I Feel Pretty (2018)
Wanted to like it...
... but the premise is off. I thought Schumer would play someone who suddenly, after a traumatic brain injury, becomes convinced she, as she actually is, is beautiful, which would have been an opportunity for Schumer to riff on ridiculous standards of beauty and the need for self-confidence. Instead, she becomes convinced that her appearance has completely changed, which throws away all the potential.
Schumer is still fun to watch, but this movie could have been much better. I think the screenwriters, Kohn and Silverstein, are to blame, but one wonders how anyone ever thought this was a good idea.
Vinil Verde (2004)
Anyone know the "Green Gloves" tale?
I'm trying to find the Russian tale this was based on, but no luck. Anyone have a lead?
L'attesa (2015)
haunting but...
This is a haunting movie, but I think it could have used a tad more plot. Even Binoche's genius for ambiguous facial expressions strains to paper over deficiencies in the story.
I was intrigued to see that it was based on a Pirandello play, but "based" is too strong - it's at best inspired by "La vita che ti diedi", and from what I can tell (I'm not fluent in Italian) the movie omits most of the play's boldest psychological points.
Gisaengchung (2019)
good, not great
This is an entertaining movie, but count me among those mystified by the hypr it's generated.
1. It presents the Parks more synpathetically than the Kims. I suspect the rich will take more inspiration from this movie than the poor, and "Parasites" sure seems like a call to arms by billionaires.
2. As someone else pointed out, at the start of the movie the Kims can't even fold pizza boxes, but a few days later they're suddenly geniuses.
3. Shouldn't the first chauffeur have turned up in the bomb shelter as the son of the first housekeeper? An opportunity to reinfoce the theme that was carelessly missed by the screenwriters.
