Game of Thrones: The Children (2014)
A worthy final for the best season so far.
All expectations met: Just brilliant! The presentation of season 4 was more than nice - it never could have been done better than this in any movies (trilogy or similar). The development of the new core characters is pictured in a very nice manner - the acting was more than fantastic - looking so forward for season 5 and beyond. I would wish the world of Ice and Fire would not end at all! The atmosphere in all circumstances was great. I just would wish we would have seen more details rather than going a little rushed through the book(s). Anyway hands down it was the most amazing season so far, very close to GRRM's Song of Ice and Fire. If you'd say Season 1-3 was good - season 4 will just amaze you - especially with "The Children" as its final. Keep up the good work HBO and the GOT team!
Game of Thrones: The Mountain and the Viper (2014)
Episode of Tyrion's trail
Firstly I got to say that this episode wraps up so much book content I have not witnessed before in any GoT episodes. My first impression yesterday was: "Hey that's too fast!", as there is even a good bunch of content of Dance of the Dragons pictured in it. However almost every scene of development of any of the main characters was extremely well played and covered the content in a brilliant way.
Apart of the fight of Tyrion's trail, the best acting performance was Sansa's testimony showing Littlefinger how ~truth~ not only lies or plain excuses can move rocks and obstacles in gaining ~trust~ in dangerous situations. While this scene and also the scene with the moon door (last episode) is not 100% in line with the books - Where is the Marillion the singer who was held "responsible" for Lysa's death in the books? - it displayed the situation with identical outcome and for me was the best acting performance of Sophie Turner since episode 3.
I loved the scene with Tyrion and Jamie (in comparison to other reviewers) sitting before the trail and chatting about their cousin, the relentless beetle smasher. I personally believe that exactly these scenes make watching GoT very enjoyable as there is room for interpretation and metaphors about how cruel the world is or can be and moreover how personal likes or dislikes could cause thousands of deaths.
I am really sad to see Pedro Pascal as Red Viper of Drone being out of Game of Thrones now, however the actor did a fabulous job in picturing the character. I will watch out for him in other movies and can say that I love his accent also. I agree that the fight was a little short as final for the actor, as in particular Pedro Pascal's performance was awesome! For the fight and prior episodes I am sad to see 3 actors for "the mountain" though his last actor (I do hard spelling his name) was I think the best choice. It would have been good to have him on board since season 1.
Though I am a little sad that the conquest of Moat Calin was only shown as a short version similar to the conquest of Meereen earlier.
I am under the impression that maybe the directors were not sure, whether GoT can survive over Season 4. This makes me believe that Season 4 should have covered as much character development of the current book content as possible.
Anyhow, it was a wonderful episode with extremely well acting performance! This series is making me even more eager to wait for the new book than the books would have done it themselves.
Game of Thrones: The Laws of Gods and Men (2014)
Peter Dinklage's most impressive 4 minutes.
I don't have time to write much about this episode. However I loved it! One thing to remember though: The three last minutes of this episode was rhetorically and emotionally the best actors performance I have seen in years. These moments will make Peter Dinklage very famous! Nothing more to say apart that this actor will have a prosperous future, if he can stand on this level of performance. Not only his strength of speech, also his mimic and the passion of showing emotions was fascinating. If I have to imagine that this acting performance was shown in a series... my god... lots of actors still have to train so much in movies. 10 thumbs up!
Game of Thrones: First of His Name (2014)
Yet to see the future?
Lots of answers in one episode. Lots of emotional changes inside the characters. In my point of view I saw:
*Arya to try to split from the hound. Yet not strong enough, yet full of wrath. However the storyline keeps frozen, like in the books and it should be like that.
*Littlefinger / Sansa / Lysa: Lysa seems to me as one of the most distasteful characters (the actress is bringing her up in a fantastic way) in the world of Westeros. Her character made her kill her former husband. Her son Robin is a psychopath, if you look what he did with his gift. The scene with Sansa lying in her bed and hearing Lysa's love screams, which is absolutely identical to the storyline in the books, shows Sansa's new desperation. For Sansa it seems to have entered a new hell where absolutely no one can be trusted, if you see the conversation with Lysa and Sansa afterward. It seems to me that the directors of GoT shortened this story of the books to a reasonable degree. This short plot also shows that Sansa's character is about to change.
*Tommen as new king, who looks like a victim for the future as he will be "controlled" by all forces surrounding him.
