Promising Young Woman (2020)
It was great
After seeing the rating here I was definitely expecting an above average movie and it actually didn't disappoint. Moreover, I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.
Lets just say Carry Mulligan pretty much carried this movie all the way til the end.
In fact, after she died she was still commanding the movie with the text messages.
I've read a lot of reviews here (and there a lot of them) criticising the movie about the lack of character depth and I feel like a lot of people tried to take this movie for what it wasn't.
For me at least, it was never about the their background itself as it was mostly about the subject matter and the dialogue that made this a thrilling watch.
Some of the dialogues were extremely uncomfortable but yet it served the movie's purpose - which was to expose a bit how cruelly people can just cover up serious accusations and wrong doings and of course how easily men can take advantage of vulnerable women. But in a thrilling-revenge type of way.
It kind of reminded me of the movie Ready or Not that had also this really dark tone but somehow enjoyable to watch.
And the way how the character's interactions with each other weren't very complex either made it even more eerier cause it can all look normal on the surface until they show their true selves. Like how Cassandra invited Alison to the restaurant and got her drunk. Or how she made Ryan show how much he values his job over people.
In real life, this whole manipulation sounds very messed up but somehow it worked in this movie. And I loved that nuance how Cassandra always just let the other person do the talking and kind of expose themselves.
Now the ending itself wasn't perfect. But it's a hard task to wrap a movie with such a dark subject and it was certainly an interesting decision to kill the main protagonist, given how wrong of a direction her life was going. Maybe you would've hoped some sort of silver lining for her.
So overall, I really think a lot of the reviewers here took this movie too seriously or expected way too much of it when it was only meant to be a thriller-revenge movie with a couple cliché moments (the pharmacy scene) and twists but with a dark undertone. And it achieved that.
A Night to Remember (1958)
A true tragedy
We all know how tragic the event itself was but this movie really paints it well how it lead up to it.
It depicts how smuggy some of the crew members were: holding people down, repeating the phrase "It's unsinkable". Never truly realizing how severe the situation really was.
Understandably, some of it was done as a precaution to not create too much panic but the people deserved to know the truth. It was truly heart-breaking to watch people taking the situation so lightly because they weren't told what was really going on.
Of course there were other members who took it seriously from the get-go, and thankfully the captain was one of them. Though I think the captain could've been more firm with his wording. And although he gave direct orders to let children and women first there were some instances where the crew members seemingly lowered boats that still had room (maybe my eyes were lying). But there was at least one instance of it.
In the middle of everyone's panic there was one passenger who was attempting to make a floating platform out of wooden chairs and I felt like he was one of the few ones who actually expressed some instincts of survival. Now this might sound dumb cause we all know how freezing cold the water was but make-shifting some sort of wooden platforms from the materials the ship (the paintings were massive in some of the halls) had might've gone a long way. It sounds crazy but knowing what the captain knew that's how I felt when I was watching the movie.
And then there was the ship "Californian" that had information been sent to multiple times about the Titanic's situation but they chose to ignore it.
I'm not sure if this was a review of the movie as it was more of a depiction of my thought process I had during my watch.
My review would simply be: It's a captivating, engaging two hour movie with great cinematography that tells a heart-breaking story of the sinking of the Titanic without the extra romance.
If you want to read a proper review there are many wonderful ones here. Compared to those mine looks like something a 10 year old could've wrote.
Wrong Turn (2021)
Not good
I will say that the ending of the movie was the only part that wasn't predictable and even somewhat original. The visualisation of future events was a really cool touch. And I liked how the movie continued throughout the credits roll. Something I haven't seen done alot.
Other than that, it just uses the same old lineral plot points we've all seen a hundred times. A thing that would've changed this movie for the better would've been adding more brain cells to the characters. The decision making was really poor but some of the lines they said were equally as bad.
My favourite line is: "You tell me, who's world is more barbaric?" and then the leader proceeds to be just that. I know you have to be the bad guy but can't you think of something more clever to say before smashing a guy's head?
Another line was from Darius: "Do you really think you can go back to your old life?" Uuh, you mean the life that doesn't involve being stuck in stone age? Yeah.
Sure, I know what he meant by that but from a logical standpoint how is that even a question. Of course you should return.
Anyways, this movie isn't a sequal to Wrong Turn nor there is any resemblence to WT 1 or WT 2 other than the "people get lost, strange people start hunting them" but if you likemovies that are similar to Wrong Turn then give this a try. But don't get your hopes up.
