Mysterious Skin (2004)
Hard to watch
Before I started writing this review I tried to think about ten minutes how should I start and what should I say about this. I still don't know but this movie affected my emotions and thoughts so much that I just have to write this comment.
After you watch this movie, you can't stop thinking about it. I though about this for weeks afterwards and I actually felt physically sick whenever I was picturing this movies scenes in my head. Child abuse is something that I really can't handle to even read and that was one of the main reasons why I wanted to watch this movie in the first place. I don't regret it. It was really, really hard to watch this - especially the first thirty minutes - but it was worth it. This movie is really amazing. Brady Corbet and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are both marvelous in this movie. Both of them reflects their characters perfectly; their emotions, feelings and actions. I was surprised by it even though I knew they are both excellent actors - this movie's theme is just so dark and strong that I was still a little bit skeptical. I shouldn't have been because this acting was possibly one of the greatest I have ever seen. It really amazes me.
Many of the people who have watched this movie have said that they enjoyed much more about Neil's (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) storyline. Yes, it was more interesting in a way because he remembered the abuse clear as day and he's actions spoke for it through the movie. Brian (Brady Corbet) didn't remember anything except that he was sitting in the basement after that night and he's nose was bleeding. It was still interesting to watch how he tried to collect the pieces of the puzzle and how he became friends with Neil's friend Eric. I didn't quite understand the UFO concept in this, though. Brian befriended wit Avalyn - a girl who said that she had kidnapped by aliens. Together they try to find out everything about Brian's past - about the missing five hours. They're sure that aliens have kidnapped Brian too. In the movie there's a scene where Brian, his mother and his sister saw a UFO at night floating above their house. That was mainly the thing I didn't understand. Were the aliens and UFOs real or what? Clearly Brian wasn't kidnapped by aliens, he was abused by his baseball coach - but what about Avalyn?
The last scene in this movie made me shiver. Neil and Brian are in coach's apartment and everything reveals. Neil tells Brian everything about the night which Brian can't remember. Brian breaks down at Neil's lap and Neil's last lines were heartbreaking. I was crying. In this scene there's hope. They can't wipe away their pasts but they can affect their futures and actions. Neil and Brian are bonded because of their past but I can see how they cope in the future - together.
This movie is really outstanding even though the subject is powerful and sad. I would definitely recommend it to everyone but I have to say that it really is rough to watch this and you can't just wipe away it from your thoughts.
Beautiful Thing (1996)
Loving this
I absolutely love this movie. I have watched it several times and it has become one of my favorite movies - it really is a beautiful thing.
The characters are all awesome and special. Jamie and Ste are both really adorable and I love it how they're first really awkward around each other but then become closer and fall in love. The scene were Ste is first time sleeping in Jamie's bed reflects it brilliantly. Neither of them knows what to say and just sits on the bed, Jamie reading the magazine and Ste eating his sandwich. This particular scene is one of my favorite because it's just so sweet and funny.
We don't know that much about Ste. We know that his father and brother abuses him and that he's athletic and more popular than Jamie. But that's about it. In the beginning of the movie when the other boys bullies Jamie, Ste comes along because he doesn't really want to be an outcast or different. It's interesting to follow how he comes braver and accept that he's gay and in love with Jamie. And the scene at the end of the movie - were Ste and Jamie dances in front of a crowd - we really see how he has changed.
Sandra, Jamie's mother, is also a wonderful character. I love it how she doesn't play just the mom role - she isn't there simply because the main character needs a mother, she is there to have her own story along Jamie's and Ste's. I really enjoy the scenes were she is - the movie wouldn't be as brilliant as it is without her. She is really fun character and brings the single parenthood's difficulties into the movie. Also I love Sandra's and Jamie's relationship. She is always there for her son. Linda Henry really knows how to act.
This movie shows us many things. It's really sweet and beautiful but also hilarious - I laughed so many times during this! The accents were so lovely and the actors marvelous. I really love this.
The Grudge (2004)
Didn't fill my expectations
Many of my friends has said to me that "The Grudge" is one of the scariest movies they have ever seen and that they couldn't sleep at all after watching it. So I watched a couple of clips about the movie and I was quite terrified afterwards. I definitely wanted to see the movie cause I really enjoy horror films even though they scare me to death.
This on the other hand, didn't. I watched this quite easily and I didn't even have to hide behind our couch and that is saying a lot, trust me. Sure, Kayako is pretty creepy and all but I didn't get the feeling which I usually have when I watch a horror film - the chills and all. My expectations were pretty high, I admit it, but still, it needed something more to be actually scary.
I did like watching this film nevertheless - all at least it wasn't wasted time that I used. The plot is quite interesting and Kayako's story is just sad. The idea about that much of rage and grudge is scary but the implementation wasn't.
Anyway, I have to say - I am disappointed.
