Merry Christmas (2024)
The best hindi movie I have seen in 2024
A classic noir film. The suspense will hold you back to your seat till the very last scene. The characterization is unparalleled. Every single actor did an amazing job in their respective roles. The lead actor Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif were just mind blowing. They shone in every single frame. In small but important roles Vinay Pathak, Tinu Anand and Radhika Apte left their mark. The time period creation is amazing. Small details are so apt and connected the dots beautifully. Hats off to the director Sriram Raghavan for making this masterpiece. Also the dialogue writer deserves a mention. The dialogue " Anything fermented except dosa batter" is such a classic.
It's a must must watch movie.
Badi Heroine Banti Hai (2024)
Brainless romantic drama with terrible acting.
Just avoid. I wasted precious few hours of my life watching this series. The plot is too far fetched. Absolutely no logic in any of the incidents happening. Police procedures are a joke. Apparently it is an emotional drama. But you won't find any balanced emotions anywhere. For example, the yiunger brother came to know that his elder brother survived a murder attempt and his immediate reaction is cracking joke about his brother's feeling for his girlfriend. A multi millionaire doesn't have any security at his house neither he has any alarm system. But he has cctv camera capturing intense romantic scenes. In one scene the hero is injured with so many glass shards on his back. Next scene everyone forgets about it. Badic continuity is missing in most of the scenes. Basically it is a mushy, no brainer soap with more liberty to show graphic romance scenes in OTT platform. It is an erotica on OTT. Worst of all is the acting by the lead actress. She sucks at showing any intense human emotions.
Karmma Calling (2024)
Complete disaster. Just a comeback for Raveena Tandon. Nothing else.
The makers spent too much money in casting Raveena Tandon and dressing the actors. They should have spent a little more money on the story, direction and editing. The overall story is hardly 4 episodes worth. They stretched it too long unnecessarily. All actings are extremely poor and quite a few over acted too much. Especially the young actors all needed an acting workshop. Including the main protagonist. Screenplay is hilarious. Useless overlappings and parties make the series dull and dragged. Predictable story line and no logical conclusion to any event. Police and law enforcement is practically shown as useless entities. I am not even going to watch the rest of the episode when it releases.
Sam Bahadur (2023)
A brilliant biopic made for a brilliant man.
I loved the movie. But mostly because of the colourful history of the man and the brilliant acting by Vicky Kaushal. But I personally feel, this movie failed as a biopic. In a biopic it is not prudent to capture every single pahse and event of one's life. Especially like a person like Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw. His life is so eventful that it will be an impossible task to cover all the events without given due importance to it. Which happened here. So many crucial events shown in the film failed to leave any impact apart from adding to the length of the film. Like the part in Manipur or the one in Kashmir. So to make a biopic interesting and thrilling, one has to take one
key event and build the movie up to that event. The pinnacle of the general's life was his win in the 1971 war. So the story should have been built up till there and finished on the thrilling note and rest of his journey as climbing up till the Field Marshal should be given in an end credit.
Loved the acting of Vicky Kaushal. He is so natural that it's unbelievable. The scene where he was named as Sam Bahadur gave me goosebumps. I watched it again and again. The supporting casts were also very apt and nice.
The Night Manager (2023)
Better than the original
First time I felt that the series made in India is better than the original English series. One reason may be because of the lenth. The English one is spread across two seasons and by the time I reached season 2, I lost my interest. But here it is crisp and concise. So I was totally glued. I kind of connected with the characters more strongly. No unnecessary drama added and kept the story line clean. The making of the series is so apt and execution is wonderful. I loved it thoroughly. The makers knew their shortcomings and exploited it beautifully through the storyline.
Now comes to acting. Aditya Roy Kapoor is the strongest actor of gis generation and absolutely a delight to watch. Saswata Chatterjee as BJ is just mind blowing. He looked more intimidating and scary as a villain than Anil Kapoor. Anil Kapoor is as usual over the top and he could be replaced with some subtje actor. Tilottama and Joy made their characters so authentic. Loved the dialogues. Also the twist in the story with current geo political time line is one reason to connect with the series more strongly.
Fanaa (2006)
A nice story with poor execution.
When I watched Fanaa for the first time, I couldn't connect with the story. But now I watched it again. And after so many years the story is feeling relevant. Of course we have seen too many terror attacks and lots of series and movies on true stories. The movie was having only one issue. The stress was given on the romance so much that they could not build the susiense part of it. The delhi part could be shortened much to show the emotional dilemma of the character Rehan. Also the father son bonding can be elaborated and explored in details. The character of Tabu was such a powerful one but totally wasted. Needed much more details on terror plot to make it look more plausible. They should have gone for a simpler terror plot to make it more convincing instead of the nuclear one. Film should have been more logical. Like the character of Rishi Kapoor should have asked mire questions before agreeing to the nuptials of his daughter to a stranger. Editing could have been much better and crisper. Also the movie didn't need so many songs.
