Delgo (2008)
Enjoyable, unique visual style, archetypal plot, but fun
This movie was an enjoyable archetypal hero story that used a wholly creative new style of animation that I have not seen before creating a very strong feel to the film. The visuals were absolutely vivid. Fast paced, sometimes to its own detriment, this movie does a great job of keeping the story moving but often short changes some details that could lead to stronger character development. However if this movie in fact is a part of a trilogy as has been proposed, then this is a strong start setting the stage for more complex character development and even greater involvement in this fantasy world that clearly had a lot of thought and depth to it. I liked it. The characters each grew and evolved throughout the film. Even if only slightly, the changes were noticeable. The all-star cast lends charisma and charm to the characters. I felt immersed in their alien world. I felt that the characters were both real and grounded. They didn't consist of airy nothingness like the characters in so many created worlds. It was an interesting story based on political mistrust, fear, diversity, misunderstanding, and love. It was a movie that we can relate to and that can inspire. Go see it. More than anything this movie suffered from a total lack of an advertising campaign. With no advertisement it is no surprise that this movie had such a poor start.
Eragon (2006)
A broad reaching epic adventure
This movie is a fantastic voyage through an ordinary life turned to something epic. The actors are thoroughly immersed in their roles. The graphics look and feel real. The story is engaging. And you cant help but get the overwhelming desire to jump into the fray and fight along side the heroes. Though the genre has seen similar stories throughout history this movie reinvents it in a new and exciting way with some of the most visually stunning imagery, beautiful story, tremendous heart, and pervasive beauty. If you like movies where an ordinary person becomes a legend in the vein of dragonheart, the lord of the rings, and even star wars, you will love this film. And Jeremy irons and sienna guillory don't hurt either.
Running Scared (2006)
Whoa!
Leaving me with the feeling of being lost in the woods and trying to find a way out; this movie ROCKED! Definitely having similarities with the movie JUDGEMENT NIGHT with a Tarantino flair, this movie was far better. Character development, intricate and complicated plot, brutal action (though I still can't abide the fact that a shotgun WILL NOT make you fly back 6 feet), and believable, albeit unusual, real life circumstances made this movie a total seat grabber.
Though some of the in-scene activities were predictable, this movie was one of the few movies that had me completely bewildered. I had no idea where this movie was going from once scene to the next. A rare and pleasant surprise.
The overall sense of this film was that of a Brother's Grimm fairy tale (not the Disney version) taking place in a low class suburb of New Jersey. I was completely creeped out, thrilled, and surprised, and on more than one occasion could not keep myself from cheering for the bold actions of the protagonists.
Sweet movie, and a must see for those who can handle its content.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
Brilliant!
This movie was smart, fun, and well acted. The plot developed nicely and Angelina and Brad played their respective characters with considerable aplomb. The fact that both leads went through combat and tactics training by a former member of SEAL Teams 3 and 6 definitely showed through. Though there was a moment or two where I had to suspend disbelief, the rest of the movie was filled with practical and possible (very important in my opinion) action and stunts. Additional backstory for the two leads would have been nice but ultimately was unnecessary and the movie ends at the high point without a long superfluous falling action and the Pitt - Jolie dynamic was both believable and filled with understated comedy. Taken as a whole this movie was Fantastic and contains the sexiest love scene in the history of movie making.
