Money Power Respect (2006)
Good job!
I am a filmmaker and I see quite a few films and read reviews. I rented this film despite some of the comments made by others on this site. After viewing the film I wondered whether or not people rent movies so they can trash them to feel better about themselves.
Truthfulness is important in story telling and I think this film is on the mark in that regard. This was written by someone who is obviously familiar with the world he writes about. The same cannot be said for films that many of us pay to see at the theater. The actors were inexperienced as indicated by the director in the commentary. The cinematography was good although some people may question why it was not "covered" a little more but if you watch the director's interview you learn that the shooting budget was 10,000 and they did not have control of all locations. Solid debut. I look forward to seeing more from this director.
Premium (2006)
Excellent job by all
I'm a filmmaker myself and I see quite a few films. Premium was one of the most enjoyable and well done films I've seen on the festival circuit this year. Part of the genius is the direction. Pete Chatmon confidently lets this perfectly cast group of actors perform without trying to use any tricks to make the story more interesting or feel like a studio project. Zoe Saldana was excellent as usual but I was pleasantly surprised by the way the lead actor, Dorian Missick was able to handle himself in a cast that includes Hill Harper and Frankie Faison. Something is wrong if Missick does not get more leading roles. I did some research and discovered that the writer/director took his time and developed the script over a number of years. It shows. This is a film that any demographic group would enjoy. I expect to see it in THEATERS early next year.
In Your Eyes (2004)
Nice debut
I rented the movie a few nights ago and watched it with my wife. The relationship between the main characters was nicely developed so that the events that occur in the final act actually mean something. Good story which is the most important element to me. Very enjoyable. Good use of the City of Oxnard. it was good to see Michael DeLorenzo again . I haven't really seen him since his days on Ny Undercover. I think he was on a SHOWTIME series but that was a few years ago. I did a little research and discovered that this was a story based on the writer- directors own experience growing up.I look forward to seeing his next film.
