Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Extraordinary girl in forbidden love story
The movie is really great. All the details are very well done - like the costumes, the story, the views etc. I enjoyed most the beautiful shots of the nature - very Japanese, very common and beautiful. Also the story is romantic and in the same time - heavy, because the Geisha is so fragile, and she is suffering all her life. It's really amazing love story, and I think it shows the reality in the past. It's very hard to understand, but the action is taking place in the beginning of the 20th century - not so far in time, but so different from nowadays. I gave rank 8, because it's really good movie, but you know somehow what will happen at the end - you just feel it. Even without reading the book.
Vreme na nasilie (1988)
The hidden suffer of one whole nation
This movie represents the historical reality in the Bulgarian's life during the five century slavery of the Ottoman empire. Probably in the most historical textbooks you won't find the poor reality and the suffering of the people, only facts, which can't describe the real life of the Bulgarians. xxx SPOILERS xxx The movie represents the history of one village in the Rodopi mountains. The population is forced to change it's religion - from Christianity to Islam. All the events are based on the real stories, collected by the author from the people living nowadays in these mountains. If you are interested in the history events, probably this movie will be very interesting for you. It's a masterpiece based on TRUE facts, not an imaginary story. Warning: the movie contains a lot scenes of violence and it's not recommended to be seen of children.
Bay Ganyo tragna po Evropa (1991)
A comedy or the drama of a whole nation
Bai Ganio is a typical Bulgarian trader from the end of th 19th century - greedy, a little bit simpleton, but always trying to "get the benefit". His traveling around Europe is made only to allows him to get more money from "the rich and foolish Europeans". ***SPOILERS*** The whole film is based on the Bai Ganio's rural behavior. There's memorable scenes such as the ones at the bathroom and the home of Konstanin Irechek. Everybody sees that Bai Ganio is simpleton and is very bumptious. The only one who doesn't understand that is Bai Ganio himself. Bai Ganio is a symbol of the whole Bulgarian's "elite" of the 19th century. That's why this brilliant comedy is in fact a way to show the decay of the Bulgarian's nation. Aleko Konstantinov is probably the best satirist in the Bulgarian literature of the past two centuries. He always tried to show the real mentality of the Bulgarians. Of course, character as Bai Ganio are strongly exaggerated. But the main idea unfortunately remains the same - there always will be someone who thinks only about the profits and benefits.
Pod igoto (1990)
Very realistic
I saw the film 4 or probably 5 years ago. I needed to read the book for school, but I preferred to watch the series, because it's very well done.
***SPOILERS***
"Pod Igoto" is one of the Bulgarian masterpiece novels. It is about the hard life under the Ottoman's yoke and the efforts of some people to rebel against the Ottomans. It's happening in April 1876. The peasants of a small village called Biala Cherkva (translated White Church), which is situated near a larger town, which name originally in the novel is not announced, but we can suggest that it's Koprivshtitza, decide to rise up against the ottomans. The whole preparation for the revolt is organized by the main male character - Boitcho Ognianov, who is prison-breaker presenting himself for a teacher. He meets the young teacher Rada Gospojina and both fall in love. Everybody in Biala Cherkva are very nervous because of the rising up. There's also some people like Kiriak Stefchov, who seeks the benefit of being friend to the ottomans at the village, and are trying to frustrate the whole preparation. There is many interesting and original characters in this movie. All of them are based on the reality in Bulgaria during the April rebellion in 1876. Ivan Vazov tried to show as real as he can the hard existence of the common Bulgarian people under the Ottoman's yoke. At the end of the 'rebellion' made by the people in Biala Cherkva, a little cannon shoots. It was going to be the main strike of the rebels, but when they fires it up expecting to shake the whole mountain, it just cracks as Vazov says "like a fart coming out of a hell's rectum". This means that all the efforts was just useless. t the end all of the leading rebels dies.
***END OF SPOILERS***
The series shows the real life in the 19th century in Bulgaria. There is a strong drama, love affair, but the main remains the rebellion of the people. The film is about the hope the people had and how hopelessly is their existence. The movie is very strong. There are some violent scenes, so I don't recommend it to children under age of 12. It is based on one of the Bulgarian's masterpiece novels. If you like based-on-true films, you may like this.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Take a deep breath and watch the movie
I saw the movie a long time ago. First I saw it at the cinema. Believe me, when I went out to the street, I felt like the whole world was not real. I was thinking about our reality, about the future, about the miracles on the world. This movie is has a very deep philosophy, it says so much things, that you need to watch it at least twice to realize what is the deep concept behind the story of the boy. The second time I saw it I was at home. I watched the movie with my grandmother. She is very sensitive by nature and she cried a lot while we watched A.I. Finally, I think that the movie is a masterpiece of the fiction genre. If you like a deep drama movies, you'd better take a deep breath and go watch the movie. I promise you won't be sorry. I voted the movie 8/10 because of the trivial final. Spielberg could do it better!
Joe Millionaire (2003)
Not the perfect one
I saw some of the series of 'Joe the millionaire' and I really don't find it's interesting. These's only one thing that it's great - the castle of the millionaire and the beautiful places that Evan and the girls visited. I thought that it's going to be the next interesting reality show, but I was disappointed. I think that the whole concept is very interesting because there isn't any other reality show with the same concept. Finally, I don't recommend it to anyone! It's boring and is just a waste of time. My mother liked it because of the nice places, but that's all. The rest of the show is just another form of a soap series.
Thirteen (2003)
These girls were so natural that I wanted to watch the movie over and over...
Why Catherine Hardwicke still hasn't an Oscar? I saw the movie and I can say only one thing about it - realistic. I think it's the best movie about the teenage lifestyle. Yes, not all the teenagers are so wild and so crazy, but ALL of them want to be. I think that the characters in this movie are typical for all the schools all around the world. I mean that everywhere there is at least one Evie and many more than one Tracy. The movie is great, as the actresses are. These girls were so natural that I wanted to watch the movie over and over... Finally, I got it on DVD. All I can say is that the DVD really costs its price. I recommend it to everybody - teenagers, mothers of teenagers, everyone who likes movies that makes you think for days. If you like dramas watch 'Thirteen' and you won't be sorry.
