Nesting (2023– )

I want more!
21 April 2024
I found this show by chance really.

I was watching L&O Toronto and I wondered where I knew the ME from, as I was watching her filmography I found this show, the cover was interesting so I clicked and when I read the synopsis I knew I had to watch it.

Thankfully the show didn't disappoint, it's a great, light and fun watch.

The chemistry between the actresses is off the charts, it's well written and surprisingly well shot, I expected something very low budget but this could easily have been on TV.

In the end I wanted more, much more! The show is too fast paced, it needed either longer episodes or more episodes. It would have been fun to see them go on more dates with the men. I would have loved to see more of the dentist and his boyfriend.

I wanted more interaction between the blonde boyfriend whose name I can't remember (Nico?) and the women. He was so annoyed with them, i wanted that part of the show to be further explored.

Anyway, I do hope there will be a second season and I really hope for longer episodes!

Renegade Nell (2024– )

Surprisingly good!
12 April 2024
I first saw the trailer, it seemed fun and I put it on my watchlist. Then I saw the poster, I didn't put two and two together and was immediately put off.

I finally gave it a shot when I saw the good reviews and to my surprise it is a good show, it's fun, fast paced, there are cute moments, funny moments and it's at times very endearing.

Was it perfect? No. Probably because it's a Disney show.

Sometimes it felt superficial, there was too much action and not enough character exploration, the show threw information at us and just expected the viewer to accept it. I really wished more Eularia, she was amazing in it, I wish there was a real talk between Nell and Sofia. And I really wished Nell had taken the time to talk to other people instead of barging in everywhere, like ai want to know what happened to the kids in the prison!

Anyway, to end on a good note, the music was amazing! Bravo to whoever put it together!

How to win awards
30 January 2024
I heard of this movie when it won at Cannes and I had zero intention of seeing it, Cannes movies are too artsy and really not my cup of tea.

Then the awards season began in the US, the movie began to win pretty much everything and I still had no intention of seeing it.

It was only after seeing Sandra Huller during an actresses roundtable talking about how she had to balance 3 languages in the movie that I became interested.

So I gave it a go, ready to hate it, and with no fail in the end I did hate.

But i didn't hate it because it's a bad movie, which it is but I expected it, I hated it because it could have been great!

Critics seem to forget that movies are supposed to be entertaining and many directors manage to make good movies out of a boring subject matter, take Adam Mckay or Aaron Sorkin. This movie could have been huge like Erin Brokovich.

It made me think of Ryan Murphy's show about OJ Simpson, how at the end my first thought was that there was no way other countries judicial systems were as messed up as the american, I guess this movie proved me wrong. But again, the 10 hours tv show was much more interesting.

It has such an important message but it's so badly told, I seriously don't understand why it's getting so much praise.

The Holdovers (2023)

A beautiful nice movie
29 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start by saying that I hated The Descendants and found Downsizing boring as hell and very disappointing. I also hate most fancy movies, you know the ones that feel european even though they're not, and unnecessarily complicated just to show that everyone's lives is boring, those kinds of movies. Movies the critics love and they always win lots of prizes.

And even though I hate those movies, I'm the person who will watch them just so I can say, and tell everyone who will listen, that they are bad.

So every award season I will watch most movies competing and this year was no different.

I started The Holdovers expecting suicide, depression, disease, long silences, long takes of boring characters staring through a window, characters astonished that life has no meaning and many other tropes used in fancy, award shows movies.

So I finally started watching it and imagine my surprise when I found myself thoroughly enjoying the movie! At some point I even checked the time because I was enjoying myself and wanted to see if there was time for some creepy stuff to show up. I spent the second half of the movie expecting suicide or some kind of death which was a little off putting but I still enjoyed myself.

In the end it's just a nice, heartwarming Christmas movie. It even has an end!

Actually it's so nice I can't believe it's winning any prize at all!

It's just loud noises with swearing.
29 January 2024
Why do american shows have to be so loud? Seriously?

Let me preface by saying that I started watching this after seeing Scavengers Reign and it probably didn't help my perception of this show but here it goes.

The moment the girl starts singing I stopped watching. The end!

I'm kidding I did come back to it later.

First of all, I was very excited about this show, I wouldn't be writing this review if I wasn't. When I read the synopsis it made me think of Good Omens and Lucifer and I couldn't wait to check it out.

