Saw X (2023)
What's with the title?
I can think of many titles for this movie but I will admit they aren't better despite being more accurate. Saw 1.5? Saw: Mexico? That's basically what it is and it would probably have gotten one of those titles if it had premiered on Netflix, for better or worse. Some things are strange about this movie like being the highest rated out of any Saw movie? It's not bad I just disagree that it deserves that level of praise. Again, the title doesn't make sense as this chronically lines up with being arguably a sequal to the first movie but a predecessor to the 2nd movie. This is my background with the Saw series: I watched the first 7 movies as they were released and there are definitely some I like more than others but I would say I enjoyed them all and I am a fan of the series, however I have not seen Jigsaw or Spiral and have intententionally been avoiding them based on what people are saying about them. So Saw X is basically trying to stitch itself in between the first and second movies and the transition isn't exactly the smoothest. Overall it tries to have an emotional story with some "surprises" that aren't exactly hard to see coming if you have seen some other Saw movies.
The Black Phone (2021)
Leaves more questions than answers
An interesting movie worth seeing, but definitely flawed and it didn't care to explain anything in the end. "The Grabber"? Really? It's like they didn't even try to come up with a good name for him. The little girl Gwen was not explained at all. How did she have the dreams and visions that were accurate? Was it God? Was it something else? What was with the phone? Could the Grabber actually hear it too and why? And how did these kids get these psychic abilities? It's briefly mentioned by the father that their mother had similar abilities and it ended up leading her to suicide but we did not see her or hear enough about her. The detectives really just broke into the house across the street (also not explained well) without probable cause, I mean their only lead was a girl with dreams for God sake. Also the mask and it's different versions was interesting but not explained at all either. It tried to have a positive message but the end felt a little exaggerated and like it tried too hard for a happy ending, or a "bittersweet" ending as the detective described it. Overall a bit frustrating and I am left with way more questions than answers.
Io non ho paura (2003)
One of the most under-rated movies of all time.
With its great plot, this is one of the best foreign films out there. It achieves what can't be done in America with its artistry, openness, sorrow and desire; all while sometimes being very simple. "I'm Not Scared" has convincing characters, a realistic feel, great acting, and is always interesting. Do not ignore seeing this movie! You should not regret watching it in the slightest. It is a movie not just worth seeing, but worth owning in my opinion. It saddens me to know that most people probably have never seen this film or read the book, which encouraged me to write this review. If you are looking for a movie to add to your watchlist, look no further.