Animal (2023)
Shameless display of sado machocism and unappetizing violence
A week daily soap plot stretched to create an unbelievable and unappetizing saga of violence and sado machocism. A story that is so old, which is practically irrelevant in today's world. The sado machocism is Sandeep Reddy Vanga's speciality. He shamelessly showcased it in Kabir Singh and now showing it here. What one thing was beyond tolerance was especially the behaviour of the male protagonist with females. Most people condemned his behaviour with his wife or girlfriend. But for me, the most intolerable behaviour was with the househelps. That is beyond acceptable. Also censor board should not pass movies which kind of encourages domestic abuse.
Hostages (2019)
Nicely made. Excellent acting. Length is a bit long. But a must watch
Hostages is a nicely made series. Loved the suspense and the mystery built. Acting of all the actors is mind blowing. Especially Ronit Roy and Tisca Chopra will floor you. The cool level headed surgeon with nerves of steel in adverse situation is brilliantly protrayed by Tisca Chopra. Ronit Roy portrayed is dilemma as an honest police officer committing a crime so truthfuly that I started feeling for him. My only concern about this series is that it's length. It could have been neatly wrapped up in 8 episodes. 12 episodes is a bit too long.
Another concern was the authenticity of the motive. The makers got a bit too busy creating the suspense that the motive and the back story fell short in some of the places.
One major drawback that after season 1 it becomes quite predictable and season 2 doesn't intrigued me any more and I dropped it after the first episode. Also the villains of the series are not scary enough.
Indian Police Force (2024)
Just don't waste your Time. Cliché and predictable through and through.
Series : Indian Police Force
Rating : 3/10
So Rohit Shetty has made a Bollywood movie on television. Through and through it's a cliché and extremely predictable. After Special Ops and Family man it's so lame that I literally started browsing the phone in between. Instead of spending so much details and unnecessary car chases he should have put a little effort into the story and details. Such lame stories do not work on OTT.
Come on man, it's not 1970, where a few blinking red and green bulbs will not convince the viewer about a high tech communication system. These days even the school kids know details like RAW, IB, CIA etc. So please stop showing things like people breaking the border gates of a foreign country with an SUV and walks inside the country. There are things like International Incident and foreign policies. Come on man.. Bangladesh also has a border security force. What were they doing? Waiting for cue from Rohit Shetty? Unimaginable arrogance of showing single Delhi police vehicle is driving past three Bangladesh intelligence team vehicles and they were also waiting for the cue from Rohit Shetty. Multiple serial blasts happened in three different cities. But IB is not involved. RAW doesn't have any clue or info on that. All captured terrorists identity and family details revealed and splashed in media within minutes of capture and while they are still investigating the case. The terrorist is repeatedly calling his girlfriend who is supposed to be on the train but she is responding sitting in Delhi Police headquarters. But not once did the guy feel there was a difference between a moving train and an ac office. There is no reason to think that we are a bunch of dimwits. It's so stupid a series that I already forgot half the episodes. Delhi police special brunch were doing an operation with bunch of terrorists involved in a serial blast without wearing vests. They were all wearing fancy hoodies which couldn't stop a bullet of a regular pistol from a distance of 15 ft. The bullet tore through the vest and punctured Vivek Oberoi's lung. Come on .. I understood he had only that much screen time. But atleast make it look plausible. A terrorist runs away on a bike and goes to another state to do another set of serial blasts. The police here never heard of things like roadblock or back up. Anyways .. the list is endless. Rohit Shetty just tried to hide is handicap on googling by flying cars and intermittent dose of emotions. The 3 is for the actors. They really tried hard to make it look remotely believable. Shilpa Shetty looks good. Vivek Oberoi is wasted. So is Nikitin Dheer and Sharad Kelkar. Siddharth Malhotra tried to pull off a very weak script on his shoulder. But he didn't have much opportunity. It was already beyond any kind of salvation. Wake up Mr. Shetty, you are trying your hands on a platform where the audience is much more intelligent than your regular Bollywood movies.
The Freelancer (2023)
An action packed thriller which will not let you even blink.
