Less Than Zero (1987)
Amazing and Frightening
For some crazy reason, I wound up seeing this movie when I was about 6 years old. It has haunted me ever since - and I've never touched any form of narcotic. The scene in which Blair and Clay nurse RDJr after he has O.D'd is shocking and moving. Jamie Gertz in meek and submissive while Andrew McCarthy is meek, yet trying to gain control. I am partial to James Spader, but his character is solid. The inability of he and Julian to stay away from one another will drive you batty. The story is dark and glamorous, poignant and sad, sad, sad. You will be frustrated through Downey's ups and downs and Blair's ability to mask her problems from herself, but every moment of Less than Zero is truly captivating.
Married to the Mob (1988)
Top Ten
I'm surprised with the amount of negative reviews on this film. If you don't like this movie for what it is - a silly, over-the-top, mob story - then you are simply reading too much into it. This film is a classic tale of a mob wife trying to escape "the life" and the troubles that follow her. Michelle Pfeiffer is terrificly 80's 'jersey, who is an uncertain, uncomfortable mob wife while Matthew Modine is an anal retentive-like mob tracking cop who falls for her. The plot is mostly predictable and cutesy and Mercedes Ruel steals the show as the Queen of Mob Wives. If you aren't looking for something too dynamic and complex, this movie is absolutely entertaining and an 80's cult classic. You won't be able to stop watching if you start.
Storyville (1992)
A Spader Favorite
This is a fantastically unique story about a young public defender running for congress who is set up in a uniquely twisted situation and how he plays the situation. I don't want to give too much away, because it is rare that we have unique plots in recent times. There are plenty of cheesy moments, even by Spader. I really enjoyed his character and I think someone else mentioned the vulnerability of Spader's Cray Fowler. Even though this guy isn't the most up and up guy in the bunch (hey he's going to be a politician!), he is a very likable character with good intentions. I encourage checking this movie out, you won't be disappointed - I'm surprised this thriller didn't catch on in the early 90's when it was released.
Here on Earth (2000)
Could have been good
Except the script was HIDEOUS. I felt sorry for the actors trying to make something out of this not so interesting, yet sweet story. The lines were so obscenely cliché I couldn't take it. Sobieski and Klein in particular looked uncomfortable delivering their lines. Hartnett had a better part and is a wonderful actor - he was the only character with any substance, probably because he got totally screwed. Could have done without Klein's mommy issues in the film, which excused him from being a total jackass. Otherwise, it's a nice story about being young and in love and feeling torn.
I recommend this film if you want to watch something sweet without complexities.
