Zona dla Australijczyka (1964)
Delightful ! MAZOWSZE fans will love this film !!
This is the story of an Australian who falls for a singer from the Mazowsze Polish folk song and dance ensemble, after seeing them perform. He kidnaps her and a Doris Day - Rock Hudson - type romantic comedy follows.
What is great about this film, however, are the many Mazowsze performances!!! They look and sound just as great as they do today !! with Tadeusz Sygietyinski's music, Mira Zyminska-Sygietynska's lyrics and staging, and Witold Zapala's choreography.
The added bonus of Sygietinski's music as soundtrack makes this a perfect film for Mazowsze fans. My only criticism with this film is that, since Mazowsze is known for their many colorful costumes, there should have been more costume changes, especially for the Polonaise.
Three in the Attic (1968)
Three girls who discover their boyfriend is the same guy, get revenge by locking him in an attic, and taking turns visiting him!
This is one of the great movies of all time.... on par with = The Graduate = .... It had a major influence on teenage girls who saw it in the '60's.
We constantly joked about the guys we had locked up in our own attics! Of course, it was the other way around... Each girl had 7 or 8 guys locked in her attic, and the fact that a couple of us actually had bedrooms in the attic made the joke even funnier.
I don't know why I have not seen this film since it came out in 1968, but I really wish someone would bring it back.
Even to this day, my friends and I joke about our attics, in the same way that we joked about the Ford that was mentioned in The Graduate (of course, that reference didn't last quite as long as the "attic".)
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Depressing !!
Why do they make movies about people you could not care less about, living depressing lives, in dirty buildings?
Why not make uplifting films about charismatic people, doing magical things, in beautiful settings.
I'm sorry, but I'll take Harry Potter, or ALW's Phantom of the Opera, or Shall We Dance, or Jurassic Park any day.
Movies should be Fun and Entertaining! If I want to be depressed, I'll watch the News on TV.
Million Dollar Baby is to the theater what Jerry Springer is to television.
I'm sorry I went to see it. I did so only because of Clint Eastwood, but he surely did not make my day.
Sideways (2004)
Don't waste your time !
The previews of this film gave me the impression that it was made by the same people who did the wonderful film, Under the Tuscan Sun. (I guess because of one of the actresses.)
So I was totally disappointed when I sat there, trying to watch the film, trying not to nod off in the theater.
It started off as a slice of Los Angeles, which, for those of us who live here, is not very attractive.
Then an ugly guy teams up with a friend who is a total jerk, and they go for a ride and drink wine.
Huh?
And they pick up girls, and they drink wine together.
Huh? Was this supposed to be a comedy? It certainly wasn't funny.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Wildly Erotic!
Not big on musicals, I went to see Phantom because of sexy Gerard Butler!!! Not only was I completely smitten with the dark sensuality of his Phantom, but I was blown away by the beauty of the film and the music. I can't stop singing the songs. Emmy Rossum is fantastic as well. Like Butler, she can act with her eyes.
My only complaint was too many cut-aways of other people while this duo sang "Point of No Return" I wanted to see more of them together, as I prepared to "rip my bra off" (I quote another reviewer).
P.S. The silent version of Phantom is very similar in story and look, except towards the end, where the Phantom remains evil, etc. Interesting that in 1925 they filmed the masquerade ball in color, with the phantom in red, with a white mask (it's at this point in the silent film that they go on the roof of the opera house.)
Also, for those who have been wondering..."keep your hand at the level of your eye" is explained in the Lon Chaney film. I won't give it away, cos it's kind of fun if you don't know.