Neeraj Pandey has outdone himself. Freelancer can compete with homeland or other Hollywood webseries and come put as winner. It is nothing less than a Hollywood movie in terms of execution and story telling. But at the same time has all the Indian touch and cultural values. Mohit Raina is just mind blowing. I fell in love with him after watching the Mumbai Diaries. Here he is even better. What acting, what action, what dialogue delivery, what expression. Everything is praiseworthy. He is much more believable as a mercenary than Chris Hemsworth in extraction. Both are about extraction but this one is way more well executed and believable at the same time logical than the other one. Every supporting actor played their part so well. Not even a single character looked out of place or not required. So well executed in terms of production that it looks like watching a movie in a few parts. Hat's off to the entire team.
If you haven't watched it yet, please please watch it.
Scoop (2023)
Brilliant direction, gripping story and mind-blowing acting. A show must not be missed.
Its beautiful work and a masterpiece. One of the best series made in the history of OTT. Fist and foremost the storyline. Since it's based on a real events, the story line was needed to be kept contextual and crisp. Which the Hansal Mehta has done brilliantly. Casting is the hero in this series. Each character is looking like picked out of reality. They are so so closed to the real characters that you will have goosebumps when you see the epilogue. No extra twist and turns added in the plot. The plot was kept closest to the real incident and those were dramatic enough. Lots of movies and series were made on D- Company and that turbulent phase or the later time. This one comesba close second after Black Friday being the best. Karishma Tanna is mind blowing. So is every actor. But her portrayal of the lead is so real that it will forget you about all the glamourous characters and item numbers she did in her past. This lady deserves a bow. Prasenjit Chatterjee was wasted in that small role. But again the story was not about his character. But probably someday some maker will make a movie ir a series on Jyotirmoy Dey and he should be cast in that role again. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub was as usual brilliant. Deven Bhojani brought tears to my eyes with his simple , innocent and honest portrayal of the father figure.
13 Mussoorie (2018)
Barely a one time watch
The story started really nice. With a serial killer story in the backdrop of beautiful Mussoorie. Till episode 5 the story fan really well. Almost at a nail bittingstage where anybody could be the killer. Even the final revelation of the killer was well plotted and quite nicely penned. But the length of the series is the spoiler. It was barely a 5-6 episode story, which they dragged like a marathon. It became slow, boring and very very repetitive. Too many unnecessary characters ate a lot of valuable time and not adding any value to the story. Finally after so much of dragging the climax was rushed. Lots and lots of plot holes which makes the story a bit far fetched. The story had potential but totally wasted.
Cheeni (2020)
Wonderful storyline but poor direction.
The movie has a very cery refreshing and different story line. All the actors aced in their portrayals of their respective characters. Lovely screenplay. What lacking was a proper direction. The director couldn't give thd movie a proper direction. So all the incidents keep coming one after another in a very very haphazard manner. Suddenly uou will feel that you are losing the track of the whole movie. Such a bold and unconventional story needed a much stronger direction. The actor pulled the movie as much as they could. Also the movie was dealing with stereotype in so many ways. But it failed to say that out loud somewhere. The cire thing Cheeni was dealing with the conflict between her mother and her idea of mother, her idea of rebel and rebel. So things were needed to be addressed in a few words somewhere. Hence after having so many critical high points, the movie still feel like lacking a few things.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023)
A headless hunt for direction..
I can bet, any person with a normal IQ can't watch this movie for more than an hour. I strugglee till 38 minutes and still waiting for the story to start. Unbelievably slow and completely mindless. Some mindless plot about professional break up artist. I just started watching the movie because Shraddha Kapoor took the name Tinni which happens to be my name too. Such a disaster. A seven eight year old takes part in all discussions of the family including finances. The members of the family openly abuses and curses in front of the kid and give her money to keep quiet. The whole movie is based on brainless life chouces.
Just avoid.
Jaatishawr (2023)
Old wine in a new bottle with excess topping of unwanted emotions.
It is a typical serving of old wine in a new bottle. That too with excess of emotions and on a side of not so great acting. The chief protagonist Madhumita Sarkar is well known for her over acting. So this series is no exception. Her bulging eyes and child like voice is an eyesore. The concept of reincarnation is exploited in movies and literature quite extensively. So to serve something on that genre, the director should have thought of something new and something which was not told before. But he avoided the unbitten path and prefered to walk on the same old track. Also a perfect thriller is based on a crime with a strong motive. The crime is here. But the motive is weak. Plot building is childish. Characters are hilarious. Overall it is a one-time watch with lots of efforts.