*Margaery Tyrell the queen of many, who allies in a pact with vicious Cercei.
*Dany sticking to "rule" instead of conquest - sadly also her most exciting journey now ended. Actually I was sad that the takeover of Meereen was just presented in little 10 minutes. It was ~far~ more exciting in the books.
*Brienne and Pod on their start to travel - and yes it will be a ~long~ one and yes unfortunately I didn't enjoy their plot of loyalty, faith and honor in the books.
* The development in the north - Jon Snow attacking. Nothing else as expected.
As mentioned in earlier reviews I see this episode as turning point of GoT. It will be questionable whether the future plot of the books with the main characters of the future (like Brienne, Sam, Bran, Lysa, the Boltons etc.) can be presented in the fashion they did it with season 1 - 4.5.
My point here is that the main actors of seasons 1 - 4.5 key characters which were Eddard Stark, Cat Stark, Rob Stark, Joffrey Baratheon, Khal Drogo, Tywin Lannister, Shae, Varys, Robert Baratheon, the Greyjoys and even Ranley Baratheon did such a great performance that the new "setup" will have a very very hard time to match ~their~ performance. With the current actors I don't expect it as possible. I see this like a theater where the actors are changing, yet still continue to play the same story. It will be tough for the directors to get the future of the "Song of Ice and Fire" as attractive as its past. To be fair the actors of Sam, Brienne, Lysa, Ramsey, Pod might not have the "attraction" of the crew before. However I will keep watching and I hope for the best after Tyrion's trail.
Yet again the past got covered up, while the future just started.
For me still this episode deserves a top star rating!
Game of Thrones: Two Swords (2014)
Two Swords - Two Atmospheres?
Personally I didn't expect too much for the new season start, as in the books it is rather a long winding role play before the Purple Wedding. However I loved to see the fact how the character of the main actors is developing and changing. The acting was absolutely fantastic in my opinion. I was impressed after viewing the first episode, because I found a parallel in between the title "Two Swords" (and the actual forging of them) and the storyline of this episode. Don't know whether this was just making up in my mind or whether the author intended to do this:
Two Swords - Two Atmospheres
1. Wrath - Anger - Hate: The Hound, Arya, Daenerys, Oberyn, Mance Rayder, The Wildlings
2. Desperation - Sadness - Pride: Jaime Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow, Shae, Tyrion
Can't wait for more!
2 thumbs up!
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
What a disastrous crap movie!
I am very sorry I really looked forward to see this movie today, however whatever the director there had in mind is just shocking and doesn't even have to do the slightest with a "good" horror movie. The setting basically is like in many horror movies, the one dies behind the other in the survival chain of the characters. There was no special ideas behind their deaths, just pure slaughter in the darkness. Any old school Nightmare on Elm Streets movie was more inspiring. Even the acting wasn't good at all. (until now this movie would get a 4 from me) What makes it even worse is the end. To have a total chaos with a variety of creatures below the house next to the end of the world scenario is just plain uninspiring. To have a ritual to stop the gods coming while having a whole army already killed during this doesn't make sense either. I am very sorry but it was the worst movie I have seen 2013. Maybe even the actors cannot do much for this, however really don't want to see more. How can it be rated with 7,1??
Limitless (2011)
Fun movie
The setup really surprised me in a very positive way. I just would have expected a different ending as it remains pretty much open whether Eddie will get off the drug at any rate or just mass-produces it in own laboratories. Neither unclear remains the question about Melissa's future. Yes, she got away with it, however her body took a lot of consequence there. It would have been nice to see a little more of her in the end. De Niro as Carl van Loon was absolutely enjoyable, he performed really well. At the first glance I didn't expect anything while watching the movie, however the story shows you all kinds of ways to see the world out of different views. The turning point once Eddie was at the balcony and the attack of Gennady was the best scene in the movie.
Game of Thrones: Second Sons (2013)
Tension
I loved this episode, especially if you see the tension coming up in between the house Tyrell and Lannister. The series shows precisely how the future plots will develop, giving evidence about it. Kind of excited to look forward to the Tyrell - Lannister marriages now. I also love the facts that they brought up Yunkai in particular, as it has been speculated that it won't be shown in the series. Also surprising is that Gendry takes over the role of Eldric completely, I just wonder whether Davros now will be freed and how this story will develop in the series. The "three" false kings scene with Melisandre was one of my favorites in the whole episode. Good work! Can't wait for more.
