Til døden os skiller (2007)
Really Fun Somewhat Absurdist Comedy
One of my favourite Danish films. The main character is not only average and miserable, but also mean and frequently lying. Being beaten up by his wife when she has her outbursts of anger doesn't help. The way in which the plot develops is far from 'aimless' (as one reviewer has written, so funny...), it is somewhat absurd, yes, but genius and psychologically quote nuanced... What people may not like is that this is very far from a Hollywood style comedy that has to spell it all out and have something spectacular about them. There is nothing spectatular in the plot or the characters, just painful ordinariness and quite a lot of misery, but executed in a masterful and really funnny way. The plot: things getting from bad to worse for the miserable ferry employee and domestic-violence victim, Jan, but he does take things into his own hands, ... or tries to, at least. Characters develop very well, revealed to some depth as you get to know them better through the story, which means that you can start feel sympathy for even the worst of them - but you need not, film doesn't beg for any great sentimentality.
If you want to enjoy a bit odd but ruthlessly honest Danish comedy, something quite different from the worn-out tricks of the comedy blockbuster industry, see this film with a glass of a good IPA.
