Plodding pace and "twists" you can see coming spoilt it for me
I really wanted to like this series, considering it was coming from the creators of Dark, which I loved.
Unfortunately, one episode in, due to the slow pacing, unlikeable/torture characters I just couldn't bring myself to commit to the series, as I had with Dark. As a result, I found myself using the 1.5x feature on Netflix to skip through the next few episodes and then eventually when even that didn't work, I had to stop watching.
The premise is that a bunch of passengers and the captain find themselves in contact with a lost ship where all of it's passenges are missing. Most of the time is spent watching passengers talk to each other in different languages which they can't understand. A bummer coz it turns out I am not the only Dark fan who ended up walking away from this!
The Midnight Club (2022)
Snoozefest..if you like horror, stay away!
What a letdown..I went it with mid level expectations to see what the fuss was about and oh boy, was i dissapointed. And this coming from a legend of hill house fan! The story is basically about a bunch of terminally ill kids who form a 'midnight club' dedicated to storytelling midly scary tales and exploring the mystery of the hospice they are in. 3 episodes in, I found myself skipping past the other 7 episodes past the annoying stories and molasses slow pace. The finale in episode 10 was a total letdown and left a lot of threads hanging and (shudder!) teasing a season 2.
Bottom line- if you are fan of watching horror movies/series, stay away from this train-wreck of a series. The only thing scary about it was how I could have wasted 10 hours of my life and narrowly avoided! I will be passing on any mike flanagan movies or series in the future.
Vikram (2022)
If you're looking for a crass, story-lite, overhyped movie, this is for you
I'll admit it- i loved the original Vikram movie (1986) which was a spy thriller and ahead of its time in Indian cinema. Not surprisingly, I had similar expectations for this movie as I walked in.
Lo and behold, I was hit with a badly done knockoff copy of reservoir dogs/pulp fiction/KGF coupled with crass dialogues, cuss words and poor character development (apart from Kamal's character). This turned out to be a typical mass masala movie involving gangsters, corrupt police officials whom the hero literally mows down using a WW-I era machine gun. I wish I could get back those 3 hours of my life, my money and my dead brain cells.
Needless to say, this is going to be my last kamal movie. If you're a die-hard kamal fan who doesn't care about others think and wants to kill some time watching this in a theater, go for it.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Came in wanting to binge on this...but could'nt!
Before I post my review, wanted to say that I really enjoyed the Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor as well. Having said that, Midnight Mass was a huge disappointment..Spoiler free thoughts below-
1. Like many of the other reviewers here, I spotted the old people makeup right away and this provided an idea of what was coming up next.
2. The pacing was much much slower than anything I had expected, having seen the previous 2 shows mentioned above. I found myself fast forwarding through episodes 4-7.
3. There was way too much of religious exposition in the show. And before you say what'd you expect considering the title of the show, let me say that this was at the expense of the afore mentioned pacing and the storyline suffered as a result.
4. The ending also left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Snoozefest
I really wanted to like this series and came in with high expectations. However, the slow pacing, bad wigs and lackluster FX made it a snoozefest for me in the end . The scenes with the main character's daughter, where she snorts everything in sight, sleeps with everyone in sight and whines about her father with high expectations, made me generously use the fast forward feature on Netflix.
If you're looking for good superhero movies, watch the recent Synder cut instead. Though I am by no means a fan of the director, the 4 hour special is head and shoulders above this.
The Predator (2018)
Much better than the one star and two star reviews make it out to be
After reading all the reviews criticizing the movie/director/Olivia Munn, I was expecting a garbage movie when I walked in. However to my surprise, the movie was waaaay better than what the reviews said. I liked the entire backstory to the predator and the ragtag team that tries to go up against it. On the flip side, the dogs accompanying the predator that then becomes a"friendly" was a bit hard to swallow.
Bottomline: Worth a shot! and don't be fooled by the numerous bad reviews.
The Nun (2018)
Was expecting more..
First and foremost, the movie is not as bad as others have reported. Some of the scenarios in the movie, (without going into detail) are very well done and genuinely scary. The scares are also a bit unpredictable and led to some nervous laughter in the theater I watched this in. Having said that, the plot could definitely could have been better and the entire movie could have been tightened up in the editing room- a lot of the time was spent waiting for something to happen. Some of the decisions the characters make are also not entirely logical (splitting up instead of staying together while entering dark spaces). I was expecting more, coming out of the movie and instead my reaction was "not bad"!
Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
good movie but..
Overall, was a slow but solid movie about the underhanded tactics employed by the cartels and the government. Would have preferred a more conclusive ending to the movie- that's my biggest gripe. Benecio del toro's character is the man!!
Hereditary (2018)
Much too slow for my taste
Seeing the numerous critics reviews of the movie and being a huge fan of horror, I decided to give it a shot. While the acting is top notch across the board and Toni Collette in particular hits it out of the park, the movie itself was too slowly paced and I found myself glancing at my watch quite a few times throughout. Some of the twists towards the end in the main leads also left me scratching my head.
Bottom line- if you appreciate great acting and can stand the slow pace, give this a shot else if you are looking for a great horror movie, stay sway.
