Halo (2022)
I could write a raelly long review and break down how terrible episode 1 was but here's a short one;
CRINGE! Terrible acting, stiff awkward out of place looking CGI, awful script despite a wealth of lore in the franchise. Superseeded by cheap animations on Youtube or books.
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
I agree it starts to lose a certain pace in the later third....
.... or half, somewhere around there. I felt it due to the beautiful hypnotic running metronome throught the film; there is so much to love here. It's honest; it's beautifully filmed and bold. Without a doubt at all worth every moment of your time and I feel that repeated viewings is definitely for me.
Martyrs (2008)
It deserves a 1 because it's so brutal...
I have to say the other reviews on here giving it a 1 saying "it has no point" are completely and uttrely oblivious as the point is made very clear.
The title alone pretty much explains the premise and the point.
It's dark, violent and genuinely disgusting but "pointless" and "torture porn" get a grip.
Many of the reviews here never finished the film - that's all I can say.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
A masterclass in cinema and how to use style to elevate a story...
Welcome to A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Ana Ampirpour's breakout gritty Iranian Vampire Western.
First shown at Sundance Festivle in 2014 after a passionately recieved Indiegogo campaign and other creative fundraising projects - including a party I wish I was cool enough to have been at and donating to name a street in the pre-production map of Bad City.
Filmed using vintage anamorphic lenses (JDC Xtal Xpress to name one) and format which allows 35mm film to shoot widescreen it is visually a carefully crafted and loving modern kiss to the noir Genre. This film demands attention without ever feeling like an over-embelishment of style.
Even self described as "the first Iranian vampire spaghetti western" Ampirpour brought a lot more to the table than crisp visuals or Genre tropes. The meticulous respect of art that came before and putting so many elements that just work into one cohesive experience truly sets this apart.
The soundtrack follows suite bellowing anxiety, hope, Persian rock and even a stand out scene that plays a song by American Post-Punk band White Lies.
Sheila Vand plays 'The Girl' a perfectly poised chador-cladden often silent character who seeks out Men who hurt or take advantage of women in the intriguing and aptly named "Night City" - did I mention this film is a Noir?
Vand's character however is not a typical femme fatale, nor the sole focus of the script. After running across a very drugged up fancy-dress Dracula she senses something different in him and due to his state 'The Girl' ends up pushing him in a perfect culmination of mise-en-scene along the streets she frequents to kill on her Skateboard back to her surprisingly expressive room. This "Dracula" is played by Arash Marandi who is also called Arash in the film and met early on.
Arash is first introduced to us stuck looking after his manipulative Heroin addicted father under the cruel abuse of dealer and pimp Saeed who due to his nasty ways finds himself in the crosshair of 'The Girl'.
Both actors look magnetic on screen with so much character development you'd not usually expect from such an unusual story - as said before this is all due to Ampoir's excellent amalgamation of artistic style; blending great sound, acting and technical ability of the crew.
Althought this film may appear to be very geared towards hardcore fans of Arthouse or Noir it's execution makes it a versitile film that is a must watch.
Misbehaviour (2020)
This is a beautiful film with a few small teething problems
Firstly I can't believe my eyes at the low review score.
I watch (or try to) films from every Genre, depict every political and social narrative.
There is nothing to dislike here. It's not gender swapping shallow rehashes and trying to sell it with 4th wave feminism. It is a BRILLIANT and accessible film about a bunch of brave women. Now that isn't to imply we don't need a badass roster of women in our Marvel's and DC's but this is a story of real heroic women fighting against a seriously oppressive regime.
I thought that a few of the younger characters were going to be obnoxiously off-putting but for ONCE they aren't, for once despite a few slightly cringe moments near the start, they are real characters with the attitude to fight for change.
I think no matter what race you are, the colour of your skin or your gender you can take something away from this movie and see how we should all be continuing to fight against injustices from every angle.
9/10 is a very high mark. It didn't have a few hundred million pounds in CGI, hell the angles from many perspectives can seem confusing. However I disregard the notion that this is another "woke film". It is unironically woke.
Extracted (2012)
Brilliant.
As with all films in this genre I assume it would be easy to look too much into it and uncover plot flaws or put it down because there isn't much action, but this film is more than your usual sci-fi bullets and blood film. The pace of the film is never dulled and it doesn't become boring because the characters and involvement you are likely to get drawn in very early on.
To summarise: - Great acting. - Best experienced in the right mood (this is no Inception). - Enough depth to be believable. - VERY well made on a fraction of the budget other terrible films are given.
As the other reviews have said I can hardly believe the low rating this film has been given.