Happy Death Day (2017)
Actually not bad
You may be looking at the cast or watching this movie and thinking: "Hmm, is this gonna be some sorority/college themed movie with not a lot of memorable acting?" The answer is yes, kind of. There's still some good moments. But trust me, if you can look past that and just watch the movie 'til the end it's worth it. Cause the plot itself pretty much carries the whole movie and I'm okay with it. If you're a fan of Groundhog Day then this movie is a great tribute to that. It also has a little bit of Edge of Tomorrow vibe in it.
Frat Party (2009)
This movie should be titled "Messing with a girl's head"
At first, the original title itself seemed intriguing, i was hoping for yet another American Pie or just a High School graduate party movie. Before considering to watch this i came here to check if the movie is legit. After realizing (based on reviews)that it's basically another "Worst" movie ever, i figured Hey i still want to watch this to prove myself wrong. I was still hoping for some comedy.
Well, in all honesty it wasn't the worst of the worst. If you have enjoyed a movie like Night at the Roxbury then this one is for you. But it was another movie where at the end you say: So what exactly did i learn from this? Or..what happened? Or just...what? It had some themes of American Pie sort of things but in overall, I'd say the lack of commitment is what gave this movie a bad rating.
Back to the review (!!!SPOILERS!!!). This movie started with a promising scene. A guy telling a story about his incredible social life and about this soon-to be an awesome party that is coming. Only thing is, the party is held the day before he should be getting married to her girlfriend (Caroline D'Amore). So he goes on and on begging the girl, with a grind face, to let him go to the party. Ridiculous right? Where's the commitment? But that's what the title says "Frat party". And the girl's like ah well..okay. Say what?
Another weird point was that the father of the bride was just plain moron. The wedding is soon to be held and he's like: Hey, don't marry him, instead marry my daughter's ex boyfriend. He goes on and on about it. And he said it with a calmly voice. You could tell by his face he really didn't give a crap about the wedding anyway.
So now the main guy is having his "time of his life" at the party. The party scenes itself were well thought through but there was just no momentum. The party organizer tried to impress the main guy (groom) with all kinds of different things, to really give him the best party of his life but they all fell short. There were too many pauses in this movie. Like I said, lack of momentum. Things get a bit out of hand when he suddenly?surprisingly?predictably? Get's locked up in a...sex dungeon. He was seduced..no need for details (except that the sister's ex was also there). And he stays there till the early morning when FINALLY his drunk best man who was at the party too manages to wake up and realize that the groom is actually missing..for hours. Meanwhile the bride is constantly being pressured by her sister who also just goes on and on: He is not coming, he won't make it, leave him..blah. Again, what?
Okay so, the grand finale. The groom is on his way to the wedding, driving as fast as he can. Starting to see some spirit already. The next scene is already in the church. The bride is heart-broken. Then the father appears again. He then again says to the bride: Well is he coming?...uh mm. But marry my daughter's ex. Here, he's right here (a miracle!). The ex is like the backup plan. Like i said the father doesn't really give a damn.
So the bride ..boom..marries her sister's ex man. As the ceremony ended, right comes the real man who should have gotten married but it was too late for him. The new man is carrying her to the limo with honor and smile, meanwhile she just looks totally confused. Trying to be heart-broken, the main man...boom..gets back together with her ex-girlfriend (who was actually at the frat party too)..Right at the same day! You see the characters are just teleporting themselves. Okay some gibber jabber happened again .. fast forwarding to the beach scenes.
Important fact: the married couple had reserved a hotel. So the bride is obviously confused, just mind blown already. Then she finds in her beach hotel room her sister and the ex whom she just got married (couple of minutes ago ) basically having sex. She screams at the top her lungs at them but it's no use anymore. Her heart and brain are just shattered. Especially brain. Okay meanwhile the main character already managed to break-up again with her ex girlfriend. Also saddened by his life he wanders in the beach (At some point i thought he's gonna drown himself). Anyway the bride decided to also go to the beach where she finds the original "groom". They stare at each other, just UTTERLY confused, and they kiss. (!!!SPOILERS END!!!)
If you are looking to see this movie be prepared to be heart-, brain-shocked because that's what it is. In a confusing way. I actually liked some acting, but you could tell the actors were also confused. It seemed like they themselves didn't even know what the movie was really all about. Expect for the main girl (Caroline D'Amore). That's why i titled it "Messing with a girl's head".
