Velma (2023)
A for Effort!
The writing team deserves a huge round of applause.
Every single one of them is clearly trying their hardest to give this their absolute best. You can really feel their effort in every single line.
Mindy Kaling's personality shines brightly through the characters and the story line. Every bit of Scooby-ness that we grew up with is now just pre-Kaling. She has made the Scooby-verse unapologetically her own and all I can say is, Kaling is now cannon, deal with it.
Unfortunately, despite their laudable efforts, the story and characters consistently fall flat. I am absolutely certain that every one of their moms feel incredibly proud of them right now. But for the rest of us, it's just an awkward Kaling-fest.
The Rehearsal: Gold Digger (2022)
Amazing potential but the subjects are hard to like
The first episode was incredible, but the second and third episodes focus on people who are very hard to like. The woman who wants to see what it's like to raise a child is such a caricature of of a half-witted religious fanatic that I'm pretty sure she's just trolling.
John Bronco Rides Again (2021)
Product placement with a plot
The show was somewhat amusing but it just beats you over the head with a relentless drum beat of product placements. It's as if their one and only goal was to cram in as many product shots as humanly possible then they tried to weave it together with something resembling a plot.
Reservation Dogs (2021)
Lots of potential. I'd love to see more seasons.
Highly recommended. Strong characters, acting, writing, and storyline. Hopefully they pick it up for at least a few more seasons. I'd love to see where they can take it.
Katla (2021)
Great, except for the chronic stupidity of the characters
This show has so much potential but it's undermined by the characters' inability to ask basic questions or even piece together what's right in front of them. Granted, if anyone in the show were to exhibit normal intelligence, then it would have been impossible to string out the main plot line beyond four episodes.
If the show is renewed for another season, I sincerely hope they move beyond using stupidity as a means to artificially drive the story forward.
