Deadwood (2004–2006)

Unfocused show, plenty of filler
11 April 2024
This show has a way higher rating than what I'd say it deserves. It's not horrible, not good - but very, very average. There are some good scenes scattered throughout the show, but man does it like to drag on, and on, and on, to extend the episode air times. Some characters feel like there was no real though put into creating them. Jane, for example. Even usually good Olyphant is performing quite unconvincingly, like he didn't really care about the show. McShane is usually okay, but the whole show gives me the feeling that not a single actor had enough material to use for a great performance, so they tend to overact in a way that drags down the whole show, even when there's a better scene going.

I watched it, because I kept hearing great things about it, and I remembered seeing it on the TV back in the day. Kept waiting that something great would happen with the writing, but it never really happens. I don't hate slow-developing shows, but then the story needs to be really good, and rich. Deadwood just doesn't have that. This is just a mess, consisting of some good, some awful, and a ton of mediocre parts. Wanted to experience a solid western, but this is just frustrating to watch. So, my recommendation: Yellowstone's spin-off 1883 is a way better show from about the same era, go watch that. You will save plenty of time, as that show is much shorter. Condensed, but very good show. 1883 is a Western done right.

Seems alright, except for the daughter
24 July 2023
Like many others have mentioned, the daughter is very, very, VERY annoying. I don't think the actress was a good choice, she doesn't play the part well. Please replace the actress at least. I like the idea of having a daughter character around, but that requires a likeable actress. What we got so far, feels very hollow and just generally annoying, not in a way that'd be a sign of an outstanding performance.

But otherwise, show seems interesting enough. Love Holbrook's performance as the villain so far, really good! However, he's not at the level of the original show's Boyd Crowder, at least not yet after seeing just two episodes. Raylan is still as great as he ever was, Olyphant pull this character off really well. Like the original show never ended.

There's always a but, and this is it. Writing isn't as captivating as the original had it. Feels like a sloppier job, not nearly as focused, or detailed even? I don't know a better word for it, but it feels like there's something lacking that the original had from the very first moment.

This one has a lot of room to grow, which I hope happens. I've been waiting for this show ever since it was rumored, so far the highest rating I could give it would be 7/10. Not bad, not amazing. But like I said, seems interesting. Production values seem to be on point, sounds and looks good. Definitely has potential to become a great show.

Woke

This current trend of stuffing wokeness down our throats forcefully is alarming. It has no place in this show, doesn't fit at all. Show is going downhill very fast.

Straight-up bad!
3 June 2022
Wow, just wow. This movie was a complete waste of time. I was expecting it to slowly build it up for the ending, but NO. Sat through the whole thing, to see... That. Sloppy writing, horribly directed, bad pacing - real amateur hour. Damn shame for McDonough, though. Man can act really well, and at times I saw he tried, but the writing just wasn't there to make it work.

I suggest you skip this one, watch something else.

Waste of time, sadly
19 April 2022
Very disappointing movie. The trailer looked very promising, and had me fooled - I was seriously excited to see the whole movie! So when I started to watch it, the slow pace of the beginning had me thinking, "maybe it gets better soon"... But it never did. First hour felt like over two, which genuinely confused me.

I like the darker theme of this, but the issue is how it's executed. Most of the actors felt very uninterested to pull off a decent performance, and the whole script overall felt unfocused.

I highly recommend skipping this one, and watching The Dark Knight instead. That one kept me on the edge of my seat during its whole length - it's a fantastic movie. This new movie... Not good; overly long, boring, and the unfocused script makes it a bad experience - major disappointment.

Seems promising!
17 February 2022
After the Tariq-focused Power spin-off, I was worried that these all would be horrible. This one seems quite good, nothing ground-breaking - but exactly what I was looking for. Sikora performs well, this is a very suitable role for him. So far I've seen two episodes, worthy of 7.5 out of 10 - I round up to 8.

I also agree with others who mentioned it; I hope Tariq character does not show up in this one.

EDIT: After more episodes... Yeah, I like this! It's over the top and not exactly original, but it's very, very entertaining. This is what I expected from this, and so far the series delivers.

Entertaining show
2 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Needed something to watch and this show came up. Didn't expect it to be THIS good, but after all I do find Scary Movies and such movies entertaining. This isn't scary, but it sure is ridiculously over the top at times in a funny way and I really like it. 80's music also fits well!

