10 for the movie 9/10 in the slasher subcategory
Baghead (2008)
Pretty Awesome Movie
Great little movie. People have trouble with labeling this horror. I'm a huge horror movie buff and at times this is definitely horror. Not flatout terrifying but because of the low-key way its told it is definitely creepy and scary.
Really great premise for a movie, don't wanna give it away.
Low budget for sure. A little higher production quality could really make this movie amazing. Better sound design, lighting, could go along way. But the low budget is what makes it work because your not really sure if its a boring indie film about nothing or a horror but it works. It just works.Story is great. Characters are frustrating and awkward but ultimately great. Ending was a bit awkward.
If you are a fan of horror I highly recommend this pic. Just great simple premise and a few ideas you haven't seen. Lots of fun. Great Pic
Frailty (2001)
Great Horror Story but not a horror movie
So Frailty really does have a pretty great story, very creepy premise with tons of potential.
This was Bill Paxtons directing debut so for someones first film its pretty impressive.
Very dark tale that really had potential to be a classic of the horror genre but is given a thriller/drama treatment. It could have had the same exact story but through different cinematography and lighting and sound editing been as creepy as it needed to be for the truly disturbing story.
Some of the performances were very good particularly Matthew McCounaghey's. The little boy Fenton character was very good at times but not intense enough I felt. The whole movie actually could have been more tense to better serve the story. It is a truly frightening story but the movie didn't heighten this mood. The "god" was a little vague and it never mentioned them going to church or even that the dad was religious to begin with but putting that aside still a very intriguing movie with a few flaws.
All that said I definitely recommend the movie and will be thinking about it for a while. Nice movie. 7.5/10
Honogurai mizu no soko kara (2002)
Not as good as other Asian Horror
Huge horror fan so if your looking for a horror aficionado's take on the movie then read this brief review Good Story, eeriness abounds, decent scares yet lacking the punch that I needed
More chilling than scary I guess. Read some review so I watched it. Not gonna lie kinda disappointed.
Solid story but other horror movies deal with similar themes and are just handled better. very dreary. almost too much. weather is shite in every scene. maybe if the movie was more stylized i would have liked it.
Some decent scares but I watched shutter from Thailand the day before and that blew this out of the water in terms of scares. maybe biased on scare factor because shutter was so recently watched
Idk i cant say its bad. its definitely a decent movie but not great.
Sushi Girl (2012)
Stylish Crime Mystery thats Decent Enough for a RainyDay
A 6 out of 10 for me means that this movie is one I would recommend to a friend. Its not great, but certainly entertaining on some levels,
Cool and stylish gangster movie in the vein of Lucky Number Sleven and Reservoir Dogs but that being said both of those movies are far superior. Tarantino-ish, interesting characters, non-linear storytelling
The violence in this movie is pretty gruesome. Not extreme but pretty brutal and there's a good bit of it.
Cool little story and the twist at the end is cool but you've seen it done before and probably done better. Also the script was pretty weak at times. Dialogue could have been better. Decent enough acting
One really cool thing about this movie though was the fact that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill plays a flamboyant sadistic gangster. That alone is worth the recommendation. and he plays it really well.
Also you see the sushi girls nude body quite a bit which never really hurts a film like this
On other peoples scale this might be a 7 or 8. I was really tired when I watched this movie and it just didn't do quite enough for me to for sure give it a 7. The Netflix scale is 3 stars for liked it 4 stars for really liked it and 5 for loved it. So that makes this worthy of a 6 by translation,
Secuestrados (2010)
The most realistic movie I have ever seen. BRILLIANT
The straight forward story of a kidnapping is brilliantly executed with great cinematography and incredible performances.
This movie, most would agree, is not a horror movie in the traditional sense. There are no monsters, zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, psycho killers, haunted house, or dumb twist. That said it is horrific in how utterly real it all feels. The performances are spot on. True it is dubbed and probably not true to the original Spanish lines the characters would deliver but there really isn't any bit of the movie that cannot be understood without dialogue. The performances are that strong.
This movie is really what you see is what you get. And what you see are some of the most intense character examinations put on film. Something happens to the characters and they react accordingly. The thing I hate about some horror movies are the stupid and unbelievable actions of some of the characters, especially the victims. But here every character was believable throughout. The nervous father who doesn't know whats happening to his family but eventually has had enough. The scuzzy, and twisted thief who delightfully terrorizes the mother and daughter who are scared shitless but not helpless. The thief who really isn't cut out for a crime this brutal. And the ringleader thief who tries to be calm and acts like he has nothing to lose only to find out later that he actually doesn't and descends into chaos. They are all brilliant characters.
The very long shots and sometimes slightly shaky camera (something I usually hate but was really tastefully done here) really bring the tension of the scene and the actors performances to life.
Their performances are even more incredible when you take into account that this film only has 12 different camera shots. 12, and 4 of those shots are actually shown split screen style with a paired shot so over the course of an 84 minute movie there are only 10 cuts to a different camera angle. Thats over 8 minutes, on average, per shot. The acting in each of these long shots is amazing as well as the cinematography of these individual shots which track around the house to follow characters at points and stop on certain things deliberately at some points while the chaos in the background is still visible.
I LOVED THE CINEMATOGRAPHY. Very unique. The cinematography and incredible performances are what make this move great. The straight forward story of a kidnapping is brilliantly executed with great cinematography and incredible performances.
