Absentia (2017–2020)
6/10
An ultimately unsatisfying thriller
22 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Absentia is not a 1/10. It's also not a 10/10. I gave it a 6 for creating genuine tension even amidst the bad writing and incoherent plot features. The series tells the tale of a former FBI agent on the run from false accusations after being held captive and declared dead for 6 years. Clear My Name (see TV Tropes for an explanation) has always been a fraught theme for me. I often find these plots maddening and unsatisfying as they create unnecessary stupidity in the ancillary characters in order to work. Absentia was no exception. This series employed every bad cliche of the Clear My Name genre. From absurd contrivances to illogical decision making, the characters in this series bumble their way to an ending as predictable as the sunrise. She Clears Her Name. You don't necessarily need to avoid this series, but don't clear your schedule and settle in with the popcorn either.
