The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
I went in with low expectations...
And they were met. I really wanted to like it and kept waiting for it to get better, but it never exceeded mediocrity. So many missteps, but there were some good moments too. Some of the relationships were pretty nice and so was some of the acting, but half of the kids were at least written/directed horribly. I won't name names to spare feelings but just not believable at all.
Speaking of which, the whole premise of scientists destroying their state of the art facilities and safety/security to take a stand is quite a stretch. Like they had know idea of how hard it was out in the world without their fresh coffee. At best they would have gone on strike maybe.
I could go on, but on a good note, at least it was only two seasons.
The Umbrella Academy: Auf Wiedersehen (2022)
Days of Our Lives
The drama really detracts from the story. There are certainly other redeeming parts, but now we all just hate Allison. Boo hoo woe is me. That subplot is really getting old.
Justified: Cash Game (2015)
Outrageous Egregious Preposterous
It should be illegal for Sam Elliot to be clean shaven. That is all.
Otherwise another solid episode in a great series. Looking forward to Justified City Primeval.
Prey (2022)
Original is King
Nothing will ever top the original, but this is a far cry from being the worst in the series. (That title is firmly held by The Predator - still can't get that taste out of my mouth. Even Olivia Munn could barely keep me from walking out of the theater in the last 10 minutes).
If you watch this with moderate expectations as a stand alone, you should be entertained.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Make up your mind: Wampa or Ewok.
Either make Star Wars for adults or for kids, you apparently can't have it both ways. I was six when Star Wars came out and wow. Then the Empire Strikes Back (the pinnacle) came out a few years later. By the time Return of the Jedi came out I was 12 and old enough to think the Ewoks were lame. How could tiny teddy bears beat the much feared Empire?
Fast forward years (more than I would like to acknowledge) and The Phantom Menace is released. Excitement was an understatement. Cast members were slowly revealed and it added to my anticipation. I'm in the theater, the title, the opening crawl text, and action. Things quickly develop and then the moment of my greatest hope for what would be the entire trilogy of prequels occurred when Qui-Gon sank his lightsaber into the blast doors to melt them. Mind officially blown! Who knew?! This iconic, mysterious, weapon of honor and death used as a blunt tool to force entry. Little did I know that Jar Jar would soon appear...
Now you have taken another iconic weapon and blunted it, but in a bad way. I don't blame Disney, Lucas ruined Star Wars long before they did. But they continue to squander opportunities to make Star Wars cool again. Sure, there a flashes of what we want to see, but they are few and far between. Even Mando suffers from it. I'm not saying it can't be humorous and fun, but there is so much that doesn't work. I won't list it all here as other reviews have done that already. (I won't even talk about the lack of "tactics" another huge disappointment - how have they all lived this long?)
I said you can't make it for adults and kids, that isn't entirely true. Episodes III and IV and some of the animated series did. Let's hope the next season can capture some of that magic at least.
Super Hot (2021)
Low budget gold
Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Solid dialogue and decent acting make up for mediocre SyFy channel special effects. Worth the time. Looking forward to a sequel.
Dorohedoro (2020)
Best Anime in awhile
Excellent show. Fun characters and great action. Right up there in my top ten, top fifteen at least. Looking forward to season 2.
Baki (2018)
Make it stop
This has to be one of the worst anime series I have ever watched. The fight scenes are pretty good, maybe even better on mute. The story premise is good, but doesn't ever go anywhere. The only thing that is worse is the dialogue, it's atrocious.
I'm not even halfway through and I just want it to end, but I feel like I have too much time vested in it. If you don't heed my warning, at least do something productive while you watch so you don't feel like you wasted part of your life.
I will push on through and just hope the end isn't as disappointing as the rest.
