Flushed Away (2006)
Hysterical
I thought that this movie was so funny. There is so much laugh-out-loud humor as well as a subtler humor running through it.
Quick synopsis: Roddy, a pet rat, is left home alone while his family goes on vacation. Sid, a sewer rat, gets caught in an updraft and arrives in Roddy's house. He quickly takes over and ends up flushing Roddy down the toilet where he discovers a complete rat city in the sewers. As he is searching for a way home, he meets Rita, a rat who runs a river boat, and gets caught in her run from The Toad.
If you like Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, you will love it.
It is wacky and silly, but great. The slugs are roll in the aisle funny and the French frogs are also very funny. Be sure to watch for a cameo by Wolverine's costume and another from "Nemo".
The voice artists are great at capturing their characters and the animation is great. It is a blend of claymation and computers and they do it very well.
Although it has a few elements of gross humor, the rest is kid-friendly and clean. There is also a whole level of humor running through the movie that the parents will enjoy even if the kids don't get it.
Although it is not a must-see in the theater, it is definitely worth seeing.
Relative Chaos (2006)
Very Cute
Every year the Gilbert family, parents Will and Carol and their kids, Gil, Lil, and Dil, get together and the kids compete for the Gilbert Cup. Dil has never won in the 25 years that they have been doing this, but this year is looking up. He is a successful lawyer, has a great apartment, a new car, and a new girlfriend. After his girlfriend, Katherine, invites herself along, he finds himself swept up in the competition. As he gets more annoyed with his family and Katherine, he runs into his childhood friend, April.
I thought this movie was pretty cute. Being a TV movie, it doesn't get the length needed to expand on the characters and plot, but the cast does a great job. Christopher Gorham as Dil perfectly balances a sweet boy-next-door cuteness with a kind of goofy sexiness. Charisma Carpenter as Katherine is wonderfully self-centered and aggressive. Terry Bradshaw as Will and Fiona Reed as Carol are great as the loving and misguided parents. Nicholas Brendan as Gil is good as the very competitive oldest brother and Jennifer Robertson is good as the sister with her own secrets. My favorite character was April, played wonderfully by Mayko Nguyen. She totally captured April's feelings for Dil and her pride and confidence in him as well as her sense of humor and playfulness.
I think that the movie is definitely worth the time and it is a great family movie.
From Justin to Kelly (2003)
If you like cheesy musicals, this is for you!
This movie was just a fun time full of happy people and upbeat music. All of the songs were catchy, if not particularly memorable. The characters were fun and natural. You can see people you know in them, even if you have never experienced a situation such as there's. While it is aimed more for a adolescent audience, older people will enjoy it if they go into it with an open mind, recognizing the corny factor. I don't understand everyone who thinks that in order for a movie to be enjoyable it must have some deep plot line. Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini are very likable and fun. And the supporting cast is surprisingly good. This movie is in the spirit of Anchors Aweigh and Summerstock. If you enjoy happy, carefree movies, you will most likely enjoy this movie.
