Bridesmaids (2011)
Not the film was expecting, pleasantly surprised
This movie was advertised as being the female equivalent to the Hangover, but it isn't anything like the Hangover. There's no drunken bachelorette party. It borders on being a rom com and is more about the main character, Kristin Wiig, finding herself again. Whilst there is the occasionally slapstick moment and variety of improvised crude lines, it's not so much to offend anyone. I don't like silly movies generally but I do like rom coms, and I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Also surprising is how well Chris O'Dowd fits in to the movie and his believable performance having only seen him in quirky British TV shows like IT Crowd. At times the dialogue was a little awkward in the movie and there's some uncomfortable pauses but a pleasant surprise.
Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012)
Emotional insight into Katy Perry's world
I wouldn't say I'm a "fan" of Katy Perry but I do like her music. I was curious to see into the world of Katy Perry. I watched the Beyonce documentary last year and found that to be quite self absorbed and pretentious. Katy's movie wasn't anything like that. She includes her fans in the movie and there are no selfies. There's just her doing what she does. The middle of the movie does focus a little on her divorce to Russell. She started the movie before the divorce, but it's easy to see why people think she's trying to cash in on it. It was quite emotional seeing her experience raw emotion and exhaustion. It was nice to see she's a normal girl with a great songwriting talent. I also noticed she has a little bit of a tummy, but that made me relate more to her and realise she is just a human being like me. It was nice to see a celeb not airbrushed and makeup free. Exposed. After seeing this I wouldn't want to go see Katy on tour (turns out she's a terrible dancer!), but I enjoyed watching it. I love it when she says to the audience "Thank you for believing in my weirdness".
The Proposal (2009)
Unexpected like
I had avoided watching this movie for a long time as I don't like Ryan Reynolds. Often his characters are arrogant and I thought this one would be the same. Surprisingly his character was quite likable. The story wasn't very believable - would you fall for your boss who had bullied you for years? I love Sandra Bullock and there was no fault in her acting but the arc of her character didn't seem believable. Perhaps there needed to be a typical movie montage where they bond and laugh together in typical Hollywood style. However, despite the terrible storyline, I actually found I enjoyed this movie and have re-watched it many times since. Andrew's mum and grandma are very likable and it's nice to have a movie not primarily set in New York. It's not perfect but an enjoyable watch.
Material Girls (2006)
Not believable but easy watching
I really like Hilary Duff but this movie didn't really have any substance. The characters were not very 3-dimensional and not very believable as heiresses. Perhaps it was a combination of the wardrobe and the poor acting. The sisters have very similar voices so if you look away from the screen whilst you are watching then it's very difficult to differentiate between them. This was the first film I've seen Hayley Duff in and I wasn't impressed. However, I did watch the film all the way to the end. It was predictable but easy watching so if you wanted a film to just switch off to then this does the job. Perhaps the film would appeal more to younger girls.
LOL (2012)
Teenagers relate to this?
I've never liked Miley Cyrus so I'm not sure what induced me to watch this movie in the first place. I think I'd hoped because Demi Moore was in it that the movie would have some substance. The movie had no substance, and Miley Cyrus came across a bit slutty in it. There was no moral ground for teenagers whatsoever. It almost seemed to encourage drugs, sex and disobeying your parents. Perhaps because I was not rebellious as a teen, I couldn't relate to the characters. The story seemed to have no purpose. The film seemed to want to play on the social media and texting culture of kids but didn't seem to grasp the concept. The messages the characters sent to each other didn't really communicate anything. Suspect the messages were written by someone who doesn't have a facebook or text very much. Would not recommend this film to anyone.
The Tudors (2007)
Violence, sex and historical inaccuracies
I have been interested in Tudors since a young age and know quite a bit about Henry VIII and his wives. As such I was really dubious about watching this programme and resisted it for a few years. After starting to watch it I found myself hooked. After seeing portraits of an overweight ginger king, I was sceptical about Jonathan Rhys Meyers but he commanded such a presence he won me over.
That been said, the programme is steeped in historical inaccuracies. Whole stories have been made up for members of the court such as Thomas Tallis. They also eliminated both his sisters and created a strange hybrid of a sister who marries and murders her husband King of Portugal, which is entirely fictitious. Of course with other inaccuracies, blanks have to be filled in by speculation.
The costumes were fantastic, yet at times inaccurate with Queen Katherine of Aragon and Lady Mary. The cast is fantastic. Natalie Dormer really plays the passion of Anne Boleyn. Sam Neill is great as Wolsey. Jonathan Rhys Meyers really brought Henry VIII to life despite not being like Henry's appearance. The only time I didn't believe his performance was in the last season. In his attempt to play an older Henry, he put on a strange gruff voice. One who did a fantastic job at playing his character ageing was Henry Cavill as Brandon. The time scale of the programme doesn't always match up though.
Whilst there obviously was a lot of sex and violence in Tudor times, I was surprised at the amount of nakedness and sex in the programme. Obviously there was the executions but there was violence added in. Wolsey died of illness in real life but they gave him quite a gory ending. At times, I had to look away.
If you can get past all the inaccuracies, it was quite an enjoyable programme to watch and does bring the Tudor court to life.
