The Constant Gardener (2005)
Lefties will love this one.
This is a mildly entertaining piece of fiction which takes some above average mental focus to keep up with the twisting plot and names and faces of the characters. Those of the liberal-left will want to use this movie as a recruitment tool. It drives home the premise of the evil nature of big corporations and the governments that support them. If you believe that scientists have invented light bulbs that can burn for 100 years but evil corporations have suppressed them, then you will love this movie. Another "vast right-wing conspiracy" is exposed by an impassioned Tess, the heroine of this flick. Tess would make a great candidate for a high public office, such as President. Too bad she was British and fictional.
Coming Home (1978)
Very good movie, but great propaganda film for war protesters
I loved the movie. It is, however, just a movie. It is entertaining and thought provoking, but it is just a movie. It is fiction. It is make believe. I know that many will view it and think it represents the truth about the times. It is ,however, shamefully slanted to a war protester's point of view. All sympathy goes to the victims (Voight, Fonda, et. al.). Anyone associated with supporting the war in the movie (Dern, the Officers) are unlikeable and/or shallow. Dern does a good job of coming across like a jerk in nearly every scene. Fonda, the ultimate war protester in real life, was tremendous as the innocent yet sexy wife of Dern. She betrayed him, yet is depicted as the sympathetic victim and tragic heroine. Hollywood has a great talent for putting together movies like this and making gullible viewers believe it is a truthful documentary of the times. On another level, I applaud the selection of music in this fictional account of the 70's. It was perfect. The timing and placement of the songs, particularly The Chamber's Brothers "Time Has Come Today" was chilling. I recommend the movie to any one that loves good 60's & 70's music. Those songs are among the best ever recorded.
The Hired Hand (1971)
A good, quiet Western with solid performances from the stars
I enjoyed The Hired Hand because of its simplicity. I like a slow moving western in which the characters can be developed. The Hired Hand had three interesting characters who used dialog sparingly(Fonda, Oates, Bloom). The movie had a sense of believability to it. It is a well done movie and I applaud its creators. I had not heard of this film until stumbling across it yesterday. I plan on recommending it to friends. The realism contained in the acting and scenery make it stand out. Although it contains some violence, it was secondary to the build-up of tension that led to it. I enjoyed Fonda's quiet nature and Oates' sincere friendship he had for Fonda. Movies this good that you have never heard of before are hard to find.
