The Dark Crystal (1982)
Nostalgia
Every time I watch this movie it brings back nostalgia. But I have to admit there are some scary moments in it. Like stripping the Chamberlain, the Skeksies (which are creepy but awesome at the same time), podlings being turned into zombies, death, the Garthim. It was so brilliant for the time though. 80's movies like this, Labyrinth and NeverEnding Story are just so fun to watch. This movie is not for everyone but it is a great fantasy movie if you just give it a chance. The characters are interesting and you really start to root for Jen and Kyra to save the world and join the shard with the dark crystal.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Strange As Always
This is truly a very strange movie to behold. You have to watch this more than once to actually understand certain things. And then I recommend watching it again just to see if you missed anything. But then again, that's David Lynch for you. A master of the strange and intriguing. That's why I loved Twin Peaks so much. Sure this movie makes your brain hurt sometimes and sure there are things that aren't going to make sense what so ever. But that's what makes it good. And I love that my little piece of Canada is mentioned in this. Naomi Watts' character Betty says "I just came here from Deep River, Ontario, and now I'm in this... dream place. You can imagine how I feel." Deep River is mentioned in a David Lynch movie. Are you kidding me? That is so awesome because Deep River is so awesome. I was born and raised there and it gives me great pride. That is so cool. Anyways, just go out and watch this movie. If you want the weird and the different, then this is the movie for you. Heck, watch any of David Lynch's movies.
Deep River: The Island (2009)
Surreal....
What little I have seen of this is truly strange to me. I am a Deep Riverite, born and raised, and it's surreal to me to see my little piece of Canada in a zombie movie. Seeing places I know quite well, including my mom's store. Places that I grew up around every day. I don't know any of the actors as far as I know but now I'm interested to see the whole thing just to see my town immortalized on film. People should make more movies there because it is such a beautiful place. We have a great downtown core as well as a stunning boardwalk off of the Ottawa River. Go Deep River, Go! I hope that this movie does my town justice is all that I'm saying.
