Black Mirror: Metalhead (2017)
Season 4, Episode 5
10/10
Terrifying, Hopeless, and Vague
29 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Of all of Black Mirror's episodes, "Metalhead" is perhaps the most vague. Little dialogue, no backstory, no color, few characters. Never before has the show done so much with so little. Nor has the show had me on the edge of my seat for so long.

My first thought after the episode ended was that a backstory on the dogs would be a great idea. My second thought was maybe not. I can respect how this episode is just a big mystery (How on Earth did we end up here?) that goes unsolved.

The ending of this episode is grim and hopeless, as is the episode as a whole. While most episodes of Black Mirror have a meaning or a warning or a message they're trying to convey, "Metalhead" is the exception. Instead of a message, "Metalhead" is pure relentless entertainment, and it succeeds because of that.

Beautifully acted, beautifully directed. Definitely one of Black Mirror's strongest outings to date.
