The Last Witch (2013)
Grabbed me from the start
I was just googling about on Amazon when I saw this film and decided the plot summary was interesting enough to give it a go. Though understated, the plot jumped up and started running immediately. When it ended, it felt like hitting a wall at a run. The sudden realization that it was over and there was no second episode left me stunned and begging for more, but there was no more to be had. Cinema interruptus, to put a name to it. This show doesn't ask for a series, it stands up, stomps it's feet and demands a series. That those responsible for not provide one is a crime. I can only pray that someone with money and some sense of cinematic justice with pick up this poor orphan and give it the family of deserves.
One Piece (2023)
Impressive adaptation
When i heard a live action version of One Piece was in the offing, I couldn't imagine how they would adapt this acid trip of a show to live actors.
Well, after watching all of season one, I'm impressed. They dropped most of the insanity and actually managed to convert it into a decent bit of cinema. The mild plot rewrites produced a mature and cohesive show with legs, without sacrificing it's core.
Iñaki Godoy as Luffy was as perfect a casting as I have ever seen. He fully embodied this slightly more sane Luffy and the skills he demonstrated in "The Imperfects" were a mere foreshadowing of what he is capable of. He carries this show quite ably without diminishing his co-stars.
Well done, I can hardly wait for the next season.
High Moon (2014)
Nice romp, but seemed unfinished.
They basically threw everything but the kitchen sink into this film, but they kind of forgot the ending. :( As others have noted, it had enough turnabouts to set your head spinning, and any attempt to predict where it was going was bound to failure.
I liked the noir-ish feel of the old space serials, clearly the makers of this film were heavily influenced by that genre.
If you be looking for a serious SF show, you be lookin in the wrong place watching this - but if you were in the mood for a light romp with lots of plot twists, this should be just your cup 'o tea.
I'd have given it an 8 if it had a more satisfactory ending.
Scorpion (2014)
Akin to sitting in an outhouse
(This is my first ever review, so go easy with me, eh?)
As a frequent viewer and reader of SF, I probably set my sights too high on occasion when watching shows on TV. With this show, ANY expectations would have been too high.
Some shows skirt the rim on technical issues. Some drop the ball occasionally, but the script is good enough to kind of slide past those moments.
This show clearly did not have ANYONE with ANY technical knowledge of ANYTHING working on it. This show was a train wreck of bad science from start to finish. To a person who is just a little obsessive about having good science behind the shows I watch, it was like a non-stop mental assault, relieved only when the credits rolled.
As an Aspie with a high IQ, this show would putatively be about people just like me. Put plainly, they weren't - not even close.
Find something else to watch; even watching your toenails grow would be better than watching this garbage. It would certainly not be as insulting to your intelligence.
Through the Wormhole (2010)
Good attempt at discussing science, but badly flawed
I love science shows and watch them whenever my wife isn't around (she'll allow me Mythbusters, so I'm good). I also love Morgan Freeman, and wanted to love this show, but no dice.
I found myself yelling back at the TV during the episode I watched and when this happens with a science show there's got to be something wrong.
What I saw was an uncritical eye allowing often questionable cutting edge hypotheses to pass without applying appropriate skepticism. I had to change the channel as I was getting so annoyed, the first time this has ever happened to me with a science show.
I'd go into detail, but I've apparently scrubbed my mind of the all too painful memory.
I'll stick with Neil deGrasse Tyson, thanks. I just want to give that guy a hug every time he's on TV.
Ghost Whisperer (2005)
Great show but some minor quibbles
Been watching this show off the net for a little while now (never can seem to be in front of the tube when this is on) and I gotta say I love the concept. I loved the concept of the Sixth Sense and this is a direct descendant (ok, maybe a complete rip off, but who cares?).
JLH is a Major hottie, and there is nothing I like more than a cool show with a hottie for a lead. ^_^ (can you say Buffy the vampire slayer? I knew you could!)
One minor quibble is when she has premonitions or otherwise sees visions this violates the basic premise of the show - that her only ability is to see the dead. This has featured prominently in quite a number of episodes I've seen, pushing the 50% mark I'm sure. The writers have to throttle this back greatly if this show is to retain any kind of internal consistency.
Other minor quibble is the involvement of that so-called-medium James Van Praagh in the production of this show (note how I didn't call him a fraud or self delusional). Nothing annoys me more than people who claim to have supernatural powers. Sure, the show is all about that stuff, but it's just a show (like the X-Files, Touched by an angel, etc.). This guy, and others like him prey on the emotions of real life people who have lost loved ones and that just isn't right. You would think that by now everyone understands the cold reading techniques used by these "speakers to the dead", but they continue to find folks that are taken in by their trickery. It's so sad and so very infuriating.
But... Really yummy show. I'd recommend it to anyone. Just don't buy the DVDs so that JVP guy won't get any residuals. ^_^
Crossing Jordan (2001)
Love the show but...
Love the show but...
Ken Howard's abysmal Boston accent makes me want to gag.
Why is it that no one can manage to do a decent Boston accent unless they came from there?
Maybe they could hire Matt Damon to school these people on how to speak Bostonian. :)
Love the rest of the cast.
Especially Miguel Ferrer. Love his acting. :)
Jerry O'Connell still can't act, but I keep rooting for him to learn.
And I have nothing more to say, hate that 10 line minimum.