Casting is mostly spot-on. One, probably stupid thing, that is annoying me is how Skyler Samuels pronounces 'something' as 'somethink'. Also most actors say 'other THEN' instead 'other than'... A very small, but irritating thing for me. Otherwise, it's a nice show and I hope it gets many seasons.

True masterpiece!
23 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't have any high expectations for this movie - but as I do love Pulp Fiction really much and while this is different, I'm going to admit that this is even better. I never saw that happening. I thought that almost 3 hours of a movie like this (the plot mainly didn't sound that interesting) would be just boring, but because of the really strong cast I decided to watch it. And oh boy, was it worth it!

It first started really slow and reminded me of 'The Revenant' quite a lot at times. But this movie does everything so damn well that you lose track of time and just want the story just keep going. I honestly didn't expect this caliber of first-class performances from _everybody_. It just kept me pondering who I should hate or root for. Samuel, Goggins and everyone else really brought the characters alive and the acting was incredibly strong. All in all, to me this movie is amazing. Nothing to complaint about whatsoever, only the highest recommendation.

Really good!
13 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
One of my current favorite TV-shows. Mostly amazing acting, well- written action and makes you want more after each episode. Only character I've really disliked so far is the one played by Jada Pinkett Smith.

Season 1 was still great and all season 2 episodes I've seen have been better and better. Michael Chiklis finally shows he can still act incredibly well (I'm a huge The Shield-fan) and I just can't wait to see the rest of the season.

So, the show is well-written, well-acted and well-directed - and really entertaining! The quality is simply top-notch. The show makes you feel like you are in Gotham watching the action live. Not too many shows can make that happen, or at least I haven't seen that happening.

Over-hyped - too long for what it is
21 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I had really high expectations for this movie. I like Leo's movies and he's a great actor, but somehow this movie just wasn't that good. No idea why, but I couldn't help but feel like the crew wasn't 100 % present while making this. Really impressive scenery and a few nice, well executed scenes (the bear-scene was amazing!... That's about it. I need to say that Tom Hardy was a big disappointment this time - he kept mixing up his accents and was also a bit hard to hear properly, but that's probably intentional. In a movie that is this big, the accent-thing surprises and makes the whole thing seem unnecessary amateurish.

This movie really had the chance of being a true gem, but feels nothing else than a rip-off. I would like to get my money and wasted time back now, please.

Better than expected, but wrong casting
28 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the T1 and T2 a few weeks before I saw this. This is... Okay, I'd say. I personally hate Jason Clarke, but I guess he did "okay" on this one. Jai Courtney disappointed me scene after scene - why he was chosen for a huge role? Oh well, the same goes for many actors on this movie, but still I found it to be entertaining. I never expected it to be another T1 or T2, not even T3... But it wasn't one of those movies I just couldn't watch to the end. I even liked more than hated it.

I liked seeing the familiar scenes from first Terminators. Only if the actors were the originals as well or even better ones. Arnold delivered and even funny at some parts, but maybe this movie should have used more of him to it's advantage. Animations were done well, you have to watch pretty closely easily tell that it wasn't the original young Arnold. Very impressive, though.

More Terminator, please - but with quality casting (+ Arnold, of course - he's still far away from being too old for this). This movie didn't fully deliver what I was waiting for all these years, but I'll watch it again... Maybe. It had potential for so much more! Let's hope this isn't how the franchise ends.

Really overrated show
1 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This show has been recommended all over the Internet, which is the main reason I started to watch it and have watched every episode out. It does have some well-known actors, which was a promising thing and I thought it could deserve the 8/10 rating it has. But the thing is, it really is full of clichés and over-the-top-nonsense-drama.

One of the biggest problems is the messy story - it just goes in every direction and while it's not even too hard to follow, just doesn't make ANY sense. It's (randomly) entertaining, but sadly made of clichés following clichés.

The next bad thing about the show is the fact that Paula Malcomson can't decide which accent to use. It really drives me crazy when she first speaks using the American-like accent and then she slips out to use her original accent - and sometimes they happen to mix between sentences! This happens way too often (in every episode) and makes her performance look amateurish. I think she was much better on Sons Of Anarchy.

Not all characters are completely terrible, I like Terry and a few others like Avi. I hate the fact that this makes really good actors look really bad. This will be the last season I'll watch as obviously it's not going to get any better. It had the chance to be really good, but in reality it's nowhere near worth the hype.