Homestay Murders (2023)
A decent thriller but with an abrupt ending
First and foremost to be talked about this thriller is the star cast. Amazing casting and each one of them worked brilliantly in their scope. Special mention Sohini Sarkar. She was outstanding.
The story is gripping and would keep you glued to your chair. The location is outstanding. Its amazing to see that more and more productions are exploring northbengal and showcasing the beauty of the dooars.
The story is really gripping. Especially the start is absolutely brilliant. So is the progress. But it was a bit predictable. Though I feel the biggest problem was the ending and the editing. The ending was so abrupt that you would feel that they have at least one more episode which they are not telecasting. Also the character building scenes were cut pretty abruptly. A few mire scdne in the beginning, building the characters eould have been great.
Nail Polish (2021)
A thriller and court room drama in award winning standard.
This is a court room drama where the lead actor played by Manav Kaul is accused of rape and murder of several children of migrant workers. He was appointed a renowned lawyer Jaishingh played by Arjun Rampal through some political party. During the trial his lawyer efficiently throws doubt on the entire investigation and all the evidence provided by police. At a crucial point of the case, the prosecution provided some irrefutable DNA evidence. But the entire case takes a dramatic turn from there. To know the turn of the events, you have to watch the movie. But a few key exemplary achievement of the movie are
1. Exception acting by the lead and the supporting actors. Especially Manav Kaul has outdone himself.
2. No songs. How we crave movies with strong story and no time pass songs.
3. Very strong story line.
4. No unnecessary characters. Apart from that of Madhu. But probably that was needed to establish the character of the judge played by Rajit Kapoor. But could have been shortened.
5. Brilliant ending. The most logical ending possible.
6. No sidetracking and diversion into the political game with Arjun Rampal's character and his strained relationship with his father.
7. No police and media drsma and emotional angle through the crime.
Overall, it's a good watch for the thriller lovers. It will kept you glued to your seat till the very last scene and the end credits.
Pathaan (2023)
Pathaan is the first film ever made in surrealist genre. Siddharth Anand is Bollywood's answer to Salvador Dali.
Bollywood has not seen a good comedy movie for a very long time. Finally Paathan fulfilled that need. And as comedy goes, its not forced to laugh comedy. It is pure situational comedy. Haven't laughed so hard in quite some time.
Also it is quite de-stressing. You can't be smarter than a second grader ( mind it.. not paanchvi pass with all pun intended) to watch this movie. You have to put your logical brain at rest (albeit forcefully) to survive 3 hours and to do justice to your £20 spent. The whole movie and especially the action sequences reminds me a lot of Tom and Jerry and The Roadrunner show. Where you never question why Tom's face turned triangular after being hit by an iron box.
The action scenes are direct rip off from marvel and MI franchise.. but the execution will put them at shame. Even captain America never imagined to pull a helicopter with his bare hand and a rope.
My favourite was the missile changing direction as the phone changed its location. Come on.. you didn't get it? The missile coordinates are locked with phone gps. Next best ofcourse is the train jump. First time we could see two super spies of the universe in action together. I must say, Tiger's scarf is deadlier than the machine guns used by the russian Army. He killed more people with the scarf than those machine guns could.
Point to be noted by Ukraine.. Russia doesn't have an air traffic system. Anybody can fly a plane in the city limit that too at very low height and drop cargos on any building they want.
I have only one complaint. If I was John Abraham, I would have used a fake remote in the last scene. Because the moment Paathan pressed the button on the , they landed the plane without any verification. Now how would that be? But don't think that would be much of a difference as these people are killing viruses with dynamites and missiles.
As a whole a very enjoyable movie until the epilogue, where Paathan declared he will come back.... Again..
Go watch it on your own risk. I survived. You may not.
P. S.- Not giving any ratings or reviews. Ratings by mere mortals like be is of no significance to this cult movie.
Cuttputlli (2022)
Poorly made and lots of plot holes. Barely a one time watch.
It is a whodunnit and remake of a very famous movie. I have not watched the original hence the review is not based on nay comparison.
