The Lion King (2019)
Poor beginning, great middle, decent end
The original Lion King is one of my most favourite films of all time, so I was excited to see this movie and how it compares.
I found the first third of the movie to be very flat, bar the opening song a lot of the time it felt like the voice actors were not performing their roles with the same passion as the original, the loss of a lot of the original voice actors didn't help with this, the greatest loss being that of Jeremy Irons Scar. In addition the song 'can't wait to be king' failed to be as magical and the less said about the butchering of 'be prepared' the better. 5/10
Happily from the gorge scene onwards the films picks up, becoming a lot more fun and entertaining, Timon and Pumbaa are fantastic with a lot of what seem like improvised lines as well as additional scenes that help to flesh out the movie, the second song from Timon & Pumbaa is also a particular highlight. 9/10
As the film moves into its finale there are a lot of echoes of the original movie however though enjoyable it doesn't quite hit its predecessors grandeur, regardless of this it was still highly enjoyable. 8/10
Overall I did enjoy watching this movie and would certainly recommend watching it to anyone who isn't sure, just be aware that it is not quite as good as the original masterpiece.
Overall score 7.3/10 rounded down to 7/10 for IMDb
Blinded by the Light (2019)
The warmth emanates throughout this great film.
We went to the 11th secret unlimited Cineworld screening and had the pleasure to see this frankly amazing film. Had no idea about it before hand but found it to be a thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming film. The cinematography was fantastic, really sucking you into the story the film is telling, added to that the acting was superb, you could really feel the characters come to life making you feel each triumph and setback and get a true sense of the emotions each scene and character portrays. I would highly recommend you see this film, it really is fantastic.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Did we watch the same movie???
I honestly think a number of the people rating and commenting on this film are doing so based on the critics reviews and have actually not watched the movie at all!
I have watched and enjoyed every X-men movie, even the not so great ones and this falls somewhere in between, it's not the best but is far from the worst in the franchise.
I feel it does the dark Phoenix story a lot better than X3 including an actual explanation of the Phoenix force this time around, the action scenes were all gripping and the story continued at a decent pace which kept your attention the whole time.
I feel sad that this is likely the last X-men movie we will get but look forward to their re-birth in the MCU.
Although I have enjoyed each of these films the MCU does things just better so I can't wait to see what they will do with the X-men when they eventually bring them back.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Kaiju 10/10 humans 6/10
Firstly please ignore the critics, they clearly have no idea of what they are seeing with a Kaiju movie. The complaints of too much monsters fighting is ridiculous, why else would you come to see a movie titled 'Godzilla: King of the monsters'?! The monsters are all rendered impressively and you can tell the director has a great love for the lore that has come before in previous Kaiju movies both from the east and the west. Their battles are intense and fully satisfying.
On the other hand the human characters are in the main just background noise, occasionally I found myself thinking please move away from the humans I want to see more Kaiju, particularly with the final battle scene which I won't spoil here.
Overall I found this to be a great movie for any Kaiju lovers as well as those seeking action, as I say ignore the critics and go see this film, you won't be dissapointed