The moment it came out I started watching with a big smile on my face that quickly started to disappear. The intro was great, and I immediately became aware that the tone of the show would be very different from what I was expecting but it did make me think of the show Harley Quinn, which I love, so I kept watching.

And I still couldn't get it, I started to get annoyed because it seemed like I was watching loud, overtly excited people swear at everything and I wondered if the show was written by a 14 year old boy (to my surprise, it isn't). Anyway, I kept watching, apparently the protagonist has a girlfriend, great, it's one positive thing, then I see that the girlfriend is the sane one and it also annoys me because the wise girlfriend supporting the main character is so 90's.

Then Charlie started to sing and I stopped watching because no one in the world besides americans likes musicals and I'm not american.

It should be the end of this review but then I started reading so many good reviews it made me wonder if i had misjudged the show so I finished the first episode, and I still hate it because it has the maturity of a 14 year old and thousands of years old beings shouldn't be just childish, they either become childish and cruel or wise and bored.

A fly in the wall
29 January 2024
I started watching knowing nothing about the behind the scenes. I knew there was a bunch of famous artists, I knew about the french parody and I definitely remembered Bruce Springsteen's weird face while singing.

I was instantly fascinated by the whole thing, it's a great watch, a lot of fun facts I loved to hear about. It's the kind of story that's so absurd it shouldn't have worked out but in the end it did.

There are some heartwarming moments, the Belafonte bit was beautiful or whenever they would cheer after someone sang. Most of them seemed genuinely excited to be there and the doc makes you feel like a witness to it all.

However I do wish there were more speakers, they should have reached out to more singers, I would have loved to see footage of the singers talking about the project afterwards.

It also makes you question why those songs don't happen anymore, can you imagine Beyonce and Taylor Swift coming together to raise money to a cause?

And then I remembered that most artists nowadays won't set foot outside North America and Europe when they go on their "world tours" so I'm feeling bittersweet about it all but it's still a great watch.

Boring!
26 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I fast-forwarded throughout the whole thing. Boring from beginning to end.

The plot was so ridiculous and predictable I sometimes wondered if it was a CW show.

Talos hair was all over the place and very distracting, one scene it was short, the next it was long and messy.

Killing off Maria Hill was a big mistake and one more notch in the Marvel downfall.

Also Marvel villains just don't work anymore, the I want to destroy earth or humanity is overdone, we know the end of the story, everyone does.

Everything was uninspired with one exception, Olivia Colman, as usual, she was amazing and the ONLY interesting character.

Marvel NEEDS to stop making movies for potential new fans, just respect your fanbase and the fact that they grew up, the fans are more mature, we want substance and continuity. I'm too old to watch CW shows.

Surprisingly good!
2 January 2021
I didn't expect much when I started, I didn't even know what it was about and I was nicely surprised. The movie is cute, the women are beautiful, sometimes funny, sometimes sad but for me the best part, probably because I've watched too much american productions, was the portrayal of a betrayal. American productions tend to be very single minded and overly dramatic when it comes to cheating, they treat it as this awful, almost inhuman behavior, people even go to TV to apologize about it (imagine me eye rolling now). But in this movie they show betrayal as something complicated, they showed both sides, there were no villains, just humans, living and trying to deal with their feelings. Also the scene they are both in the car coming back from the getaway week-end was amazing, no dialogue, but there was so much said.

It tried to be Portrait of Lady on Fire...
1 January 2021
It tried to be Portrait of Lady on Fire, but it just tried and didn't succeed. There is absolutely no chemistry between Ronan and Winslet, they're great actresses but there wasn't much they could do with such a boring and badly directed movie. Everything is needlessly grim and dirty, I don't need to see K. Winslet peeing ffs! The "you look tired we can share a bed" line almost made me give up on the movie, what a cliché. Also, and this is one of the main reasons I hated the movie, what's wrong with the sound?! I have a very slight, self diagnosed, case of misophonia and this movie was torture to my ears! Who knew walking could be so loud! And the "brilliant" director even managed to make the sound of waves annoying and oppressing, waves and annoying should never be on the same sentence but "brilliant" director managed it perfectly. I bet even Christopher Nolan wouldn't hire those people!
