The Dark Knight (2008)
Christopher Nolan is simply an agent of perfection in superhero filmmaking
I come from a region where commercial movies have been so dominant over the years that most people now judge films on how good the item songs were. Even in Hollywood, the film industry has for long been dominated by cheap parlor tricks and flicks. To see a movie of such utter artistry, class and creativity has thus been long awaited for me.
This is a superhero fiction which seems real, to say the least. Unlike most movies of its genre, The Dark Knight does not end in a 'fistfight' between the hero and the villain but turns into a battle between the dual nature of mankind. Every camera angle, every single word of each character, every beat of the background music, every expression of each actor, every twist in the storyline speaks on its own. The storyline is spectacular. Right from the first scene, the movie focuses on the brutality of the joker, the simple joy he feels by bringing about chaos and destruction. The joker will forever be the greatest villain of all time. He is a man of mysterious background, questionable character and by his own accord, an agent of chaos.
The acting, direction and screenplay of this movie is pure artistry. Christopher Nolan does not rely on high tech special effects but exhibits a high degree of intelligence on each of his films. Christian Bale has been very rightly referred to as the real Batman, by many. And spare a thought for the great Heath Ledger who played out each scene while playing the highly complex role of the joker to absolute and absolute perfection. The Dark knight, is, by its own right, the Everest of superhero films
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
In what sort of extra terrestrial universe is this a good film???
Let me get something straight, I like movies which contain a good storyline, unpredictable plot twists, memorable dialogues and well executed direction and acting. And to be frank this movie had none of those. It was just a showcase of high- tech, expensive but pointlessly executed special effects filled with extremely boring clichés, petty thrills and cheap attempts to draw big crowds. Movies like this might be considered by some people as 'entertaining' but where is the class in it?
The acting is just awful, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was used as an eye candy but nothing else. Shia Lebeouf did what he did in the first two movies , bored us to death. His character is flat as usual and the acting was disappointing to say the least.
Now, coming to the context of the plot , there are no twists, no adrenaline-rushing action scenes, no depth in the storyline. The only thing that might be considered even remotely close to "good" in this huge mess is the work done by the special effects team. They managed to make some of the scenes pretty believable and realistic. And finally, how on earth did the writers manage to create plot holes in this rather simple plot? I mean how can machines survive for years in a metal corrosive surface like that of the moon? There were also other plot holes which I spotted but I'd have to spoil the story to point them out. Anyway, with due respect to Michael Bay and all who were involved in the making of this film, I'd like to request them to change their extremely commercial approach to filmmaking and create movies by thinking out of the box like Quentin Tarantino and especially Christopher Nolan.
The Net 2.0 (2006)
a predictable thriller but an enjoyable film
A few days ago, when I watched the movie I had very low expectations in the beginning. And do not get me wrong, this movie certainly is not a timeless masterpiece. The storyline is pretty similar to its prequel but I am going to try and ignore that fact. There are some interesting plot twists in the storyline but if you are used to watching action thrillers, you might actually find them pretty predictable.
The acting isn't actually all that bad, and the location of the shooting being Istanbul in Turkey, the scenes are rather interesting to watch. The direction and picture quality was mediocre at best, but the plot being well paced, makes us ignore these limitations to a certain extent. I would like to avoid giving away any sort of spoilers for those who have not yet watched the film yet but it would suffice to say that if computers aren't really your thing, you might as well avoid this film. And to come to the point of the cast, I certainly welcome the decision to add some Turkish actors in the mix. In my honest opinion, they did help to add some much needed freshness to this otherwise rather placid film.
All in all, this movie might not be in the same level as the matrix films (maybe not even close) but if you watch the film having low expectations in mind, I can guarantee that you will not get bored.
