CODA (2021)
A special warm hearted film
I can say loudly enough what a sweet, gentle, honest film this is. Amazingly you can see how it is going to go from a mile away but it does not matter. That is because the story is so sincere. It is extremely funny and will also touch your heart so much that the tears will start to fall even if you don't want them to.
Do not let this movie slip by. You will not be sorry giving it your time.
Jolt (2021)
Nice Balance of Action and Comedy
This is a fun stylish action movie with a nice sprinkle of comedy throughout. Kate Beckinsale does a fine job as an action "hero". You can't help rooting for her. She is funny, sarcastic and extremely violent but just wants normalcy in her life. But normalcy does not come easy.
Jolt is also an economical 1 hour 30 minutes that does not lag at any point. Sit back and enjoy this surprise movie. It is well worth the ride all the way to the end.
Without Remorse (2021)
This is a huge miss
Very poor. Michael B. Jordan just lowered his stock as an action hero. What were they thinking when they looked at the final cut. The dialog is infantile. The acting is lifeless. There are action sequences that are beyond unlikely and just plain unbelievable. We all want to suspend belief when watching an action movie, that is why they are fun. But not this case. Just plain dumb wins out.
Moxie (2021)
Too light for big issues?
This film attempts to tackle some big issues such as bullying and sexual assault. However, it tries to do it with a level of lightness that does not fully work. Should it have been a more serious film? That is a question that needs to be answered by those who watch it. But sometimes serious subjects need to be presented in a more serious fashion. The age group that this is targeted at can take it because they are on the front lines of these issues. The portrayal of strong young adults with a social conscience is never a bad thing. That is what makes it a movie to watch and not totally dismiss.
Downton Abbey (2019)
Made for fans
There is not much to say about Downton Abbey the movie. It is made specifically for fans of the TV show. All the charm of the show is there, beautiful locations, costume design that is second to none and of course all of the characters return. As a stand alone movie the story is not great but as a fan of the show (which is why you are probably watching it) you will be satisfied. It's like getting together with an old friend and enjoying a nice afternoon or evening together.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Length is not the problem
Yes it is 4 hours long. That is not the problem. If something is good, 4 hours is an easy binge. This superhero movie is just bad making the 4 hours a chore. It is hard to tell if the stiff acting is caused by poor direction or the poor writing or that many in the cast are just poor actors. Even a fine actress like Amy Adams feels like she is just going through the motions.
All the Justice League turns out to be is a vessel for action sequences with cliche dialog and superhero poses to fill in the gaps.
The Haunting (1963)
A good old fashioned ghost story
This is a good old fashioned ghost story made by a master director. It is done in beautiful black and white which adds to the mood. There is no gore, no violence. It is purely based on you buying into the premise of the haunted house and the haunting of the minds of the people who are investigating the ghostly phenomenon in the house.
Mulan (2020)
Pretty but dull
Everything technical in Mulan is well done. Beautiful Cinematography, excellent set design, great costumes and exciting action scenes. What took me out of the movie was the awful acting. It was stiff and bland. The script did not help either. Is it awful? No, because it is so nice to look at. It just missed on what may be the most important part of a movie, caring about the characters because they were two dimensional.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
A worthy watch
I went in with very low expectations and came out really enjoying this story. Maybe those who disliked it never had pain in their lives caused by family dysfunction and economic insecurity. Elegy nailed that pain and confusion and still left room for hope. Glen Close and Amy Adams were outstanding.
