Southland Tales (2006)
It is good.
I don't know why so many people hate this movie. I saw the finished cut at Fantastic Fest and I thought it was really good. Really really confusing, but good nonetheless. Definitely for a more intellectual crowd. Definitely warrants multiple viewings. But still really good.
Way different than Donnie Darko but similar at the same time. The acting is amazing. the production design is amazing the cinematography is amazing. the main drawback is that the story is really confusing, mainly due to the fact that there are way too many characters. but even with those problems, the movie is really really good.
Diggers (2006)
A serious movie made by funny people
I saw this movie at SXSW in Austin right after attending a panel about the making of the movie. The film was originally to be directed by funny man David Wain of Stella fame, but he pulled out to direct "the Ten" which is an amazing film. I expected the film to be funny. Ken Marion, who wrote it, is a hilarious comedian. Paul Rudd, the lead actor, has been in comedies almost exclusively since Wet Hot American Summer and David Wain, who produced the film, is hilarious. The movie, however, was very serious. It had some amazingly hilarious moments, but overall it was a moving, serious film. I was most amazed at the fact that they pulled it off with style. A bunch of comedians made a moving, well structured, meaningful, fulfilling drama. Everyone should see it.
Idiocracy (2006)
FOX is a bunch of MORONS
This movie was amazing. it would have been even better if the studio hadn't cut a significant amount of the funny scenes and covered up all the best jokes with voice over. its a hilarious, original vision of the future and if you like things that are funny, then go see it. Luke Wilson is surprisingly funny and proves to the world that he in fact CAN carry a movie (unlike you would think from Wendell Baker and Bongwater). Maya Rudolph is the perfect whore. Dax Sheperd's first outing as an actor shows promise. David Hermann (of Michael Bolton fame) is amazing but his part was cut down to near nothing, along with the rest of the president's cabinet, who were all hilarious but we barely got to see them. All in all, the movie is great, but could have been oh so much better if Mr. Judge had been able to put his true vision on the screen and not some watered down hollywoodized bullshit. anyway, I can't wait for the future if you can really get hand jobs in Starbucks.
