The New Legends of Monkey (2018)
Not worth the watch
There are a lot of miss steps that this show makes that doesn't make it worth the watch:
-the dialog is poor
-fighting choreography is mediocre at best
-acting isn't great
I'm a fan of the old novels "Journey to the West" so i was excited to watch this when i found it on Netflix but was sorely disappointed after the first episode. They take a lot of "artistic liberties" that change the core characters, setting, and plot to the point where its not recognizable to the source material at all.
Unfortunately this is what I have come to expect with Netflix exclusives to the point where i have stared to avoid them all together. This show doesn't break from that trend. I am disappointed and don't recommend it
Deadpool (2016)
Just another "Marvel" movie
Before walking into the theater, I was told this movie was hilarious, deserving of an R rating, and one of the best marvel movies of all time. After watching it however, I can safely say that they got 2 of the 3 descriptions correct. The movie definitely deserves the R rating because of all of the nudity, most of the jokes hit their mark, to say it's the best marvel movie is a far cry from the truth.
What made this an average movie boils down to two things, the first being the action, and the second being the CG. When you think of modern action movies, there are a lot of jump cuts of cars exploding, swords flying, guns shooting, and fists punching. Often it will happen so fast that you won't be able to quite make out what's happening half of the time, unfortunately, this has become par for the course. It wouldn't quite be a Deadpool movie without all of that action, it just seems really "caned" and boring where it should have been the opposite because of the character they were working with.
The special effects and CG characters are incredibly disappointing and look as though they were made some time in the early 2000's. This becomes an even greater shame when you think back to the first "Iron Man" movie where the suit still looks really good, and that movie came out in 2008.
At the end of the day, it was an OK watch, I wouldn't recommend seeing it in theaters even though it seems like it would be a perfect "theater movie". I also don't have the slightest drive to see this movie a second time which is becoming a reoccurring theme with most Marvel movies
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Better than the Prequels
I went into this movie expecting another mindless action film that would closer fit into the trend of a Marvel movie rather than a Star Wars. While not devoid of action, I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a healthy balance between plot and mind blowing spectacle.
One thing that stood out for me was the comedic elements thrown in. When compared to "A New Hope", this movie seems a lot more light hearted as opposed to the more serious tone of episode 4. Having said that, there are a couple of spots where Fin does some comedic rambling, I found those bits to be more annoying than funny. Over all I think the comedic elements are a nice touch and makes you appreciate the characters that much more.
The only major thing that I had a problem with was the entire story in general. Again when comparing this movie to "A New Hope" you will notice a lot of similarities. Similar settings, similar characters, similar actions, hell, the entire plot is almost exactly the same. The fact that this movie is just "A New Hope" with new characters and updated visuals doesn't bother me that much when I think about how poor the prequels are. Why fix what ain't broke, right? while I think this was a step in the right direction, I would have like to have seen a little bit more uniqueness.
All in all, this was a great movie. If you are a Star Wars fan, it doesn't matter what I say because you are going to see it anyways, but if you have never seen a Star Wars film, this is a good one to jump into the series.
Xi you: Xiang mo pian (2013)
It's a journey alright
I began watching this movie knowing that it was based off the novel by the same name, however, at the time I had not read the book so I was watching without any preconceived expectations. I for one, enjoyed this movie for what it was and I'm actually kinda surprised at the how far if was willing to go to show the savagery of the demons.
There are really only two things that I didn't particularly care for, the first being the love interest. It felt to me as though the only reason why this sub plot was introduced was to set up jokes for later in the film. Having said that, the jokes are actually kind of funny at parts, they just feel out of place. My second complaint is with the c.g. To me it looks a little goofy and clean, given the setting. It already started to feel dated by the time I got around to watching this movie. Those are just minor flaws and it was an over all enjoyable movie.
At the time of writing this review, I am good portion through the novel. Really the only similarities that this movie shares with the book are the names of the characters. This doesn't bug me as much as I would think that it would, in fact, it has made reading the book more enjoyable.
If you have the time and you are interested, you wont be disappointed. As well, if you enjoyed the movie, I also recommend reading the book.
Tonari no Totoro (1988)
Left Underwhelmed
The animation style is what you would expect from Studio Ghibli, which I really enjoy. This movie is meant to be a sort of slice of life film, which I don't mind either. The main two characters have enjoyable personalities as well. This brings us to why the 5/10.
To be plain and simple, I found the movie extremely boring. Watching a movie such as Spirited Away or Kiki's Delivery Service, you will notice that they're rather relaxing and aren't paced that fast but you knew the movie was building to something. That is one of the major reasons why I like Ghibli films and what I was expecting again with My Neighbor Totoro. Unfortunately that was not the case and I was left wondering when the movie was going to climax or what adversity the characters are going to face.
I was left disappointed that the characters that i started to like during the beginning of the film never really changed or learned some sort of lesson. At the end of the day, I was left underwhelmed especially since I have heard nothing but good things about this movie from anyone who mentions it.