The movie is about a serial killer in kasauli. After 4 deaths, there is no public awareness done by the local authorities. The whole police investigation procedures are totally illogical. Even after a girl is kidnapped and the victim being the daughter of a police officer, no security is placed at the house and the killer happily drops the body in the car of the police officer. No idea how she got the car keys. Four bodies are dumped in city but nobody saw them. The movie is to highlight only Akshay Kumar , hence all other characters were just made passing .. which weakens the movie significantly. The wrong portrayal of the early aging disease or progeria. The ending is abrupt and ends without proper conclusion. Unnecessary songs and dance. Overall a bad film. Just avoid.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)
Mockery of a horror movie
Bhool Bhulaiya 2 is a complete destruction of the good brandname of Bhool Bhulaiya. The movie is a complete horror movie with real ghost and unlike it's predecessor doesnot have any logical reasoning at all. The entire movie is dragged around an almost non-existent story line and gruesome overacting by all very good actors. Especially Tabu and Karthick Aryan are eyesore. One beautiful moment from the previous Bhool Bhulaiya movie was the beautiful song "Ami je Tomar" and the dance sequence along with it. But the memory was destroyed here with an absolute mockery of the dance by Karthik Aryan. It was a pain to watch. The attempt to comedy by the director is terribly failed and created some farse at best.
In short just avoid.
CBI 5 (2022)
Too many plot holes, leaves the story half cooked.
The story started good. Twists and turns were making the story interesting. But I felt they were trying to create a lot of misdirections to keep the suspense alive. Which in turn left lot of open ended threads. At one point the writer just hastily grabbed one thread and reached a conclusion. Its not even logical ending.
The entry of the main protagonist Sethuraman Iyer is delayed for a better effect. But it was too delayed. At one point of time I started feeling when will the story begins. They had a good story with good actors to give us a great movie. But they failed spectacularly.
Editing could have been much better. This is the worst part of the movie.
Its an ok one time watch. That too being generous.
Panchayat (2020)
A must must must watch
If you have not watched Panchayet 2, then please do it soon as possible.
I'm not much fan of comedy . But while husband was binge watching, happened to see a few episodes. I got so intrigued. Went back and watched it starting at season 1.
A few things I absolutely loved about the series..
1. The chemistry between the guys in the Panchayat office.
2. The friendship between 4 people from most unlikely social and generation background to form such strong friendship.
3. The growth of pradhan Manju devi from a regular housewife and village gossip to a strong woman with keen a goal.
Shows that if proper motivation is given, the gossip queen females can change their way of life and do something meaningful with that.
4. The bonding between the people of the village and the simplicity of their life. Its portrayed in a very realistic manner.
5. No romantic or emotional angle so far..
And last but not the least, highlighting some very important socio political issues in a humourous way, without belittling the issues.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Disappointing and dull. Failed to deliver even with the impressive cast.
Starting with the disclaimer. I am an avid Christie fan and reading her books for several years now. Watched the complete series of iTV production of Hercule Poirot starring David Suchet.
After watching him for so long, Kenneth Branagh is bit of dud. His extra bit of energy and mannerism makes Poirot comical. One eery thing though, he sounds exactly like David Suchet. If you just close your eyes and listen to him, he sounds exactly like David Suchet. But what he fails to acquire is the calm composure of Hercule Poirot, the sharp brilliance, the empathetic approach towards solving a problem.
Murder in the orient Express is one of most celebrated and famous novel and screened or filmed multiple times. So there is not much suspense in the plot. Hence , what it needed was thrill. Which is totally missing in the movie.
Coming to the cast and production. The movie has a very very impressive casting. But most of them are wasted. Especially Johny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Judy Dench. Michelle Pfeiffer has still some role to play. But it is all and all Kenneth Branagh show.
The special effects are laughable and at one point it feels like watching a 80's movie in terms of special effects. The screenplay was poor and logic or correlation of events were pretty much missing.
Badhaai Do (2022)
A bold storyline with a most plausible ending
If you haven't watched it yet
Please do watch it
Badhai Do is a movie dealing with a very taboo subject. Even after so many years .. it is still a very taboo subject. I am so glad that these days movies are made on subjects like gay or lesbian couple or trans people and showing things from their point of view and creating awareness. Another beautiful thing it's shown here that Rajkumar Rao is a police officer. So our sexuality has nothing to do with our masculinity or feminity. So people in armed forces can very well be gay and that doesn't compromise their ability to do their job. And I love the sensible ending which gives me a hope for a better and more accepting society.
Rocket Boys (2022)
A show must not be missed
Fresh casting. Amazing acting. Good storyline. Good direction. In short don't miss.
Finally a good period drama on Indian history and not the independence movement or sports or monarchies. A barely explored subject of Indian scientific achievements is the key plot here along with a brief glimpse of the post independence political situation of India. Indian Scientists were always neglected in indian cinema. So we knew about them and their achievements, only from the history books which is quite cut and dry. So learning about the great scientific minds of India Dr. Homi J Bhaba and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and their life , their struggle, their pain , their success is an absolute delight to watch. Some flaws are there while creating the period and that can be ignored.
